Crazy! I was just asking and discussing the topics of the light of Christ, the influence of the Holy Ghost, the gift of the Holy Ghost, and the Second Comforter with my mom. I had a bunch of questions and then you post this video the same day!!! Absolutely insane!

Elder Dallin H. Oaks gave a talk titled “Always Have His Spirit” in the October 1996 general conference which clarifies this a bit. He does make a distinction between the spirit of Christ and the Holy Ghost but he also says that the sacrament prayer is specifically talking about the gift of the Holy Ghost. Here’s one quote from his talk that clarifies this: “The gift of the Holy Ghost includes the right to constant companionship, that we may ‘always have his Spirit to be with [us]’ (D&C 20:77).” The whole talk is worth reading. And it makes it even more explicit that the sacrament prayer is talking about the Holy Ghost. Hope this is helpful 😊

I often think of the Light of Christ not as a tangible thing, but the primordial law by which all things are governed. It is the law by which intelligence and happiness can be gained. God and Jesus Christ have simply respected this law and ascended to heights where Their progression can only be measured by the intelligences They assist in achieving the same exaltation. Cleon Skousen takes this a bit further but the gist is that God assists all intelligences to a greater level. God's power, His light, is the respect, obedience, and faith these intelligences have in God.

Elder Bruce R. McConkie discussed the three phases of light. There is the light of Christ, which all children of our Heavenly Father have. After this, he discussed the power of the Holy Ghost, likened unto lightning that flashes, giving light, but only for brief periods. Then he discussed the Gift of the Holy Ghost, which is the greater power. “The testimony before baptism, speaking by way of analogy, comes as a flash of lightning blazing forth in a dark and stormy night; it comes to light the path on which earth's pilgrims, far from their heavenly home and lost in the deserts and swamps of the world must walk if they are to return to the Divine Presence. The companionship of the Holy Ghost after baptism is as the continuing blaze of the sun at noonday, shedding its rays on the path of life and on all that surrounds it. If a devout truth seeker receives a testimony before baptism and does not step forward and receive the gospel, the light is soon gone; the testimony fades away, for one flash of lightning does not show the path ahead for any great distance. An enduring continuance of light and guidance comes only from the sun after the truth seeker leaves the darkness and storms of the night and chooses to walk in the light and calm of the gospel day.”40 7. I found the talk "The Spirit of Christ: A Light amid Darkness" in the May 2001 Liahona rather than the Ensign.

Im glad you talked about the light of christ. Did a decent job. There is more to this but you did well. One other you should do a video on is the gift of the holy ghost. This is also a subject we teach either wrong or so superficial it leads to confusion. The holy ghost, the light of christ and the gift of the holy ghost are 3 completely different things.

Responding to Cathryne Allens comment. Elder Oaks is an Apostle and a member of the first Presidency. If he said that the words "his spirit" refers to the Holy Ghost then that's the end of the story. Of course "his spirit" refers to the Holy Ghost. Most of all this video is correct. The "light of Christ" is that knowledge all men and women have. This knowledge of good and evil may even be referred to as the Spirit of Christ but in the sacrament prayer it is referring to the Holy Ghost. When we are baptized we are given the "constant" companion of the Holy Ghost. When we partake of the sacrament, we renew our baptismal covenant, a covenant which includes us receiving the Holy Ghost as a "constant" companion, thus we are promised that we will "always" have his spirit to be with us meaning we will continue to have the Holy Ghost as a constant companion. Yes the prayer does say "his spirit" but if you approach the meaning through the spirit of the law and not the letter of the law ( meaning not taking " his spirit" literally to mean the light of Christ), then we can see better what is meant by "his spirit". Otherwise, what is the point of the promise. Is the Lord going to promise us something after our loyal effort all week, to receive something that all mankind already possesses, the light of Christ.

What about non-baptized persons partaking of the Sacrament? From that point of view, why would Christ promise them something (the Holy Ghost) they don't have constantly yet?

Christ would not be making any promises or covenants with a non member who takes the sacrament. A non member taking the sacrament is null and void because they haven't been baptised and have made no covenant. The non member has the light of Christ as all men do. He knows good from evil although that is becoming more complicated as satan continues his assaults. That non member can have manifestations from the Holy Ghost if for example the missionaries are teaching him but until they are baptised, that experience would not be " constant" as it would be with a person who is baptised.

