The life and death of Atlantic Rock Art
The lecture:
Atlantic Rock Art, known for its cup-marks, rings and other circular iconography was being extensively carved on open-air outcrops and boulders across many landscapes of Western Europe during the 4th and 3rd millennia BCE. While much has been said and written about these enigmatic marks, many questions remain unanswered. This lecture will reflect on the importance of this tradition for past societies, and discuss its creation, use and change, towards the mid 3rd millennium BCE.
About the lecturer:
Dr Joana Valdez-Tullett FSAScot is a prehistorian and rock art specialist. She has been working with rock art of various periods since 2003, from the Palaeolithic to the Iron Age, in a number of European countries. Joana completed her PhD in 2017 at the University of Southampton, with the thesis ‘Design and Connectivity: the case of Atlantic Rock Art’, exploring carvings and Neolithic connectivity in Atlantic Europe. Her research interests include computer applications to archaeology, connectivity and the intersection between archaeology and contemporary art.

This is a very important subject. It should be research by linguists. It would be wonderful If Steven Pinker and Robert Sapolsky would/could share their opinion about those enigmatic signs/symbols , made by first farmers in Europe. Personally, I suspect those motifs have spiritual value for people who made them probably were engaging in ritualistic behavior. Usually it is are shamans, who create artwork since the beginning of times. There is no reason for a lame person to create symbols of faith, or symbols of any abstract ideas . I believe more research should be done by specialists in psychology and linguistics. #Bogoslowsky , a.k.a. immortal #king in Gilgamesh
This is part of what Marija Gimbutas studied and published about. I expected some mention of her work, though I know Renfrew, among other male archeologists/anthropologists demeaned her work, for their own reasons.

Is there reference material for this perinatal post-natal activity KJB? Allied w/the notion that: "With Rupestrian art- people were so much more connected to nature, especially women." - Tina Lindhard, academic mentor, IUPS -- I'm exploring a notion called Feminina Fundamenta and the influence of the umbilicus/placenta.

Sorry none that I know off, the concept comes from stories told to me on the big island of Hawaii where they carve circles for the same reason
