The Leatherman Free P4 Multitool: The Full Nick Shabazz Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today, we'll take a look at a tool that may be the best made Leatherman ever, but which unfortunately is far from the best Leatherman ever: the Free P4.

So, looking at Leatherman's website, it appears that in the time since I filmed this, they've now started including the pocketclip with the tool. Although I still have a Wave+ in my pack and that doesn't change that, it's an excellent step forward, a welcome improvement, and a great gesture. Thanks, Leatherman!

I was going to get the P2 since no clip is a deal breaker for me, but I SMKW has the P4 with clip so thats what I have. Carries great, I carried the wingman for years. The Charge TTI was too thick and dig into my side, plus the inner tools were a mega PITA to access. I have had my P4 for about 2 weeks now and am loving it.

@@cmac1100 yeah I’d rather have the lanyard thing. I ordered a leather sheath for it and it doesn’t really fit with the pocket clip. They should’ve included a little star bit Allen key thing so we could remove it if we want. Now I have to buy special bits to remove it so I can use the sheath I bought

How the hell do you end up messing up an awl!!! An awl is supposed to have a very sharp/pointy end on order to pierce material like thick leather!!! Adding a micro screwdriver to the end/tip of the awl makes the awls tip completely dull and therefor makes the awl completely useless!!! You shouldn't add one tool to another, if adding the second tool completly removes the functionality of the first tool!!!

I fall the other way... for several reasons. First off, without the bit kit/extender it has limited use and is terribly short, dedicated tools are superior. With bit-kit I prefer a separate driver (like Vic/Gerber do it, but there are plenty of small drivers available), simply because then I can use pliers AND drivers at the same time. Also, I don't like the LM bits because I cannot replace them individually but even if I would, you simply add the LM extender to your bit-driver/ratched whatever and you can use the LM bits without an LM multitool.

Everything is situational - I've recently bought a P4 and i love it, its now my everyday carry for work and there's a few big reasons why I went for this over a wave or a charge. I'm a rigger, and i climb.. having 1 handed opening is ridiculously useful, I have never had to really use a screwdriver in my day to day - once or twice over last few years. but what we do use is a knife - pry tool, cable cutters, saw among other things , not being that fussed about the bit kit (although would be nice for out of work use), for me personally one handed opening and easily accessible tools is so important and won it for me. so many times where I've been working at height and needed to cut something like a cable tie and only have 1 hand free is ridiculous and up til now i have carried a benchmade 940 however with having to use it to pry among other things its slowly getting damaged from work use - the P4 was the answer to my problems. The only thing that i do not like is that its a little more difficult to get closed one handed without pushing it against a surface (not completely impossible but you have to flick it hard to make it unclip the pliers), however that's a sacrifice for having the pliers clip into place. I do think its a great tool but again you must look at what you actually need the tool for. You don't buy a multi tool just based on looks or because everyone else likes it, its there to suit multiple situations in your day to day life, if you are like nick where you will need an assortment of screwdrivers this wont be for you, but you need one handed opening more than anything else like myself then this suits that role, if you need both then you'll have to wait for future iterations of this design (y)

I can see it coming down to tool preference. ( I don't own one, but I am interested in the P4.) If you are planning on using the crap out of the pliers, and need one handed opening the P4 might be the best option. It won't replace a tool box, but if you are constantly doing minor tasks like cutting treads, tightening bolts, I can see the usefulness of the P4. It seems like more ideal for cutting tasks/ taking things apart. However, if you want something that will replace a tool box, and don't plan on using on a regular basis, I can see the Wave + being the better option. It seems like it is better for putting things together.

The plain edge knife sits higher, above the frame so you can distinguish it from the serrated which sits flush with the frame. All the smaller tools also open with one hand....press the pad of your thumb in the notch, push towards the end of the tools and the whole set on that side pops up then with the finger tips engage the one you want, and return the ones you don't.

