The thing with the DLC in the game, was that it would cut back and forth between Ellie trying to keep Joel alive after the raiders at the university, and the time she spent with Riley in the past. It kinda baffles me that we didn't get the same thing in the show. I mean, I'm pretty sure the flashbacks in the game happened because Ellie was in a similar looking mall as she was trying to find medical supplies to keep Joel alive

  • @pingwingugu5

    @pingwingugu5

    Жыл бұрын

It was, but in game they had to strike a balance between boring (gameplay wise) mall story and the current events which had a lot more action. If DLC was 2hours of just point and click Easter Eggs in mall with bunch of cutscenes and then a 2 hours of proper game play action it would be frustrating. In a show it makes more sense. Plus I noticed the show in general is more grounded, probably because Joel in show cannot take few bullets and just wrap it up to get full health bar like Joel in game. I remember playing as Ellie in the blizzard part, when she escaped David. It fell off, because she was way too deadly for a tiny teenager. She killed like half of the town on her own. I liked how it played out in the show better. I am kind of excited about Last of Us part two, one of the things that bothered me was the dissonance between story and gameplay. Ellie is a bloody killing machine for the whole gameplay, so some of the cutscene moments just didn't land well.

If only you had played the game on "grounded" than you would know that can't happen. He dies in one bullet hit basically. Of course games will have more enemies and more action but the action with Ellie being helped by David and them surviving together told a story, and gave more weight to David actually being a cannibalistic pedophile. It felt like a betrayal. You don't have to have Ellie kill 20 dudes and 30 zombies for that to work in a show. Just have them survive together against 5-6 zombies and then she can kill 1 or 2 dudes and sneak past most of the others. The threat is the same and the emotional weight isn't lost.

Unfortunately we ended up with not enough bonding. The point of the plot was that Ellie needed Joels skills in order to survive. Without the dependency in life and death situations, created by the infected, it’s way harder to buy their father and daughter dynamic. The show didn’t give them enough moments to overcome obstacles. When Joel gets hurt in the game, it’s this huge moment. Ellie lost her protector and now had to grow up and adapt quickly, while being surrounded by all kinds of enemies. Moments like these just hit WAY harder in the game.

I enjoyed Bill and Frank one, but The Mall episode was absolutely long and annoying. 2) Not enough Jole and Ellie scenes, which we could have with shorter backstories. 3) Not enough infected. • @stealthyturtles

Exactly, the show has it portrayed like all you really need to do is go super rural and you’re good. Bills compound was fine the entire time, for like 15-20 years they only show one time infected maybe walked up and it ended up being Frank, and one bandit raid. Just implied it wasn’t that bad. The two old people living in the cabin just chilling and hunting didn’t seem to have any issues. Tommy’s entire compound had access to electricity, running water, multiple types of housing and resources for pretty much all jobs and tasks. I think they even said they get pockets of infected sometimes but just wipe them out and the main threat is raiders, and that place was huuuge. David’s compound, although starving, seemed not worried about infected. There was no infected in their area or the university or the small towns / city limits outside of the hundreds underground in KC. The last infected on screen is one from 14-15 years prior, where Ellie’s mom got bit. Sure we don’t get new movies or mass produced music or extremely easy access to food and other modern commodities in this universe, but is that really the worst thing? Most places have it figured out it seems.

The show is basically Neil Druckmann’s fan fiction of what he wishes the original story was, and its changes to Joel are custom built to justify what happens next season. For better or worse, HBO’s Joel is a more dramatic, vulnerable character. He tries to cover himself in a false bravado, but his trauma spills over when he is pushed too far. This is perfect setup for someone who will ultimately just bumble around and gets himself killed. Conversely, the original Joel was repressed down to his core. Any vulnerability trickled out like tiny droplets during moments of calm, and pushing only caused him to shut off and reinforce his walls. Even at his most honest, he’d only ever learned how to use that emotional toolbox of a southern blue collar worker. He was far too pragmatic and defensive to ever behave as they made him in Part 2. tl;dr The apocalypse turned HBO-Joel into who he is. It turned OG-Joel into too much of who he already was.

But it doesn't have the same emotional impact and great storytelling as the game did. The recent remake for the PS5 was absolutely badass and breathed more life into the characters and setting. But, I am also happy the show's helped the game become popular again and boosted its sales significantly.

