one of the coolest facts about twitch plays Pokemon, was that twitch woke up and thought they were under a huge ddos attack, because they had never seen such numbers before (twitch was very young back then), they ended up giving twitch plays Pokemon its own dedicated server just to handle all of bandwidth.

If I remember correctly, they tried to to do a twitch plays gold/silver or yellow immediately after and most weren't interested because they were burned out from the first twitch plays. If they had waited a few months and built up some hype for it they could have made it into a big event for each pokemon game.

while maybe true, after the first run the TPP community downsized to a tight knit group mainly over on the subreddit. it wasn't a big thing anymore, but we all still enjoyed creating lore and fan art for the 20+ runs held after Red. My favorite part about TPP is how you have the surface lore, with the Helix Religion and everything, but then you have, like, this meta narrative, where Twitch Chat is an actual entity, "the Voices", coming in and taking over the body of this poor kid embarking on his Pokemon journey. I've seen all sorts of different narratives come out of the community, and I just find that so incredible. TPP really is something special.

An interesting part of the Lance battle, and one of the reasons All Terrain Venomoth was so amazing was its poison typing. Tell me if I'm wrong but due to its typing this made Lance's Dragonite spam non damaging psychic moves like agility and barrier because the games code thought it wanted use a psychic move against a poison type, essentially letting ATV get moves off without taking any damage and was the only reason a level 30ish Venomoth could beat a level 62 Dragonite. Just thought it was an important part of the story. Great video! Loved reminiscing on this.

It is known as "good ai" where the ai will utilize type advantage. The problem is that the good ai doesn't know the difference between a damaging move and a stat boost move so it'll spam that. @TheGamerFromMars you missed a very important detail about the Lance fight. All Terrain Venomoth only won due to the games poor enemy AI. Lance has "good" AI, meaning that he will always pick a super effective move if possible. It just so happens that that Dragonite knows Barrier, a psychic type move that would be 4x super effective if not for the fact that it deals no damage. In tandem with a bug that makes enemy Pokemon ignore PP, it was impossible for Lance's Dragonite to KO ATV

I know the main things he has gotten in trouble for are racism (the whole burning cross images things), Anti-gay speech (twitch got mad at that one I think) and his rather admant position in being Pro-life/anti-abortion. Basically his main thing these days is arguing politics, and while he is honestly one of the better debaters (I mean in regards to the process, even though I don't agree with him on the majority of topics, He still listens, researches, explains his side and admits when he doesn't know/isn't familiar with a topic, which honestly is something most people don't do. but back to the main point), He tends to be very vocal and fixed in his position, which means he is gonna p*ss of a hell of a lot of people who don't have the same view point. Add that together with his "no holding back" attitude and he royally p*sses off a lot of people. I'm about 99% sure thats why he's lost his twitch partnership. TLDR : He is vocal and argues alot. He can be racist or homophobic at times. He has a habit of really p*ssing off alot of people at once.

Imagine finding a project that involves tens of thousands of emotionally invested people tirelessly working for days on end to complete it, and decides to ruin it for each and every single one of them. ... And then be surprised they weren't very happy with that. Jesus fucking christ. The lengths some narcissistic ego-centric sociopaths are willing to go for some extra attention/views/subs. Anyway, great video! I heard about the TPP and checked it out once, but I never really got into it because of the trolls. It's nice to see the whole story of it in a fair amount of time though. So thanks for making it!

What would he the point of twitch plays pokémon if it was just thousands of people trying to work together? The people who tried to tear it all down contributed to create a really awesome narrative and personally I wouldn’t have it any other way. Also he definitely didn’t deserve to have people trying to hack him for doing something as silly as releasing pokémon.

yo just wondering, if you just wanted to watch a lets play how come you didnt watch any of the thousands on youtube? the point of twitch plays pokemon was the chaos of it, it doesn't make you a "narcissistic ego-centric sociopath" for wanting to stoke some of those flames. if anything, i feel stories like this added to the lore of it all and made it so much more compelling and an interesting story worth telling. honestly, i feel like it speaks more about your sociopathy if you think it's a reasonable reaction to send death threats, doxx, threaten his kid etc for doing what he did because, personally, i absolutely would expect anyone to be surprised people care that much about... chaos in twitch plays pokemon? these comments are the most insane shit i've read in a long time, and it's extremely concerning knowing most of you people aren't kids considering it happened 6 years ago.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! Cover Season 2 of this because it was truly magnificent, the fact that you had the team from this playthrough going up against the players of Gold/Silver/Crystal felt like such a great story taking place, i really hope you cover that one in a part 2 either as next video OR at a later date since it has a lot of truly funny, entertaining and sad moments. There was also a waiting period for which some knock off versions of Pokemon were played whilst everyone waited for the next official game to start. Please there is SO MUCH LORE to cover and it would be a shame if all of it gets lost to time since some of it is at least worthy of footnote.

I remember being up and getting ready for bed. And on a whim, chose to open up the stream, and watched in amazement as we found out that dragons were considered terrain. It was a weirdly comical and magical moment. And I'm glad I got to see it. So much of this stream was in the community and how we talked and mythologized all of these random tidbits and events. It was truly a unique experience. And as for Streamer, I understand why he prefers to stay anonymous. I hope they're doing well, especially in these days.

Great doc. My one criticism is that I wish you let the big moments in the series breathe a little more. Moments like making it past the ledge of death, catching Zapdos, and finally beating Blue felt to me like times where there should've been less commentary and more of the gameplay speaking for itself. You didn't even show the Master Ball being thrown, and for the very last fight, you only showed a single move. These were such incredibly hype moments and I didn't really feel that weight here. Still, super informative doc. I learned a lot and enjoyed watching!

  • @justanotherhobbit7215

Hmm, While I kind of agree, you have to remember that he is making this video in the hopes that it will be enjoyable by all people, not just those who are familiar with the game or were part of the TPP stream. What might carry a sense of overwhelming relief or impact for people familiar with the game or the stream, is simply "oh that used a different colour ball... neat" or "wow.... They moved a square to the right instead of down.... um.... cool?". We understand the meaning behind it so it seems much more important to us, but to people not familiar having less commentary in those moments explaining why it was so important or such an accomplishment would likely leave some people a tad lost or confused to the point. Basically he has to balance : - What was big/important to the people involved. - What is clear enough to show and easy enough to explain/understand to people who aren't familiar. The result is trading off some "big moments" for a clearer, more easily understood story for all.

@@justanotherhobbit7215 The most successful documentaries engage viewers with the story as if they were involved in it at the time. They use pacing and build up to re-create the same emotion as experiencing it live. Not saying that TheGamerFromMars did a poor job, I enjoyed the video, but I think Gandeef is definitely right in that he didn't allow viewers to experience the hype that the original 2014 viewers experience.

He makes/made his living off of live streaming and during one of those live streams he tried to insert some drama into the playthrough. His surprise was for how long after people were obsessively attacking him over it and the amount of time it involves. Trying to dox or hack someone's account takes a lot more out of a person's day than Destiny telling his chat to go try to release some Pokemon.
