The Last Reindeer Nomads: The Tsaatan's Struggle for Survival

Ойын-сауық

In the remote sub-Arctic boreal forest of Northern Mongolia, near the Russian Siberian border, the Tsaatan people live as reindeer herding nomads, maintaining traditions that date back thousands of years. As one of the world's smallest ethnic minorities, their way of life is now threatened by a new government mandate requiring children to attend school from age six. This presents a heartbreaking dilemma for Tsaatan families, forcing them to choose between preserving their traditions and complying with the law. Through the story of Magsar and his family, the film explores this pivotal moment in the Tsaatan's history, showcasing their deep connection to their reindeer, their isolation in the taiga, and their resilience in the face of a fragile and threatened existence.

I agree. They have been living as nomads for millennial times , Why they want to train them to suffer in the world system. However, they could live more comfortable like the Russian nomads, with some modernities adapted to their lifestyle

Or tobacco. Now and then they go to the towns to trade meat and hand made goods for tobacco and other foods. One of the kids was eating pasta. Their diet is mostly meat and milk from the reindeer or other animals they might catch. When there is a wedding the whole community is invited and many gifts of blankets, clothing and food, kerosine camp cookers, and even booze are given. They have huge feasts with all the extended family and the village invited.

The children do not have the reinforcement of education back at home, so it becomes difficult to advance their lives forward towards university studies, in addition it takes lots of money to sustain 4 years of education to which subsistence farmers can't afford. It becomes a continuous cycle of traditional farming for the younger generations.

It's sad to see a way of life and culture die a slow death. Children should be allowed to choose a lifestyle at a younger age. Education is important, but human diversity is more important. If another ice age comes, who will carry on the human race? Certainly not the rice farmers of the tropics. Maybe the native Eskimoes, Indian tribes of the Amazon or Africa's Sudan, but most of the human race will be reduced to a tiny remnant, and the skills and resilience of a tiny remnant will be of paramount importance. Wall Street bankers, transportation workers, politicians, lawyers, police, industrial workers, bureaucrats, etc... will become irrelevant and extinct, except perhaps some scientists and horticulturists. Not everyone living on the fringes of habitablity should be groomed to be nuclear physicists.