Let's just say they made Joel's choice a lot more ambiguous and morally gray than in the game. In the game, the Fireflies knocked him out when he was pumping out Ellie who had drowned in the water, they were not going to return his backpack to him (he found it himself) and even more so to pay him for delivering Ellie with weapons, it was not explained exactly how the vaccine would work and why they could not conduct experiments on Ellie's blood. In the series, Ellie is treated much more carefully, Joel was going to return his things and be paid, how the vaccine works, explained quite realistically. At the same time, Joel kills people who have already surrendered, and not just armed ones (although he spared the nurses). However, in both cases, Ellie was not allowed to make a choice and give consent or refusal. Despite the fact that she is a minor and has not reached the age of consent ... And most importantly, even if the vaccine is administered to all people (which is impossible), it still will not save the world. Millions of infected people who tear and devour people, thousands of cannibals and robbers will not go anywhere, and there will simply not be enough hands and heads to restore the energy grid, the economy and the social system. So summing up, I'm still on the side of Joel.

If they want the adaptation of part 2 to work, they need to introduce Abby and her story first, tell her whole backstory, ending the season with the climax of her learning of her father's death and who is responsible. Season 3 opens with the Joel/Abby/Ellie scene, and kicks off Ellie's revenge quest. Season 3 finale is the finale of the game. They need to dispense with the mystery of the "who is this Abby and why did she murder Joel" mystery the game tried to create suspense with. For new viewers, if they don't create massive identification with and empathy for Abby FIRST, it'll suffer a lot of the same problems part 2 the game suffered. To be fair, I sent really got a lot out of the part 2 game's masochistic gameplay and story, but this change is, imho, a near must for the TV show to sink in and be well received.

It was the bonding that made them grow together, not just the one incident of Ellie nursing Joel. They also stole Ellie's comment that had so much meaning to Ellie, 5 seconds shy after naming the people who died "when is it my turn". Ellie wanted to die after shooting her best friend and wanted her death to have meaning which Joel took away. I've always felt like the Fireflies were a useless bunch. From the other Doctors who wondered if there work was even moral and some wondering if they could even afford morality. Especially with Joel there was a lot of grey area because even he second guesses himself in a time where he was acting completely off of impulse. That this show is getting a pat on the back from so-called critical reviewers is, to me, just further evidence that standards are being gradually degraded over time, which is probably at least some part of why media seems to continue getting worse and worse. I honestly get the sense that some seem to be going out of their way to give it a pat on the back, and I don't get the hesitancy or reluctance to categorize it for what it is: mediocre at best. Just because it's not an absolute, wall-to-wall dumpster fire of the same ilk as RoP, etc. (not to worry, I'm sure it'll get there eventually on this trajectory) doesn't mean it deserves at pat on the back. My problem: You've got 9 episodes to tell a badass story about a man a teenage girl's relationship in a hellscape. They spent 1 full episode on a side char's gay romance and 1 full episode on the lost gay love of the teenage girl. So many amazing action and dialogue sequences in the game were chucked so they could do this. And what pisses me off is I know WHY they did this... which just poisons the rest of the show for me. Plus we got a Karen girl boss for 2 episodes that gets 100's of people killed for stupid reasons. And they made a character deaf to check a box.

Who tf makes 9 and not 10? Just one more episode to really flesh out Ellie and Joel together would’ve have made a *huge* difference, especially with pacing bc episode 9 was jarring with how fast they pushed the relationship.

All that aside, how in the world would they have brought that tractor battery out of the city in the first episode without being noticed if it was functional? Or how would they have got out of the city with a car? Or how would they have delivered a heavy-ass battery to a car, outside of a derelict city, when they can barely traverse it on foot while lightly packed? Also, how in the earth did they manage to have serviced a twenty plus years old car to be functional, but can't start it without a battery? Why didn't they have already made their own batteries or supra-capacitors? Also: car tire shelf life, hydraulic fluid shelf life, lubrication fluid shelf life, rubber seal shelf life, timing belt shelf life, fan belt shelf life are all less then ten years. They can get all of those for the specific make and model, but not a battery. Not to mention, that in that climate, all abandoned cars would have rusted beyond saving, especially the bearings and the breaks. And I wouldn't even harp on any of these if they didn't make a major plot point that they only lack a battery to get to Joel's brother, who may or may not be in danger, or may or may not be dead already.

Between episodes 3 & 7, the latter was way more relevant to the overall story. It covers how Ellie got bit and gives her a tragic backstory that sheds light on the speech that she gave Joel about knowing what loss is. Otherwise, Sam would've been her only personal motivation (already halfway through her journey) to save the world since her & Tess weren't really that close. The flashback in the 3rd episode doesn't even matter since all that needed to happen was for Joel & Ellie to find Bill's letter.

