I love how the original powers were more nature based magic with the butterflies and affects on people like love spells more so than tacy slowing time and cgi energy balls. You felt like you could really do the original powers, light as a feather, glamours etc. The new one was like Twilight. I hated it personally

I just watched this movie recently for the first time and there was a lot to reflect on. So much of it was honest and still relevant today after all this time. As discussed in this video, many themes, such as racism, sexism, social idealization, body dysphoria, peer pressure, trauma and abuse, social stigma, the consequences of choice despite intention, and mental health among adolescents are shown in this movie. You could spend a large percentage of your time just analyzing these themes in many different perspectives and most, if not all, have experienced some of them in their lives. This and the realistic and historical implications of witchcraft makes it more profound than the average teen movie. My only negative criticism, which is really minor, is that the film still somewhat feeds into the notion that witchcraft is this mysterious phenomenon that should be avoided more often than not. People had, and still have, a stigma associated with witchcraft or Wicca from religion and societal norms that is only amplified by its depictions in pop culture. For that reason, Practical Magic still remains my favorite because it doesn’t really sugar coat or be biased towards the practice. Most witchcraft films either appeal to children or have some negative agenda.

“How many seasons of Stranger Things are we all going to be subjected to and we still haven’t seen Lucas’ parents?” Um, we *did* see Lucas’ parents. Remember when his mom was taking pictures of his Ghostbusters costume while Erica was calling him a nerd? Remember when Lucas had just had an argument with Max and he asked his dad for advice? I get your point and it is valid, but this isn’t the best example.

I actually met Rachel True in 2019 at Blerdcon and all of this is true. She also told me that Blerdcon was the only con that actually invited her because of her role while the other cons only invited the other three girls. Whenever I rewatch the movie I am annoyed how Rochelle's character was treated. She has no reason to follow behind Nancy. It doesn't make sense. The other girl was really feeling herself because her scars were gone and guys were starting to hit on her. Rochelle just made that racist's hair fall out which for some reason she felt bad about later which I wouldn't. There was nothing to show that she was getting a big head about anything. She also has the least lines and I also hate that tacky white trash line. Why was that there? Nancy is supposed to be her friend why would she say that about her? Nothing prior to that indicated that Rochelle was a bit mean. I also don't like the idea of them entirely scrapping the bulimia part just because they got a black actress. Yes a black person would definitely get racism in a school like that but her entire character doesn't have to be I'm black which it pretty much is in this film.

There's a deleted scene where Nancy reminds her that nobody else accepted her because she's black. So Rochelle feels a loyalty to her. That scene should have been in the final cut as it shows a nicer side to Nancy and explain why the girls sided with her against Sarah.

The 3 fold law is a thing within Wicca and I appreciate the creators of the movie wanted to make a fake god so they don't offend practicing witches. And so many social issues, as well. I think the biggest takeaway (for me anyway) from mean girls is evolution. They even have a scene when they’re literally acting like animals. Kady turns up mostly naive but educated and devolves into being worldly wise and emotionally and actually less intelligent than when she arrived due to focus on all things shallow and plastic. But that u can turn it around for the good jus as u can turn ur life around for the bad, and each time she changed she was a little more wiser in one way or another, by the end she’s far more intelligent all round after learning from her mistakes. But the truly lovely thing about mean girls is that regina even though an undeniable bitch always had aspects of her that were vulnerable and therefore relatable so by the end after getting her deserved karma she had her whole world view changed to a different perspective and she also grew arguably more so than kady, as she never started off sheltered like kady, her life although affluent was far more troubled than kadys as observed through her younger sisters blatant neglect which we can assume Regina was the first one to experience it and were seeing her little sister follow in the same footsteps. Seeing the new plastics is jus as we age a reflection of what we used to be and that in time and experience these new plastics also have the potential and will grow for better or worse but that as humans we all have the potential to evolve, learn and grow and that we all deserve a shot at redemption if we really want to be redeemed. That’s what I get out of it anyway, as a 36 year old adult who’s not going from nostalgic memory but from the fact I have watched it quite a few times jus in the last decade & most recently oct 2022

And the song was also used for The Craft tv show, so them using it for Charmed just makes it even more obvious 😂

Nah sorry, i don't see the point of comparing the craft with a movie like mean girls. And i think that, actually, mean girls it's a really deep movie that, of course, makes more sense when you are a teen than when you are an adult. And that simplicity it what makes that movie so great and memorable. But the craft is a totally different movie, and that's fine, you don't have to be like the craft (which is one of my fave movies btw) to be profund. Anyways, just wanted to point that out since it took me for sorprise that you compared those 2 movies at the end, since your video seems to be in an other direction when you actually talked about it, which was so good, this is actually one of the best analysis of the movie and it behind the scenes's controversion with Rachel that i had seen. So, despite not agreeing on that, great video

As i was saying...sometimes age, or youth is a metaphor or a way to frame the world. Like a school as a microcosism. Or students of magic or life who are not ready to understand even if they can access it. Like getting someone onto buying you alcohol or a behind the counter magazine Sometimes it's just acknowledging that school is one of the last places you get a mixture of people (if even then) and they want to show a diverse cast navigating themes that actually never go away no matter how old, rich, busy....enteeweigh mah tu pennays.

