It was crowd-funded by the viewers of a dnd game on twitch. The players wanted to raise a couple hundred thousand dollars for a few episodes (this is very reasonable for animation) and since they’re all seasoned voice actors they knew how to make animated stuff. Within an hour of starting the crowdfunding they raised over a million dollars. By the end they raised over $11 million. Due to this they promised to make 10 episodes of the show. Prime video then swooped in and funded the rest so they could make a neat twelve episode season. Then greenlit them for another few seasons as well as another show based off of another campaign called the Mighty Nein. It’s very exciting.

I guarantee you've heard almost all of the main cast before. You already know Matt Mercer. Laura Bailey voiced lust in both Full Metal Alchemist series. Travis Willingham voiced Roy Mustang from those series as well. Liam O'Brien is the english voice of Gaara from Naruto. Ashley Johnson voiced Elly from The Last of Us. Sam Riegel, Talesin Jaffe, and Marisha Ray aren't well known outside of Critical Role, but they've done plenty of non-VO work in the industry. This series is based on an actual play livestream of a D&D campaign run by Matt Mercer, and played by the actors who are voicing their characters in the show. Long post over. Enjoy the ride!

I first heard Sam as the voice of ghouls in Fallout: New Vegas. Laura also has a couple characters, and Liam "I Am Everyone!" O'Brien voices at least 50 characters in that game.

This animation was done by Titmouse (Venture Bros. And Metalocalypse) in Los Angeles as the primary studio with production animation by Production Reve in S. Korea. The character design is by the legendary Phil Bourassa (who spent the last decade plus exclusively working on the DC Superhero animated films and tv shows,) and informed by years of Critical Role fan art which existed well before this show was made. The main composer for the non-Scanlan parts of the soundtrack is Neil Acree (StarCraft II, World of Warcraft, Diablo III, Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis) and the Scanlan songs were all written by the voice Actor who plays Scanlan and his brother-in-law. The story behind this show is INCREDIBLE. It is the most unlikely Hollywood success story I have heard in decades.

Titmouse was a great fit for Vox Machina! Animation style fits the action so well. And the music, especially for latter episodes and season 2 is appropriately fantastic. Keylith's and Vaxildan's power-up music is epic as 76 death gorgons!

The name of the group, Vox Machina {English Voice Machine} is a reference to the fact that all the players n the D&D sessions this is based off are voice actors.

As a big fan of the original d&d stream that this is based on, I did not love the first episode, but the series gets much better as it goes. The first episode is just trying to introduce all the characters and alter their backstory to adjust for the new medium. But Matthew Mercer is the dungeon master of the main cast and these were all their characters in a campaign that started as a home game and got picked up by geek and sundry as a d&d livestream that got massively popular. All of the players are established voice actors that have been in a lot of stuff. Matthew Mercer has a bunch of smaller roles because that was how it was in the original campaign since he is the dungeon master.

Your intro at the start says it's an episode of Dragon Prince? Almost clicked away because I thought the title was wrong. You're absolutely right, Naru! This entire series is based off a D&D campaign done by the group, Critical Role; a group of "nerdy ass voice actors playing Dungeons & Dragons together." It was made possible thanks entirely to Kickstarter donations made long ago. Matt Mercer and the others expected it to reach the exact amount of $750,000...but much to everyone's surprise, the final amount was a million (and it was only the first hour.) By the end of the first day, the total reached up to 3.0 million

This feels D&D because it is. It's the legendary story of the first campaign of the actual play D&D game called Critical Role - one of the first crew of talented entertainers letting an audience peer over their collective shoulders while they play their game. Think taking over 300 hours of recorded play. Distill it down in a writer's room that includes writers, original players, and animators. Put out a script and story board. Animate. And tell the legend. There's some cool comparisons out there that show various events in the storyline as animated compared to how it went down at the table. The series has an interesting feel to it. Likely because dice are involved. But the math rocks simply twist a cast of skilled story tellers, actors, and friends to create this partly crafted, partly improvised story that... well... just works.

