Aang never wanted to be the Avatar, but he was forced to grow up and take the role for the good of the world. Korra loved the idea of being the Avatar and wanted to do it so badly, but was struck down at every turn. Every one kept saying she was not needed, no one respected her and every other person wanted to kill her. That's some tragic stuff man. They literally broke her down.

great comment! they're both really tragic and it's hard to say who had it worse. i feel like by the end, aang was happy to be adventuring with his friends, and grateful for the journey. but korra's really had a hard time for so long. there's also the fact that aang had one main threat, and korra has had multiple big threats. so i guess maybe korra takes the cake on that one.

It's painful to see Korra so depressed, and trying so hard to recover and move on like everyone else. You can see how much muscle she's lost. Unlike Aang, who almost felt burdened by the title, Korra wanted to be so badly. It was her whole character. But she was constantly struck down, and now, the mercury only made things worse. Who knows how far they'd have gone with it if it wasn't a Nick show. On the bright side, it's great to see Toph again.

"Korra Alone" is such a beautiful episode. The way they depict Korra's trauma as literal manifestation of herself in that all-mighty yet powerless state is haunting. I may have never expirenced PTSD, but I know how hard it is to heal from mental sickness. How awful it is to be useless yet have no power or self-confidence to get better. Korra literally throws herself from running from her trauma to trying to fight it, from seeking help to total loneliness. I think to get better she requires a great deal of balance between her input and the help from others.

About Republic City, Republic City territory is the old "Colonized" territory, after the 100 years war, The Fire Nation was supose to give back all the coast territory that they took from the Earth Kingdom, but that triggered a social issue, you see, some of the territory was under Fire Nation for 100 years, that lead to a mixed race population and mixed families that live on that land for generations, and are not really happy to be split or banish from the land, you have people that are natives from the earth kingdom but want to live under Fire Nation. So you basically have people from the Earth Kingdom calling Zuko a traitor and a weak fire lord because he was just "allowing" the Earth Kingdom to take over the land. After a lot of "Diplomacy" Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom decide to give up the land and the "Colonized" Territory becomes Republic City. But some people on the Earth Kingdom hated the idea, they feel Zuko and Aang basically take advantage of the fact the Earth King was a weak man to steal the land. That was mentioned by the Earth Queen during seaosn 3. So the thign with Kuvira is a big mix bag. She is basically the world trying to balance Zaheer Zaheer createc chaos, after he killed the Queen, the Earth Kingdom broken up in a lot of small territories, and that also allowed some warlords to take advantage of the situation. Imagine if someone killed the US president and next week, US broken up in 50 different small nations that refuse to work together or share resources, and some even start to fight each other.

I remember one of the best comparisons I saw someone make between Korra and The Last Airbender was that Aang was a person who had to learn how to be an Avatar Whereas Korra was an Avatar that had to learn how to be a person. Being the Avatar was Korra's entire identity so not being able to do her job as the Avatar forced her to try and rediscover herself, similarly to what Amon did to her in S1. Bending and being the Avatar was her life so that being taken from her was the worst possible thing

05:11 Republic City's origins are in the comics. One of Zuko's first Fire Lord responsibilities was to remove the Fire Nation colonies from the Earth Kingdom. The colony where Republic City is located was the oldest colony and already had integrated families (Fire Nation marrying Earth Kingdom). After a conflict between the colonists and the Fire Nation, they decided to turn the colony into Republic City.

I just don't understand what they were thinking captioning this the way that they did. It's supposed to be a little mini-mystery for a moment before the surprise is revealed. They didn't have to identify Toph in the caption. If anything, they could have put "mystery character" or some BS in place of her name until the reveal.

I really like how in Korra Alone (which is a reference to Zuko Alone from ATLA) that Dark Korra is the one depicted as Korra's biggest foe here and that some of the shots from After All These Years are refocused through her lens. Many people tend to underestimate the effects mental illness has on people and I like that this episode discusses it in a way that both makes sense and is relatable. After All These Years is another neat episode showing just how much things have changed since the Red Lotus incident, with both showing how much Korra kept everyone in the dark regarding her issues. Fun facts (source: Avatar Wiki): *After All These Years is Kai's final speaking role in the series. His English VA, Skyler Brigmann, had to redo all of his lines during the episode's post-production, as his voice had changed significantly since his initial recording. *After All These Years has one of the few instances in the franchise where non-classical instrumentation is used, that being the electric guitar, which plays during the moment of Meelo's self-aggrandizing (this is also the first episode showing Meelo with hair). Composer Jeremy Zuckerman has been noted by Bryan Konietzko as "first and foremost" a metal guitarist. *The earthbenders surfing on rocks during their attack on Kuvira's train is similar to how the Southern Water Tribe rebels began their attack in Night of a Thousand Stars. *The network was originally concerned that, during Korra's flashbacks, there were no chyrons describing what point in time scenes were taking place. The production crew, however, trusted that the audience would understand how the episode was structured, while also taking care to visually differentiate the different periods in time, with one example being the cooler, desaturated color palette for Korra's flashback when she left Air Temple Island. *Originally, Aang's "Wall of Avatars" photo depicted him in a much more stoic manner, in line with how he had been depicted in previous episodes of The Legend of Korra. The production crew later changed the photo to be more light-hearted in nature, wanting to capture some of the same spirit Aang had in the original series. *Korra Alone is both Tonraq and Senna's final speaking roles in the series. *The spirits at the Tree of Time in Korra Alone are voiced by child actors, something the cast was inspired to do after getting similarly young actors to voice spirits in Beginnings Part 1. *Korra Alone is Janet Varney's favorite episode, as well as one of DiMartino's favorites to write. It was also the People's Choice Winner for "Best Television Episode" in IGN's Best of 2014 for television. When writing the episode, specifically Korra's storyline of dealing with her physical and mental trauma, DiMartino kept in mind the numerous stories he had heard from fans expressing how Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra had helped them through damaging personal events like illness, bereavement, and suicidal ideation, with DiMartino wanting to honor those fans and their experiences with the episode.

