The Lies and Corruption Behind Fukushima

Ойын-сауық

Heart goes out to the victims of Fukushima. I hope TEPCO goes bankrupt and every exec who worked there rots in jail.

Thank you for a well informed, well balanced, and articulate discussion of this incident. I had 26 years of experience in the nuclear industry.

Great video! So sad to see an industry that could be so integral in power generation being destroyed by such willful greed.

I normally try to make more insightful comments than this, but the soundtrack in this video is exceptionally good. Especially whatever song is playing under the chronology of the meltdown.

Well I do know that Japan is beginning to restart a lot of their nuclear plants due to the supply chain issues and rising costs associated with the pandemic. If TEPCO intends to continue running nuclear plants hopefully they'll do it in a proper manner, and hopefully Japan's nuclear regulatory agencies aren't captured by industry and actually do their job.

100%, the current global capitalistic model we operate under myopically prioritizes short term gains with zero concern for even medium term consequences. Zero punishment for the sociopaths who lead companies to make these disastrous decisions; they get golden parachutes instead of jail time. Maddening indeed, but I think more and more people are getting turned on to these issues and understand the gravity of them, which offers some measure of hope.

About a year after the disaster, noting that Fukushima was still associated in many people's minds with the disaster, they created a new municipal mascot to promote a new vision of the city. They named it a portmanteau of the name of the city with the English word "puppy," but you can tell no native English speakers were consulted in the creation of... Fukuppy.

Looked this up, it was apparently the mascot for Fukushima Industries, a freezer company based in Osaka. Apparently the actual portmanteau is of "Fuku," the japanese word for fortune, and the english word happy. Came from a good place, but the result was deserving of the derision it received.

Public/private collusion and corruption is a well documented phenomenon in Japan. The consequences of this have been largely negative, to say the least.