😂 Here we go! 🎉 Also this is the show that gets me to subscribe to your Patreon. 😂 Happy to see a new Vox Machina Reactor! And also one going into it as unaware of the source material as you are. Been loving your Owl House and Dragon Prince reactions. Some minor facts without spoilers: -Yep same animation studio. -The song is “Your Turn to Roll” an original song by the cast of critical role sung by Laura Bailey and Ashley Johnson. -Vox Machina, is Latin for Voice Machine since they are all voice actors. -Actually Amazon has very little to do with this shows success as the Critical Role Team actually had a Kickstarter to raise a few hundred thousand to make a twenty two minute special of their first campaign. But the “Critters” raised $11.3 million dollars and over a million in the first day with over 88 thousand people donating. Turning what was supposed to be a one episode special into a twelve episode season one. Once Amazon heard that though they immediately wanted in and matched what the fans had raised. -“Critters” is the community name for fans of Critical Role. - “The Legend of Vox Machina” is based on the first live play Dungeons & Dragons campaign of the group Critical Role. -What is Critical Role? Well “Critical Role is a bunch of nerdy ass voice actors that play Dungeons and dragons”, which is also one of their many catchphrases. -Critical Role started back in June of 2015 streaming their D&D game live on Twitch under the “Geek and Sundry” channel banner. Geek and sundry a company run by voice actress and singer Felicia Day. -The game however started before hand as a Home game not streamed for the internet. The first session was for Liam O’Brien’s Birthday. (The voice, and player of Vax’ildan) -The game is run by a Dungeon master in this case Mather Mercer who is the narrator at the beginning of this episode along with multiple voices throughout this show. -while the are playing Dungeons and Dragons their home game was actually in “Pathfinder” a similar but different table top role playing game. -This came our WAY before Hazbin. -The characters are as follows (at least the main 7.) •Vax’ildan, Male half elf twin, rogue. •Vex’ahlia, Female half elf twin, Ranger. •Keyleth, (Key-lif) Female half elf, Druid. • Percy, Male human, Gunslinger. • Grog, Male Goliath, Barbarian. •Scanlan, Male, gnome, Bard. •Pike, Female, gnome, Cleric. Also you already looked up some of the voice actors but you were right on Matthew Mercer. -Vax, Liam O’Brien -Vex Laura Bailey (Side note they chose to play twins in game cause they share the same birthday.) -Keyleth, Marisha Ray -Percy, Taliesin Jaffe. -Grog, Travis Willingham. -Scanlan, Sam Riegel. -Pike, Ashley Johnson.

Hello! So... I confess, the following comment is a copy and paste of one I wrote quite a while back, have tweaked several times, and so now I fall back on it to give a Critical Role explanation. Yes, it's a bit longer than average, but... there's A LOT of stuff to cover, I summarized as best I could. Welcome to the world of Critters. Once upon a time, many years ago a talented voice actor was about to have a birthday, and to celebrate Matt Mercer, another well-established voice actor and talented GM (Game Master) offered to run a role-playing game for a group of friends... who also all happened to be voice actors. So, a group of nerdy ass voice actors sat around and played D & D. The group had so much fun they made it a regular thing, Felicia Day of 'Geek and Sundry' heard about this game and approached them with the idea of streaming it... and it became a hit in its field, eventually growing into its own company and channel known as Critical Role. Parting on good terms with their previous home, Felicia Day has a small role in the beginning of episode 2. Vox Machina was the group of characters they played in Campaign One, there has also been a Campaign Two, in which the cast plays a whole new group of adventurers. Both are set in the same world, but on different continents, and Campaign Two is set a few decades after the end of Campaign One. Each campaign ran for over a hundred episodes which are all over three hours long, and we are over 90 episodes into Campaign Three. They have also put out a bunch of other content, from talk shows to shorter games in other Role Playing worlds. They have played live shows to sold out theaters, become the number one channel on Twitch, have merch stores in multiple countries, have comics and actually published books of fan art (there are some talented as F*** Critters) they also started a nonprofit charity to... "Leave the World a Better Place." The whole cast would all tell you that they never expected any of this, that it has been a wild ride and they are just trying to hold on and be worthy of it. A few years ago they started looking into the possibility of an animation, but no one was buying, or at least not on their terms, so they went to the Critters to try and raise upwards of $700,000.00 over the course of 45 days in order to make a two-part special for themselves and their fans.... The Critters laughed, and smashed through not just the goal amount, but also ALL of their stretch goals within an hour. By day 45 they had raised nearly 11 and a half million dollars, added a bunch more stretch goals, and the two-part special became a season. Amazon took note and basically funded a second season (3rd season was green lit just before season 2 dropped) to get the streaming rights, but the show is created by Critical Role. Those Nerdy Ass Voice actors are the producers and have full creative control. Most of the people they hired, from writers to artists and composers are also fans who love and know the story and its world. It is one of the truest examples of a project of love I have ever seen. During the production of season one of the animation they put out a series of videos to keep their fans in the loop of how things were going. Interviewing the people behind the scenes and giving non spoiler info about the production. It's a good watch and will really help you understand the devotion and love that went into this project, as well as introduce the cast. Personally, how the lead composer got the job is one of my fav stories. Here is that play list. kzread.info/head/PL1tiwbzkOjQwJdoNetaNJE1zZVOE7xi8u The latest big news is that Amazon has signed off on producing a season based on the Campaign Two group, known as The Mighty Nein! And no I did not misspell Nein. They have also reached a multi year agreement that Amazon gets the first look at any new shows OR movies Critical Role wants to produce. Many a fans ears perked up at the mention of possible movies given the popularity of a particular 4 episode and done Campaign, “Exandria Unlimited Calamity” It is a separate adventure set in the same world, but way, WAY, before Vox Machina's or The Mighty Nein's Time. Once again, welcome to this new world, hope you enjoy your visit and stay for a while... it's a devoted community with a lot of heart... and dicks... so many dicks... LoL. Let Chaos Reign!
