24:50 - I really liked the fact that you were expected to talk to everyone. It actually made seeing new people exciting. One problem with BOTW was the there were so many people that I couldn't be bothered to talk to any of them after a while as 90% said nothing useful.

I love this video analyzing my FAVORITE Zelda game, but I'd like to tell you how the game clues you in to the flute upgrade. Apon the flute boy's death, he tells you to play his flute for his father in the bar. After playing it, he tells you to play the flute near the statue.

The game originally came with a lot of help material packaged with the game. It had a huge poster of the light world map with the three light world dungeons all mapped out for the player. The manual was huge and listed all the items and was a source of hints. Plus it had a hint booklet that told you how to get through some of the toughest spots that most players would get stuck.

The physical light world map is still one of my most fun experiences with a video game, it was perfect because you could mark stuff down yourself like where you found certain heart pieces, where you found other interesting things to check out later, where warp tiles were found, etc. It also worked as an immersive tool actually where it made me feel like it was really my adventure because I would check an actual physical map.

For the most part I completely agree with everything you said about this game, on both the critique and the praise side of the things. Here are my limited gripes with your commentary on the game. I'll give you that the story does kind of stop after the first third of the game, but there are snippets here and there as one progresses even up to the end. It's not a lot but the maidens add a little bit to the story, and the blacksmiths, the lumberjacks, the flute boy and the other side characters have their own stories that give the game a level of depth I never expected from a Zelda game, especially in 1992. Yes, looking back on it, there certainly seems to be a major shift from the relatively story-heavy beginning to the story-scarce middle and end of the game. It definitely slows down once the player gets to the Dark World, however, this never occurred to me until I played through it in the late 2000s and the story-laden Zelda games of recent had become the norm in the series. Just look at Zelda 1 and Zelda 2, there is almost no story in those compared to LTTP, so I think they did a pretty solid job of slowly revealing bits of story as the game progresses. My other gripe is your characterization of the Overworld as "careless." I don't think it was careless at all, you yourself admit that most of the game has a high degree of polish. Do you really think they just willy nilly laid out the two respective Overworlds and called it day? The reason why they put the tablet that gives the only medallion the player doesn't need in the obvious spot is the same reason why they place stones in various points as barriers or why the player has to figure out they can cut through curtains and ivy. I think they also expected the player to go exploring, and, yes, that means the player essentially has to memorize both the Light and Dark Worlds. It's not like we are talking BOTW here; I was able to explore, memorize, and beat this game at 9 years old. Yes, it took me forever (several months, if I remember correctly), but again, back then, that was ok. In fact it was desired. I wanted to explore; I was exhilarated when I finally figured out how to get into the 6th dungeon! And then the same style emblem is found at the 7th dungeon, but the task to achieve the emblem is different, but not too cryptic. All the player has to do is read the signs, it isn't that difficult, but maybe by today's standards is undesirable and not easy enough to figure out. All in all, though, great job as usual; you're critique really seems to have a mix of current and nostalgic perspectives and I really appreciate that it isn't too heavy to either side. Keep up the good work young sir!

I agree with you about the layout of the overworld. I honestly think pretty much everything about it was very much deliberate and honestly kind of similar to how BotW laid out the structure of the adventure. You start by having to complete a functional tutorial, meaning you are essentially locked into a starting portion of the game but you are taught through actually playing the game instead of being forced to do meaningless tasks. After the first area though, you are given a marker on the map and told that's where you progress the story. However most of the game is unlocked for you at this point. You are free to explore and in some respect even encouraged to do so. You can follow the way the game tells you to go up until right after the first dungeon. After that you need to either talk to people or explore in order to find the book of Mudora. This is the game telling you that there's stuff to find and that you are expected to explore. Over the course of the game you'll hear NPC's talk about different parts of the map and eluding to there being useful stuff there, most notably the cave with the Ice rod. The game consistently encourages and rewards exploration, for example no one ever directly tells you how to get up on Death Mountain, when you enter the first cave it's a dark maze and all you have is you lantern. There are plenty of sections that show you that there's more to be found up on the mountain after you have gotten the medallion. Heck by the time you are at the Tower of Hera it's easy to just see what's on the bridge to the left there and if you have played the game you should be familiar with the squiggly lines so you know to use the book of Mudora. At that point you are told that you need to return with the master sword and you will get some cool magic called Ether. Similarly the placement of the Quake medallion is in the same area in the dark world as where you got the flippers in the light world and where you find the waterfall of wishing. By that point you already know that in many ways the two worlds are rather similar, important places in the light world also tend to be important places in the dark world, not always but it's definitely a trend. While you are at the stone circle the sign itself even goads you to throw something in there. This game, instead of telling you things outright via tutorials or annoying automated help prompts, tells you what to do via it's very intentional world and level design. There are tons of visual cues and suggestive clues to be found all throughout the game subtly telling you what to do and where to go.

No, the buttons aren't that much fun. But back in the 90s it felt like you were being clever and infiltrating a secret dungeon that's supposed to be off-limits to outsiders. That was satisfying.

