The Last Song of Kauai 'O'o bird (No Background Noise)

Фильм және анимация

The Kauaʻi ʻōʻō (/kɑːˈwɑː.iː ˈoʊ.oʊ/) or ʻōʻōʻāʻā (Moho braccatus) was the last member of the ʻōʻō (Moho) genus within the Mohoidae family of birds from the islands of Hawaiʻi. The entire family is now extinct. It was previously regarded as a member of the Australo-Pacific honeyeaters (family Meliphagidae).

What’s really sad about hearing this is that it’s a duet song, the pause is so that a female can respond back, but no female did as the last female died in 1982-1983, and what’s even worse the is that we didn’t just lose the Kauai ‘ō’ō but we lost the entire Moho Braccatus genius, which includes the Hawaii ‘ō’ō (extinct: 1934), Kauai ō’ō (extinct: 1987), Bishop’s ‘ō’ō (extinct: 1915), O-ahu ‘ō’ō (extinct: 1837). All Moho Braccatus where native to my home country Hawaii. I’d fucking love to see them and hear there songs..

Not females. A specific female. These birds mated for life. In time there was only a single pair left, and when the female perished amid a hurricane, this male became the very, very last of his kind. He didn't know that his mate was gone. He was calling out for her for the rest of his life, unable to know that his call would never receive an answer. At least hearing his own voice played back, even it may have distressed or confused him when it turned out not to be her, it would've created the impression that he wasn't completely alone in the world... when in fact he was. I don't know that there's anything sadder than the life of an endling.

Small birds usually have a hard time fossilizing so more than likely all that will be left of this bird will be the audio recording. 95 percent of the fossil record is incomplete or unkown so think about how many animals over millions of years have disappeared like they never existed to begin with and not known it.

The fact that chirps themselves sound creepy only adds to dreadful feeling. Its so sad that we doomed so many species to extinction often being completely unaware of the extent of what we are doing. I am not one of those degrowth return to monkey guys, but we should at least try not to exterminate everything that isn't a pest species and be more conscious of what we are doing, especially in fragile ecosystems. But in most of the cases, we have realized destruction we left behind far too late...

@@pedrobrandao2768 I wasn't sure, there were articles that said it went extinct in '87, but I also read it wasn't listed as extinct until '89. Maybe they meant it went extinct in '87 but wasn't officially listed until '89 and just back dated it?

@@TheWereman84 The IUCN website might have answers, but what I think happened was some people doing what some do nowadays with the Thylacine, saying they see it but never being confirmed. The Kauai O'o must have had so many people "seeing" it that it was declared the one thing before the species being extinct, however it would just be ignored because if so many were seeing the bird, but none had a photo or video to prove it. Re-declaring it extinct

Even then it would be too late. One breeding pair would continue the species for a few generations but the descendants would all be inbred (little genetic diversity). The odds of bouncing back from a handful of breeding pairs are almost nil, let alone a single breeding pair. Look up “Extinction Vortex.”
