The legend - JBL A6000GTI Circuit Overview & Repair

The repair of this one eluded me for some time, but after finally finding the root cause of my problems I was able to get it back up and running, and talk about how this amp works for you guys. Stick around for some demos in the coming weeks provided I get the chance!

    The low power supply switching frequency is because of the circular layout. In order to fit the number of mosfets needed, the circle needs to be quite big. If you fill up that circle with one transformer of a size that nicely fills up the hole, it will be quite big. Because of its size, its magnetic resonance frequency will be lower. It will need a lower switching frequency for operating at peak efficiency. Looks awesome. Power supply section is probably supposed to symbolize a crown. Just one flaw in this amp. It really needs thru-hole gold-plated headers and pins for its boards.

    I see, so i guess it was more form over function, they wanted that visual design so lowered the frequency to match the size needed

    One of my 3000’s (same main board) had bad headers. Gates stayed open fighting the others. Fets pop, cooked the gate driver and then a couple pieces on one of the front end board.

    This is really cool for you to go through the circuit in such detail...I have just received 2 crown 4000 pa amps for service from around the same era and having a quick look under the hood it looks like the output section is similar possibly using an identical drive card arrangement with the plugin boards/headers....so I'll be definitely checking out the connectivity of this headers. If I didn't view your vin I possibly wouldn't have them under scrutiny!!! Thanks for your work and great synchronicity too...

    These come up now and again on forums or eBay for a good price.... good compared to the 6 grand MSRP when they were new. A bit of a white elephant though really. A beast of an amp for sure but overly complex and when it breaks there's not may people who can repair them, fewer who can get some of the proprietary parts that may be required to fix, and by all accounts it can be extremely labor intensive. I owned one for a while and when it broke it cost me nearly 1200$ to repair (200$ shipping each way plus the fix).

Listen I got that linear power 5002 out of storage and a powered it up and there's something wrong with it it you can hear it when you first connect the 12 volt turn on and it usually goes like ping and then like it powers on. Well it's not doing that it does that every once in awhile it turns on sometimes it doesn't turn on sometimes until you connecting disconnect and connect and disconnect and connect and disconnect the remote turn on then sometimes it Powers up what's the problem? Would it be detrimental to the amp, if one were to dial back the OL and UL and turn it all the way down. when I was adjusting those on the 3000, there seem to be a fine line where the amp would start to draw a lot more current. This was even when no signal was passing through it....

  • @madgadgetuk

    @madgadgetuk

    Жыл бұрын

    They have to be precisely set or you get crossover distortion. Crown specifies the point in two ways, one measure current, two use a scope to see the waveform. Turning them down would not be beneficial, whilst they have high idle current, that becomes irrelevant when being driven. They become very efficient, and produce a surprisingly little amount of heat.

  • @thatdrh

    @thatdrh

    Жыл бұрын

    @@madgadgetuk I see that the manual says this, "Connect probes to TP1 & TP3 on the coil board. Center the oscilloscope to measure the lower right portion of square wave. Adjust the time scale to 50ns per division. Adjust R307 for channel 1, and R407 for channel 2. Turn the potentiometer so that the transition zone on the corner of the waveform is less then 10 volts." Now is this with no signal, and no load. Or Do I need to passing a signal through?
