This is my fave kind of video of yours. A bit of editing/before-after, a bit of on-location, a bit of philosophical ramblings (and possibly half-cooked theories lol), a bit of cursing, and a TON of excitement and love for what you're doing. I may or may not ever get into the Leica system but after seeing this I absolutely cannot wait to be 15 years deep in this game, only another decade to go. Keep up the great work, Cam!

Well, yeah, of course it is. As someone who has had an M6, Q2, Q2M and M11: film gives the "look" on the film cameras and Lightroom (or similar) gives the look on the digital Leicas. The cameras are great but it's not because of any "look".

As a keen amateur I rented a selection of Leica lenses M11, Q3 and SL kit before I committed to buying into it. I soon realised the limitations on my photography are not kit but my ability. So now going to focus on my own skills and courses (then just need to get the gorgeous models and awesome locations, kit comes last !).

Awesome Video as always. I was not able to get Leica camera but I did manage to get a Voigtlander Bessa R2, which is M mount as well. I got Voigtlander 35 mm F1 .2 to go along with it and I love that combo as well as adapting the mount to my Komodo. One thing I found about Leica is that you get some limitations with the framing patches but with the Bessa I get 35, 50, 90 mm patches. Can’t wait to see your next videos.

I have seen a lot of people comment on the infinity lock on these type of lenses and while it does tend to be annoying sometimes i find that when the lens is locked at infinity you can unscrew it much easier to replace the lens. I know that for some people this makes zero difference but in my opinion its a great feature if it was intended.

I’m no Leica expert but perhaps some of the purists will pipe in and provide insight how to get the “Leica look” you HAVE to be using both Leica sensor AND glass … so they say. I don’t see it but I totally admit it could be lack of long term Leica experience for me. That said …… I highly recommend the Thypoch 28 1.4 ……. Its solid. And I have a hard time seeing a significant different between the Q2 Summilux and the Thypoch on my M10R. Ps: for the record, my full frame M10R is more compact than my Xpro2 with similar sized lens (though M10 is heavier).

I really would love to see some more companies licensing the M-Mount from Leica (like Pixii) and create cheaper digital rangefinder alternatives to the Leica M cameras. They are just SO EXPENSIVE and I feel like a little more competition in this market couldn't hurt (esp because Leica would earn licensing fees anyways).

I recently got the Tech-Art TMZ-02 adapter, which allows you to autofocus (and close-focus) your M lenses on Nikon Z bodies. I tried it with my Z6 and my buddies Zf.. especially on the Zf it really works well. Sure, focus isn't as snappy as with native Z lenses, but it's a crazy experience to see autofocus work on a lens that is potentially decades old and was never designed for autofocus in the first place. I think you'll like it (or, possibly not at all, if you really are all in on manual focus :) )

I don't recommend Techart adapters because their firmware and repair support is non-existent which means upgrading your camera's firmware will render the adapter useless which is the last thing you want as Nikon is constantly releasing firmware and I've seen enough reports of adapters randomly breaking on its own with no response from Techart.

I had plenty of soft, somewhat out of focus images in my childhood with a plastic smena8m. Lots of character there :) I imagine OOF look only works if you front-focus. If focus is on middle or back of hair, it looks like a mistake. Another thing about OOF look is intend. There is nothing to love if you planned and tried to get a sharp image, but got a happy accident OFF. Leica by design is more like a happy accident. For me "Leica look" is in a slightly out of focus image of people bored and running out of patience waiting for you to get a critical focus :)

I would say look to Voightlander's Nokton 35 Classic 1.4 and the Heliar Classic 50 1.5 also their Nokton 35 1.2 and 50 1.2. Last Ultron 35 f2- very sharp, very small with just enough sas at f2 - get that in brass/black paint and put it on the M11 black paint when it comes out, then take 80 grit to the edges and pimp up the brass on that 11. All the collectors will be like REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE Ha!

Great cameras - but - the basically ALL are now! It's NOT the sensors - it's the lenses/lighting/and post work that create the look/vibe. If spending 2-3X more than other cameras makes the Leica buyers feel empowered then go for it- but that is a 'placebo effect' IMHO and not a reflection of the underlying imaging tech.

You’re right and wrong. I agree it’s all about lenses and the photography itself.. but cropped sensors can hold you back in many ways when it comes to do finalizing your look. First, there’s almost zero apsc lenses that have character. Majority of lenses that have character are full frame. Obviously if you put a full frame lens on a cropped sensor, you’re cropping into the optics and losing a lot of that character. Second, if you’re someone that purses a lot of bokeh and separating.. or order to get the separation at the equivalent focal length, you have to find even faster glass to get the same look. As some point, you can only go so fast. Third, i have countless of proof, that if you’re someone who pushes your files in post.. cropped sensors start to fall apart a lot faster than full frame files do.

@@cammackey No question that physics does come into play with optics and noise with regard to sensor size.... But - there are actually many more lenses (and history) on the APS-C/Super 35 side when it comes to Cinema. This year's House of the Dragon (just about as high-end/high budget as you can get!) switched cameras for this season - from an Alexa LF to the new Alexa 35 - they decided that the wider dynamic range of the new sensor created a better image than the larger LF sensor.

Leica look is only and only from their old lenses. None of their new ones have any character whatsoever, because they are optically almost faultless, and so are all the ASPH and Apo lenses from other manufacturers. To my eyes they all have the same modern look, ultra sharp and contrasty. If you want that old Leica look, try the old Leitz Elmar, Summitar or Summaron lenses.

@@cammackey thanks for the detailed reply you are right that a lot of the character comes from the edges of the glass. You asked if I shot with different cameras. Yes, I have. I'm a Nikon shooter and I've had most of them. except the Z8 and 9 and the single digit D series. I was saying if you look at the Leica M8 photos it still has a ton of Leica character even though it's a cropped sensor. I think that the Leica look comes down to the focal length and a fast lens especially in street photography and sometimes the way the focal length effects people up close think Bruce Gilden etc. I'm trying to chase the look with a Zf and a Thypoch 28mm currently with mixed results. I really am more impressed in your last video I watched how you shot several cameras and could nail your style with all of them. I think that is what is ultimately important.

  • @cammackey

    @cammackey

    7 күн бұрын

Well, the Leica M8 only has a 1.3X crop. Which is still bigger than standard APSC. So I think what your eye is seeing is all the glass and not the sensor or camera. In reality.. the camera and sensor has nothing to do with anything. It’s the same with film.. Like you can put a roll of portra into any camera.. with any brand.. but if you use the same lens, you’ll get the same look. So you could put the same lens on the M8 and the Nikon ZF.. you’ll Prbly get even mroe of that “Leica look” on the Zf cause the sensor is bigger and using more of the glass. My whole point to this video is about how the M mount specifically, lends to more unique lens designs that lean to the side of character rather than sensor coverage. If you look at any of the new camera mounts, they’re ginormous. They made them extra big so they can utilize more glass for more perfect quality. The smaller you go, with the same 35mm sensor size.. the more of that lens barrel you have to utilize to get that light to cover edge to edge. Hope that makes sense.

If you look at the work of Thorston Overgaard who is a Leica master, you will see that many of his photos look almost out of focus. Even the point of focus does not look as sharp as what one could achieve with other cameras and lenses. To me the Leica look is probably 100% due to the lens design. That is one reason I wouldn’t pay $1,600.00 for a Leica (Panasonic) D Lux 8 made in China. I don’t think it will give that Leica look.