I think the only thing I would disagree with is the whole Mean Girls argument. There’s a lot more about Mean Girls then just “If you act like a mean girl, then you’re just a mean girl.” Obviously it’s not as dark as the Craft, but they’re not the same. You can’t compare a dark comedy film with Mean Girls when it’s nothing like Jawbreaker or the Craft. And yeah, it did play into the stereotypes that you see in teen movies, but that’s the point. Just because it didn’t do it first doesn’t mean that it can’t do something different. You can take a closer look at the Craft and Jawbreaker and say this is the deeper meaning, but at the end of the day, that’s just one interpretation. I can easily say that The Craft was just about some witches going power-mad, when it may have a much deeper meaning than that. I think it’s pretty obvious you aren’t a fan of lighter teen movies, and look, we can all debate about how which is the better teen movie. But I would much prefer to enjoy both the Craft and Mean Girls without people saying that it had no deeper messages when it absolutely did.

I didn’t like anything about the sequel. They didn’t develop any of the girls in the coven as individual characters except for the new girl (BARELY) and then gave a bunch of screen time to a boy. Weirdly sexist to undermine a story about women... and also homophobic to kill him off right after he comes out as bi. It was full of performative representation/activism where they were clumsily trying to throw in talking points about important issues without doing anything to develop them into quality material or developed characters. Also, you’ve got a bad guy who kills the boy because the girls “made him in their image” instead of his but they didn’t do enough to elaborate on that so we could understand his motivations. What does he blame the girls for? Getting a boy to be more open with his feelings? Didn’t he JUST encourage one of his sons to let out his emotional pain after losing his friend? Is he homophobic and doesn’t like that the girls made him feel safe enough to be able to come out? None of it was developed and none of it made sense. The more I think about it, the lower I rate it. Phew. It was BAD. 🙃

@@LadyJenevia It was absolutely horrible! You said everything i felt watching the sequel/reboot. The cast and director spew so much woke tokenism bs about female empowerment/feminism in interviews yet it escaped them that the most developed character with some of the most screen time was a boy? And none of the coven members were developed besides their diversity tokenism - black chick, Latina chick, trans chick and main chick. And for all their wokeness, the MC is still a straight white chick? Truly ground breaking. The director said something about how this about girls having each others back ,however, at the first show of individuality by a character, her coven, without so much as having a real discussion about what really could have happened, instantly turn on her and freeze her out. I loathe being able to spot performative activism in my entertainment. Good storytelling should be organic. The first movie touched on so issues without preaching to the audience like the viewers are dumb, ignorant and bigots. And yet for all the performance, the legacy still managed to get everything wrong, even the activism. The craft: Irony. That is what that should have been called. I would definitely watch your review of the sequel since you were so insightful with regards to the OG. But I wouldn't want you to waste your time. The legacy, like most movies of the past few years, will definitely not stand the test of time. It's a travesty that should never have been made.

@@notnow6946 Well I did post a brief review but it’s not as in-depth since it was put together as a commentary video from when I watched the film for the first time. It would’ve been more thorough if I had taken time afterwards to reflect on everything and write out a script (like I did for this video on the original Craft). I don’t think the intentions for Craft Legacy were bad but the execution completely missed the mark, especially in 2020 when we’re getting more content that digs deeper into the nuances of the experiences of disenfranchised groups.

I haven’t seen all of John Hughes’ movies, so I may not have enough information, but the little I have seen I wouldn’t say has “aged like milk”, at least certain ones. To age like milk is to say that they only appeal to the times they were brought about, which simply isn’t true. The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles may have characters that by today’s standards are outdated, or perhaps toxic, but the core messages surrounding them still rings true. John Hughes, from what I read, always sympathized with teens and the youth in general so he had to find a way to appeal to their generation, in his case the 80’s, while simultaneously trying to deliver timeless messages and wisdom that can be reflected upon in adulthood. He always had, at least on the surface, good intentions to his films and never wanted them to negatively impact the lives of the teens he adored. That isn’t to say that some of his discography contains harmful stereotypes and archetypes, which should be taken seriously, but as you put in this video, a lot of teen movies did. For me, and I see this with everything, I take the best and leave the rest and focus on the context so that I may learn from the flaws of the material without adopting them into my life. John Hughes’ teen catalog can be viewed the same way.

The remake wants to steal the lines and scenes from the original without understanding why they worked in the original. So "we are the weirdos" worked because the girls are outcast goths and witches in a catholic school. And they're not all nice people - Nancy's unfriendly to Sarah in the beginning. The original has priests, nuns, and Catholic mass in to create the sense that the girls don't fit in. In the remake they look too normal. Noone's in uniform and they're all nice to the new girl after she gets her period. They look too stylish and colorful. Not to mention the scary magic of the original becomes sparkly fairy dust. Just visually it lacks the dark, gothic, lonely feel The Craft had.
