The bridge is a single leaf bascule, specifically a Scherzer Rolling Lift. The opening section rolls on the two quadrants which support the weight and as it rolls, it moves out of the way of the channel to provide a larger opening than if it just rotated up. The big box over the track is filled with concrete and steel for the counterweight of the span so the motor does not have to lift much weight to open or close the span. There are two heavy beams the quadrants ride on to provide support and guide the span back to open. I am sure the bridge is operable from the dispatcher's office by way of the signal system. At 4:20 and 6:38 are the expansion and guide rails for allowing trains to pass when the span is closed.

I had to look it up, but it's called a bascule (French for _balance scale_ ) bridge. This is a rolling lift, or single-leaf bascule. There is a large one in downtown Tampa over the Hillsborough River.

Thank you for taking us on a tour of the former Atlantic Coast Line bridge over the Miami River that Tri Rail is still using. I do not think that I would be walking across an active railroad bridge during the evening commute. You would have had to be very aware of the train schedules on this line to walk across the bridge safely. Stay safe along the tracks!

Excellent video on this bridge. It's amazing at her age and how many Trains she sees now and will see in the future. With Amtrak looking to start out of MIA station and at some point it has to be logical that TriRail or somebody take passengers down the Homestead extension. The last time that saw that bridge open was right before TriRail started up.

Planes, trains, but no automobiles! Oh well, the boats make up for it. Awesome video and a great bridge tour, even with the planes coming and going nonstop (you must be right by the runway or something!). I LOVE drawbridges like this, and it’s a shame it’s not in action as much as it was, although considering the train traffic that still uses it that’s just as well. Great video and stay safe out there, Roly!

Beautiful bridge! I love it! Thanks for he video Railrol! Looking at it, it doesn’t seem that this bridge has enough clearance for double stacks. If any intermodal facility is built in south Miami Dade County, these trains would have to go around the west end of the runway and use FEC.

American Bridge Company has been in business for a loooong time. I believe they started building bridges just after the civil war. I pass one of their RR bridges daily on my way to work in Washington DC. The bridge has the same type placard it says "American Bridge Company 1913" That bridge still see heavy daily use for Virginia Railway express, Amtrak, and CSX.

E wysocki 15238 48 train currently in motel 6 room 125 beechen drive at loriah Rd ; in crafton pgh pa 15205 July 17 2022 hi rail road 82 happy late fourth been busy with things ! But yes I was a real big fan of Miami vice in the 80s ; my aunt Grace used to live there on my mother's side her and her daughter Louise cut horses and dogs hair ; they were groomers anyway my aunt said it's noted for dope and crime ; yeah I watched Miami vice every Friday after my job at H ; N ; Crosby Co ; I remember that episode Don Johnson had a girl friend on dope he broke up with her she shot him he got better didn't have a memory he turned bad cop for a while then he was a good one for two or maybe three years till NBC decided to not raise his pay anymore he decided to quit and make movies ! So they had another girl friend shoot him in the heart he died in a white suit my mother saw that one and cried why I didn't watch it ; I had a big crush on him ! He was so cute ; so brave because I heard he did all his own stunts ; I had two posters of him in Miami vice on my bedroom wall that caught fire ; the bridge he jump off ; thank God no trains were running ! Also you kids who walk rail road tressles the one above it ! Those trains will crush you to death not only cut you up stay off ! And watch the Miami river this is summer the bull sharks have their young and they mate in the river now so the big sharks don't eat their young ! Stay out of the water they can kill you when their young too ! God bless you 😀