Always appreciate your reviews, Nick. As a woman with small hands, the Power Assist works way better. I use it all the time to pull screws/nails and twist out that stubborn bathtub drain that never wants to cooperate. Also, the smooth ninja-like one-handed operation also works when I am up a ladder - most recently trying to tie down the weather station. People may disagree, but the PA is way smoother and has better torque/grip. Leatherman tried to compete but didn't get it quite right with the P4. Just my 2 cents from a female viewer.

Better for me just to go get the Wera set. I do miss the ruler on the side and the awl is ridiculous. I don’t mind no small Phillips, as I prefer to use JIS screwdrivers even on Phillips screws. The magnets mean it is the wrong tool if you are grinding metal. The easy opening and one hand feature are worth it to me. I assume they will come out with other models soon.

I don't know about the P4, but the P2 I looked at today, had some terribly sharp hot spots on the edges when trying to use it as a knife. It Reminded me of the old school PST only I thought leatherman learned not to do this, and have made several attempts to rectify the issue, only they used exactly zero of them on the Free. To clarify though its the frame itself, its just sheet metal like on the OG PST, and its just super sharp.

I've had my eye on both of the newer P series. I might wait to see if they change/add some of the tools on it. Btw Nick, they have a seperate bit kit with attachment that allows you to use both standard and leatherman bits on the models that don't have the modular screwdriver.

The phillips driver on the P4 is flat and more akin to that of the Wingman. The bit kit attachment I think you are referring to are better suited to the more square drivers found on the Rebar, ST 300, etc. I've not tried it on the P4, but I don't think it will fit or work very well.

I have been carrying Leatherman tools for a few decades I love the Free Series I have both a P4 & P2 I actually use the P2 more it has everything I need and weighs a ounce less than the P4. Leatherman needs to come with a bit adapter maybe something that would go over the large Philip's for my needs the Free series has all I need and much better access to it.

Completely agree on the lack of bit driver, price and the magnets gathering swarf etc. Even the metal for the blade isn't as good as the TTi. Totally kills the whole tool! Until then release a Free TTi, it won't be replacing my Charge TTi

Hey Nick, I've had the P2 now for 4 months and love it. Just to clear a couple of things up, the needles pointy bits in the handle are not pointless. They actually prevent the two sides from slipping side to side when it is closed. Try moving the handles when closed. They really fixed a potentially big problem. And I have had no issues with the magnets. I use it everyday as a carpentry and flip it open often. Magnets are holding strong. Love your videos Nick and keep up the good work. Jackass.

The tools I use the most on my Leatherman Wave: the file, the bit kit, the ruler (no kidding), pry tool and pliers. They eliminated or severely minimized half those things in this “updated” tool. But they still have a wood saw! 🙄

You don’t even need to use your nails. A little downward pressure on the nail nicks will open the tools, so they are even easier to open than merely using your nails and even more one-hand friendly. Also, it should be mentioned that Leatherman will send you a pocket clip for free for this if you call them. I was able to get mine for free from them and it seemed like standard procedure when I called for them just to send one.

Nick, I notice you’re digging out the inner tools with your fingertip. Just hold tool (plier side down) and push the meat of your thumb against the corner of the tool. You will find this method requires much less effort. Also, I sell these in Australia and our stock has the pocketclip already attached in its sealed box. Ours do not have the removable lanyard hole option. Maybe the tool you got from Advanced Knife Bro was a preproduction preview model.

I was gonna buy a wave, but I figured I don't really need a saw (I carry a victorinox huntsman camping for a saw) or a file, which I just don't use. I ended up ordering a p2 for it's great action and pocketability, I'm a little more of a flashy guy. Also, I thought interchangeable bits would be nice, but I'd never end up forking over the money for the bits anyways

I’ve wondered why a multitool company somewhere hasn’t made a build your own option on their website. Have options that are compatible with each other, like you can’t have these but you can have these like options on a car builder. I’ve personally never needed a can or bottle opener.