It is really cool to see a variation in skill. Throughout Avatar, and most of Korra, skill with bending was extremely linear. You were weak, strong, or somewhere in between, but it was just a one lane street. It's cool to see someone like Kuvira who is undeniably skilled at bending, but in a different way than most. Hey, you know what's my favorite overlap in all of AtLA and LoK? In the episode The Avatar and the Fire Lord towards the end of AtLA, Aang explains how Roku believed that some friendships were powerful enough to transcend lifetimes. Toph is the one most intrigued by that when he explains it to the group, asking, 'Do you really think some friendships can last more than one lifetime?' to which Aang says, 'I don't see why not.' @@SortaStupid subtitles can also be added to the youtube video itself so you get the best of both worlds, but I digress. The thing that got to me, is the fact that that moment was animated very deliberately to suspend the surprise for a couple moments by giving the view only a few small hints of her identity before she turns around and reveals her face/blindness. It's very clear that the writers did not want ppl to be instantly spoiled by the subtitles. I'm an artist/animator, and the intended experience can be so personally important to the creator. And, I'm not exaggerating when I say this, every single reactioner I've ever seen react to this scene, has gotten themselves spoiled by the subtitles. So it really got my hopes up when you guys talked ab turning them off for the episode possibly, and actually getting to experience the scene as it was intended, and just felt kinda disappointed when ya didn't.

Okay just going to break this now, kuivira had nothing to do with the bandits. Everyone always thinks that's the head canon, that she sent the bandits so that she would then clean it up, but no it's they are literally just bandits and she was the great United, as her title is called these days. No real leadership in the earth kingdom, Avatar gone, air Nation spread thin trying to fix everything, she literally is just a person stepping up to protect her home. She did not send the bandits, she's not using them, just breaking that headcanon now

SPOILERS FROM THE COMICS I think, Republic City was the first Fire Nation colony on the Earth Kingdom at the beginning of the 100 year war, but during all that time, the fire nation people living there had mixed with earth kingdom people and had mixed families, when the Earth King, Zuko and Aang reached an agreement of migrate all the Fire Nation colonies back, that colony was the only one that refused to return because doing so would only separate the fire/earth families that had been formed over 100 years and this caused riots with Earth Kingdom's extremists (led by Jet's followers) who did not want anyone from the fire nation living in their kingdom and who were racist towards the descendants of the fire/earth families, in the end Aang managed to mediate things and resolve the dispute between the Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation and avoid another war and the colony later became Republic City, where people from all nations could live together.

Also spoiler for the Imbalance trilogy comics Cranefish Town is 100% Republic City. Has the same coastline that we see in that first intro and Aang and Katara spend sometime resting and talking on an island that almost definitely is air temple island.

Believe it or not, she and the leader of the Decepticons have more in common than you’d expect (and notice even more as the season goes on). The main one being their philosophy of “Peace through Tyranny!” Granted, she pales in comparison to Zaheer and the Red Lotus from the last season, but Kuvira’s personally my second favorite villain from the Legend of Korra. The land that currently belongs to the United Republic was Earth Kingdom territory that was captured and occupied by the Fire Narion in the early days or even before the Hundred Year War. By the time the war was over it had become a melting pot of Fire Nations and Earth Kingdom cultures and couldn’t really be called a part of the Earth Kingdom anymore so it eventually became the United Republic.

A lot of people feel that Season 3 is the best part of Legend of Korra, and generally speaking, I agree. Season 4 is always going to be pretty special for me, though. Back when I first watched this series a few years ago, I was pretty much at the bottom of the worst depression spiral I've ever had. I'd just been through a series of very painful experiences and I wasn't handling it well at all. I wasn't opening up to anybody about it, I wasn't taking care of myself, my grades were dropping, I almost lost my scholarships, I was falling apart and pushing everyone around me away. So when I watched this, Korra's experience really resonated with me. It feels like you failed, and there's nothing you can do to stop it from getting worse, and you don't want to admit to anybody that you need help because you're such a screw-up that you don't deserve that help unless you can be sure you aren't going to let them down. And that just digs you deeper and deeper into the pit, unless you can finally let someone help you get back up on your feet until you can handle it yourself. It took me about a year and a half before I could even start trying to do that, and it's definitely the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I'm doing much better now, but that kind of experience leaves some scars that never fully go away.

I think that Kuvira may be based on Oda Nobunaga, who was known as one of japan's three great unifiers. As his unification tactics are Identical to kuvira's. The funny thing is. A. Oda nobunaga is actually the only of the the three great unifiers who actually deserves that title. B. Out of all three Oda Nobunaga was actually the least bad, dispite having the worst reputation. (He still did bad shit but you can see a good motive behind it.) Toyotomi Hideyoshi is often portreyed as a funny monkey man, when he was actually a power hungry conquer who took big swaths of the asian continent. Tokugawa Ieyasu is portreyed as a golden boy when he was a paranoid tyrant who is the reason japan went into seclusion for several hundred years, significantly stunting their technological growth so that when the borders were forced to be broken they couldn't fight back. Menwhile Oda Nobunaga is portreyed as "Demon King of the Sixth Heaven" when he only called himself that as a sarcastic joke/pure annoyence at the buddest warriors who were giving him the biggest headache ever.