I would describe the initiation of the Light of Christ as the promising of of enmity (mutual animosity) to be between the descendants of Adam and Eve, and Satan. After hearing what he planned to do to destroy them, they would have no doubt been full of fear for their posterity and their chances of surviving the second death. To reassure them, God promised to tip the scales slightly in their favor, providing a Light that would lead them to the gospel and it's ordinances (and the greater Lights), a natural loathing and disgust for wickedness and sin.

I really appreciate all your videos! I do have a question though…Referring to your discussion regarding “His Spirit” in D&C 20:77, the footnote points directly to John 14:16, which “Comforter” footnote points directly to the “TG Holy Ghost, Comforter.” Are you saying the footnotes are not correct? Isn’t partaking of the Sacrament the renewing of our baptismal covenants and by doing so doing, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost.

I fully agree it’s Christ’s spirit referred to in sacramental prayer. I have always thought so but today I read a portion of President Oaks’ conference talk of 1998 he says that promise refers to the Holy Ghost which includes the ministering of angels because they speak by the power of the Holy Ghost. Why would partaking of the sacrament in remembrance of Christ’s death guarantee we will always have the Holy Ghost instead of the spirit of the one who died? It doesn’t make sense to me.

Hmm, interesting perspective. I've seen talks by Elder Eyring in 2007 (O Remember, Remember) & 2016 (Gratitude on the Sabbath) link the Holy Ghost with the sacramental promise. I'm curious if your perspective is that he's using the terms interchangeably, or maybe I'm reading it inaccurately, or something else...?

Hey Jason. This video is 90% accurate as is most of the comments. The 10% that is incorrect is where he says the Holy Ghost is not the spirit that is promised in the sacrament prayers. Not only does Henry B Eyring say so but Dallin H Oaks says so too. Always go with the prophets. The light of Christ or the spirit of Christ is given to all men to know between good and evil. The Holy Ghost is a testifier of truth and will visit honest seeking people. If they don't respond by obeying that prompting, the Holy Ghost will leave as in the case of an investigator. The gift of the Holy Ghost is a gift we can have as a constant companion once a member as it says in the sacrament prayer...."always" have his spirit to be with them. The reason why it says "his spirit" in the sacrament prayer is because the Holy Ghost is "his" (Jesus Christ) way of communicating with us.

Check out 3 Nephi 18: 7, 11. In both prayers Jesus speaking in the first person says.." ye shall have my spirit to be with you" Then in 3 Nephi 20:9 it says, referring to the multitude, that they were filled with "the" spirit. "The" spirit referring to the Holy Ghost which caused the multitude to cry out with one voice, praising and glorifying Jesus.

Nice presentation but the question does arise on 'how does this align with the talk by Elder Bednar April 2006 GC'?

…and Dallin H. Oaks’ excellent talk in 10/2004 GC, “Be Not Deceived,” in which he states that the “Spirit” referred to in D&C 20:77 IS the Holy Ghost.

Its true some of these terms are overlaping sometimes and they are sometimes interchangeable..thus the confusion but heres another example. The "spirit of the Lord" is commonly understood to mean the Holy Ghost but if taken literally one would think its referring to the spirit of Jesus Christ which it is not. The Holy Ghost is referred to as the "Spirit of the Lord" because the Holy Ghost is the revelator and messenger of Jesus Christ. In the sacrament prayer "his spirit" means the Holy Ghost because it is by the Holy Ghost that we receive revelation and commune with God the Father and Jesus Christ. If i am overcome during the week with tears because of the manifetstions of the spirit due to my diligent heed to stay close to the Lord, its the spirit of the Holy Ghost that is responsible, not the spirit of Christ or the light of Christ.

Then what is the difference between the light of Christ and the gift of the Holy Ghost?

The light of Christ is like the sun...it's upon all mankind. The light of Christ is an inborn knowledge we have as humans so that our agency may take effect. The light of Christ is knowing what is right and what is wrong, good and evil. The gift of the Holy Ghost is a gift a baptised person receives at confirmation. It is the constant companion of the third member of the Godhead. How cool is that!..😊
