Repulsor is actually poggers once you get the hang of it Hatchet is also the highest damaging projectile to compensate for its difficulty of usage Also the best way to use mines is to lay them right underneath power ups or above boost panels, works like a charm that way

Same, i remember playing it and really feeling immersed. The steering being a bit hard, was to me the fun part because me and my brother had the same difficulties. The first race he won , the second one i did. Because in the end both of us crashed here and there. Fun game

The fact that this video has only 400 or so views is absolutely criminal. You rock as a content creator!

I never remember DRM in this game. In fact, you only needed the disc for the initial install and after that you never needed the disc again, and you could install it on as many computers as you wanted from the one disc

Yea so to my uderstanding that's the lucky "non-drm" version I mentioned. I had that one too back in the day as a kid but the one is hosted online since it's abandonware is the drm one. Aslo to me it didn't really matter because ultimately the directx error was the thing that made me unable to play.

@@bordibalint I did some reading and it seems the DRM was exclusive to the initial release. As I understand it, the later versions had a language selection screen upon starting the game which the DRM version did not. So far I've only been able to confirm via testing that the English/Danish/Russian one and the English/Spanish one are non-DRM. Since watching this video I downloaded the Eng/Dan/Rus version and was able to play it without any directX or other compatibility issues, on a 64bit Win10 laptop. Also a note on the handling models, at least on PC, I get the impression it was more optimised for use with a steering wheel setup than keyboard. I think that's why when using a keyboard, especially on the later races, it feels so ridiculously twitchy. With a wheel the handling feels way better than you'd expect from such a game 🙂

I can confirm, I have the disc version, it runs without any issues on Windows 10. Granted I did not find a way to add widescreen support but the visual quality in terms of effects is a lot better than the console versions. As for the game itself, it is good but only when playing with specific vehicles. For most of them the keyboard controls just don't work very well. Also the music for some of the later tracks is really catchy. I can see why you and the press came to your conclusions, as in order to see the good that the game has to offer, you have to find one of the five or six vehicles that can actually be controlled properly. Regarding games that use Securom. The copy protection works on Windows 10 but you have to start your system in a different mode, that allows the usage of unsigned drivers. This won't help you however if you don't have the actual disc because this workaround only fixes the copy protection.

Yea me neither and I assume that's most people. You can get external disk drives for like 50 bucks but in a pinch I usually just use an old laptop and copy the files over to a thumbdrive.

Drag races are a balancing game between acceleration and engine overheating Just let go of the acceleration button when the heat meter goes too high and then periodically tap the button when the heat meter goes down just enough to maintain your current speed

I believe you, both of your comments, all I'm saying is if the game does such a poor job at teaching / letting me utilize these mechanics and understanding their value, especially when I was actively trying, to the point where I won more while ignoring them, especially compared to any other kart / combat racer I ever played (Mario Kart, Lego Racers, Blur, etc), then it's not the best design.

I remember having had an issue on some maps where there was a big black square blocking up to all the visibility on some portions of the tracks, so you had to basically drive blind

I never forgot it! Was one of my favourite childhood games, I still play it all the time, the thing has stuck with me since I first played it and will till I die most likely haha, for the reviews and such, the game ain’t easy but it’s because it ain’t easy that it’s fun, it’s a hell of a challenge to win, maybe I’m just a masochist but I find the whole challenge of it all insanely fun

Your criticisms are incredibly valid, and are especially egregious considering the pedigree the game developers have. As you said, they made Rollcage, and that game is a _huge_ classic that I have yet to actually play, though I _have_ played (and loved) GRIP. What I like about Drome Racers is its particular futuristic aesthetic, the design of the offroad cars, and the sense of speed this game can convey. I thought the power ups fit the aesthetic well enough, but I get what you mean about the Repulsor. There is also a normal shield power up in the GameCube version of Drome Racers as well, *and* a 4-player battle mode, so I thought it was a bit odd you said the PS2 version was more/the most feature complete. I would have said the GameCube version was the definitive version of the game until I was reminded of the FOV/camera position and the frame rate (and also the weird sound menu selection effects).

I have the game and it runs fine for me on windows 10 at 1080p and about 5 000 fps. There are also free copies online that run just fine. The hatchet is actaully really good. If you look backwards you can fire it backwards and it does deal a lot of damage, im unsure why you said the opposite. The emp drone is one of the best items because there is a bug with it that causes your speed cap to be set to unlimited if you've been hit. Ive reached 500 km/h+ because of it. The game suffers from the fact that 90% of the cars suck simply because they have 0 control. That's why the game revolves around a handful of cars wich you didn't really try in the video (i think). For street the best car is Torq Racer and is very fun and easy to drive in.

Hey! The version I have is from archive.org and trust me I did try everything and read everything I could before I gave in. I don't know if it's a graphics card thing at this point because the error says dx8.1 incompatible card but it refused to run at all on my 3070 and windows 11 or windows xp vm. I think people who are lucky with the copy and their setups don't understand what's wrong and people like me just rip their hair out when nothing works after many hours. Pickups i hated while playing both compared to other kart racer-esque games like blur, lego racers, mario kart, wipeout etc and both in my personal taste in game design meaning if a mechanic doesn't make me want to use it in the 7 hours I played or it needs to be an exploit it's not a great one imo. Hatchet did not work this way for me. Maybe it's the emulator messing it up maybe a difference between versions but if it was a useful backward firing tool I would have used it and mentioned it accordingly. I remember using the torque racer and an other car toward the end just so i can finish the campaign and the challenges, especially the later mcr-s where they have a headstart if you're not first. the reason you didn't see it in the video is because I used footage to showcase/illustrate how the handling is bad, same reason I referenced the old reviews saying it too Still I didn't hate the game it's just too frustrating and limited especially when you have so many other options. I usually try to be objective when it comes to older games but locking better handling behind a skill tree and having cars spin around so easily is inexcusable. Anyone who likes it and enjoys playing I'm happy for tho.

I still find it sad that Lego canned so many Lego game projects and essentially stopped making anything but those Travelers Tales Lego games (which all feel the same to be honest). And the newest Lego racing game just doesnt feel right. Lego Racers games usually incorperated the themes of the time, like Racers 1 having pirates, Racers 2 Mars and Xalax, etc. And Drome Racers being... well, about Drome Racers.

There is a project called 'Flashpoint'. It's an archive of most flash games and it has a launcher you download, and it downloads whatever you need as you click on them but it runs fully locally on windows not browser or cloud based. Works like a charm has most old lego games.

One of the top down drome racers games from lego dot com / racers. I found it on flashpoint by searching for lego and scrolling a lot. If you google flashpoint emulator or something along those lines you'll find the app it's a backup of old flash games but it's an app you have to download and install not a browser based thing.