I have a snes with this game. Even though I played it millions of times, I never used the map, probably because I forgot that you could use X to see it... but I obviously used the overworld map on my first play through, just I never used the dungeon maps Edit: also I actually learned some stuff from this vid because when I first played this game I was like 4 so I couldn’t read, and I just used my memory to play the game Edit2: 11:30 you don’t need to dash to jump off those... Edit3: 12:45 you can just pull it from behind. lol I like pointing out this stuff for some reason Edit4: 15:52 you forgot the one behind the milk shop or whatever

I love the cryptic nature of the overworld (and the game in general). When I was first playing I had no idea where to go, but I think that added a lot. This made it worth my time to explore this fairly large world. In my book this will probably always be the greatest game of all time. While it gets compared often to Ocarina, I wasn't really a fan of the 3d nature and graphics of the game. Also, if you haven't looked into the speed run/GDQ community for this game, I recommend you do. The game has unbelievably *perfect bugs* (which you will only find an odd phrase until you watch a speed run).

Everyone got stuck at some point playing this game. I played this game when I was 8 or 9 years old in the 90’s. I did not know a word of English so I literally spent A LOT of time trying to figure things out. Spending all that time, really made me appreciate and love this game so much. Many years later, once I learned English, I remember playing this game again but this time I UNDERSTOOD the reasons why things were happening. Can you imagine that? Loving a game when you are a kid simply because of the game mechanics, music and fun factors?! I remember feeling like I was playing this game for the first time again when I actually understood the story. This is the reason why I consider this one the best Zelda game ever. It is so nostalgic.

Near the end when you were going under the long bridge there is a cheat you can do with emulation. If the emulator allows turning off different layers separately you can turn off the upper layer with the bridge and see the hidden blocks below. Then you can easily see where the obstacles are. Have you ever tried the randomizer mod? It changes the position of where items are in chests. You may not get the lamp right away.

I'm kinda glad I experienced this Zelda first before any other title, as this is a vast improvement in both gameplay and storyline from the previous 2 entries. It's quite a bit more challenging later on in the game than Ocarina of Time, but I'd highly recommend playing this game FIRST before going to another Zelda title, since it establishes lore that all further Zelda games play on.

Great video. And about this game. Few things I do not like about it - never ending fetch quest. First - 3 talismans, after - 7 maidens. They could make something more interesting. For example in Landstalker you always in search of treasure and in my opinion it is much more engaging. Also, Zelda: Four Swords Adventures - superior game in my opinion. Even if a little different. :)

Only after I could read could I actually finish the game but I still love the aspect of just trying different items in different areas in Zelda games. That’s why botw kinda disappointed me but it was still an amazing game. But a link to the past will always be my favorite

Talking to NPCs, on the first run I kinda talked to everyone and would often return to town after a dungeon. Now that I know the game pretty well, i almost never go to town except of course when I have to for an item. So many of these tips and dialogues are there, but the player kinda has to search out them out. This carries back from Zelda 2 actually a bit, how the towns folk actually tell you almost everything you need to know, even if vague or badly translated at times. Maybe a better way about this would have incentivize the player to return to town more often to restock on things or something, of course not having ammo drop in the wild could have made things alot more tedious so idk.

And they did a remake on the inferior GBA.

Apparently for the longest time with sprites Nintendo claimed that coloring was limited and or difficult to depict certain colors. Most notably blonde hair. Which is why alot of the older NES heroes and heroines had brown hair but suddenly had blonde in later games. For some reason Nintendo while animating Link in artwork of strategy guides and game box art with dirty blonde hair his sprite instead featured pink for whatever reason. Which I found an odd excuse considering the Super NES featured games with prominent blonde characters such as Ken in Street Fighter.

The leaps in programming and game design were huge from the time Zelda 1 was created just to the time Zelda 3 was created. The memory for games also greatly increased, and the programmers filled memory as much as they could within time restraints. It’s not that Zelda 1 could have better combat mechanics, it just wasn’t possible nor imagined then. Please realize the times these were made were very different than now.

I love this game & this was a great review of it. I played Ocarina & Wind Waker before this so i thought going from those to a 2D Snes game wouldn't be impressive but damn i was wrong, this sucked me right in. Didn't work for Zelda 1 & 2 tho, could never get into those. Played this on an emulator on Xbox as didnt have a Snes at the time.

Back in my childhood I remember wanting this game on the gba and my Mom got it for me. I gotten pretty far in it too but I must have gotten tired of the game back then since I no longer have the gba version which is a shame but in it's place I have the Snes version which was included in with a vintage Snes game storage case and 28 other Snes games that I gotten from one my cousins several years ago (What I did with the 29 games is another story). Yeah, Super Mario kart and the Donkey Kong Country trilogy (plus a lot of other games) were what I mainly grew up with. Since A Link to the past was released back 1991 and I was born in 1994 I guess I was born when the Snes was still popular but it was almost on its way out so the N64 could take its place therefore aside from SMK and DKC I missed out on some of the Snes's best earlier games.

You are the first person I've ever seen say "the overworld in ALttP is not good." Now THAT is an honestly baffling take, especially when you follow it up with "there's not enough direction." There's a ton of direction in ALttP. It's just OPTIONAL, unlike future installments in the series where the games would force you to sit through help you didn't necessarily need. I guess Skyward Sword would be more up your alley then. *puts on sunglasses*
