This is so thoughtful!! I'm a teacher and a lot of other teachers I've seen would scoff at the idea of putting this much extra work into something like sorting. I absolutely love it! It's obviously all about the students and creating an experience they will never forget. Great job!!

I love the idea of the house system, but I am probably going to tweak it to fit the needs of my students! 😀 By the way, I was hired to teach 3rd grade in my district for this upcoming school year! 😀 I am so excited to start this journey of my first year of teaching! 😀 Thank you for your continued support and encouragement! 😀

Take a break, you disserve it. Self care and rest is much needed during the summer. I am in the same dilemma, graduate school will be there.

Take a break! Graduate school in California is similar for those who are working in school. The courses are 1 at a time and back to back to back. The Master's degrees usually take 1 year and a half. I decided a long time ago that since I had no plans to go into Admin, I wasn't going to spend the time or money to get a degree. A few years ago I wasn't finding all the PD that I wanted but then I discovered TpT and then youTube teachers and teachers on Instagram. Basically that's my PD and inspiration to stay fresh and m motivated. Of course I also read online journals (EdWeek, etc.) and blogs (Secondary and Elementary). The online educators community is awesome and keeps me motivated even though I've been teaching 30+ years. You are a great inspiration too! I switched schools which was a great refresher for me. It was a bit scary but I've met good principals and a lot of really great supportive teachers on my journey of change and I expect to meet more this coming year as I move on to my next school!

Split fall classes was not an option during my grad courses in Ohio...sounds awesome though! You can still get 2 classes done in one season, but are able to focus on one at a time while working full-time and being a parent.

Sarah Wheelee I had a teacher in high school who gave us class points based on different periods she taught! P1 English gets 3pts because everyone brought their homework in, p2 English gets 1pt because everyone came to class with a pencil, etc. It was fun to compete with other classes. Especially when she had multiple grades because the grade 10s could see how the grade 11s we're doing and stuff. Really fun!

How is all the “extra” work such as the dragon eggs divided among your team? I know this vlog is only a snippet of your school life, but it seems that you do a lion’s share of the work.

I love the idea of the house system! I would love to do this in my own classroom. My only concern is that, if students are placed into groups randomly, is there a huge discrepancy between success of each group? For instance, does one group have way less points than other groups because of a particularly challenging student? When I student taught, my mentor teacher did a point system by table groups, but there were always one or two groups that couldn't keep up with the other groups because of a student who would often cause them to lose points or just keep them from earning any. The rest of the students in those groups would often lose their motivation to try to earn points because they knew their one group mate would make it difficult for them to compete with the rest of the groups in the class. Do you have any problems like this? I just wondered if students should be strategically placed into groups to try to make each group have as much of an "equal opportunity" to earn points as possible.

Hey lovely! I just simply loved the house sorting idea and I might be using it with my class. So thank you for sharing your fabulous ideas. I am moving classrooms again this year and don’t feel like having a theme as such but to just have a classroom that is cosy and the children love to learn in. I have every year spent so much time and money on focusing on themes which take up nearly all of my summer holidays and I don’t get to spend quality time with family. So this year I have decided to choose family and spend time with them. I think we as teachers we deserve a break and a well earned rest, because we work so hard all year round. I hope you get that rest and quality family time too. We totally get that you need a break so take it and have fun with family:) bye lovely have a fabulous break.
