The Legendary IWC C.89

I'm maintaining the legendary IWC calibre C.89. This movement was in production from 1946 to 1979.
In 1944 IWC launched its first worldwide war watch for the British Army. The watches were made as wristwatch and they were waterproof.
Collectors know them as the Mark X. Characteristic were the central hour and minutes hands and the subsidiary second at 6 o'clock. An arrow was placed under 12 o'clock to indicate property of the British Government.
The first IWC Mark XI was launched in 1948 as pilots watches which were ordered by the British Ministry of Defence.
A dear friend of mine sent me this lovely watch for maintenance.

Great job! As usual! One question, why you don't wash/clean the glass before applying liquid poly? Is that all possible dirt remain in micro scratches and get simply covered?

May I know why the watch was opened from the front and not the rear? Does this watch have a sealed case back?

Monocoque watch case. The only way to open the case is as I do it.
i have an IWC cal 89 exactly like the one you were servicing, i was winding it yesterday and suddenly something wrong happened, the crown started to turn with no resistance and the watch just stopped running . what happened in your opinion ?

I guess mainspring is broken… I’m just assuming. A watchmaker have to have a look inside the watch to identify what is wrong. Thank you for watching

Touching the face of the dial could cause damage. I am always afraid to touch the face of the dial in any manner whatsoever. Are you not afraid of damaging it? Causing harm? Please explain.

In over 3 decades of watchmaking I never damaged any dial while taken it out. I damaged one or two dials while cleaning them 🫣

As much as I like your marvelous video and your excellent workmanship (👍👌👏) on this beautiful watch, this - sadly - should come with a WARNING: DO NOT EXPECT MODERN-DAY IWCs TO HAVE SUCH ELABORATE FINISHING! While the prices IWC is asking for watches nowadays may suggest that there is a degree of sophistication in the movements, THERE IS NO SUCH THING. What you buy today are 🤪🤮💩👎 movements in all of their models priced up to $20'000. The same goes for Panerai, Tag-Heuer, Breitling and Hublot.

Panerai has also some in house movements or at least movements made by other manufacturers (e.g. JL) for Panerai.