Not only that, but they actually kind of flipped the dynamics of those scenes. In the game Bill's section has relevance to the story and helps establish Ellie's story and had a realistic grounded tone. But the DLC was unnecessary and cartoonish. Meanwhile in the show, Bill's section was an unrealistic cartoon with no relevance to the story, but Ellie's backstory was made much more realistic and grounded and adds a lot to both Ellie's story while also emphasizing her current situation and feeling of helplessness. that said both episodes drag out too much. (I can at least see why 7 fills up most of it with backstory so that the following part with David can be left for the next episode rather than cutting into the middle of it for time if it were attached to the second half of episode 7, and to add more to Ellie's backstory)

The great thing about this genre of post apocalyptic story telling is the notion discussed in "The Road", and that is does the world deserve to be saved. So much in the game shows you that people do not deserve the cure Elle and Joel are trying to create which makes that climatic finale and debate of what Joel chooses to do all the more impactful. The people still alive can be compared to the monsters that still roam around which is supposed to make you think what the point of saving those who have lost their sense of humanity would be. The Last of us show does not do this because it decides to try and humanize the challenges throughout Elle and Joel's journey. Neil undoubtedly pushes this notion of violence begetting violence, which is a classic theme but not interesting. For my money I will always prefer someone who asks you to think beyond the norms we are used to and the game I think does a way better job of making you think man things are really fucked up, is it possible for people like David or anyone in Kansas city to redeem themselves. The human in you will always say yes but the realist will tell you to not be greedy and take what you have found for yourself, that in this case being Elle.

I haven't played the game, just watched the thing almost 10 years ago by now, so take that in mind. My only real problem with the show was on its ending, which really felt like it was saying "Joel is the bad guy". It didn't feel dubious at all. In the game it's hinted a lot that Ellie's sacrifice might be for nothing and that it might as well not work at all, making the player (or in my case, viewer) wonder and worry that it may be best not to do I cause it may be futile. In the show it felt like the emphasis was on Joel stopping the thing (being "a toxic overprotective father") rather than the moral dilemma of doing it or not. The ending should've felt like Schrödinger's cat dilema, not an almost clear cut "Joel's the bad guy". There should have been, in my opinion, an entire episode of various characters' perspectives on sacrificing Ellie or not for the possibility of a cure.

For me, the whole thing felt so rushed (whilst at the same time so slow because a whole lot of nothing could happen for long stretches at a time). Ultimately, I don't think they gave the necessary time to do justice to the heart of the story: Joel and Ellie (none of the emotional moments hit because it didn't feel believable that they would feel so deeply for one another given how little it had felt they had gone through). For that reason, I don't think it was a successful adaptation. They also didn't do the world justice because, generally, the feeling of dread just wasn't there. Omitting the Infected from the show as much as they did was a mistake, and same for action in general. Action isn't just pew pew, bang bang; it's conflict - conflict that would have done wonders for the development of our protagonists, both on an individual level and regarding their relationship.

It was kinda funny how Joel asks Tommy about the trip from Jackson to the University and its like "Its barley possible, only once have we returned with few survivors" Then Joel and Ellie get the entire way there with 0 resistance and only face 1 Cannibal on there way out. the sad part was they did such a good job with the Zombie's when they were on screen. Clickers were hard to stop and a Bloater was almost impossible. I feel like Bella gets a bad rap because Ashley is just a MUCH better and more experienced actor than she is. Pedro is a great actor and you can see that he has that darker force when hes given stuff to work with but the script directions muted him alot to just be "Grumpy old guy". Its just a hard comparison because Troy and Ashley did a better job and had more to work with and more time to do it as there are alot less restraints on studio filming compared to on location shots. There isn't going to be a Season 4. HBO have only ordered Season 2, but Mazin and Druckman are hopeful for a Season 3 to "finish it off". They probably will get a S3, but you never know. In my opinion, this show is a great example of how shit video game stories are. It was an average show, being hyped up by people who played the games as the greatest story ever told, but it's really not. It's just Ripley and Newt in Alien 2, or Grant and Tim and Lex in Jurassic Park. And frankly, both of those films did it a lot better. Anyway, HBO usually wait till they have seen a full season internally before renewing them, which is why their renewal announcements usually come after the first or second episode. It's all going to come down to if they decide to kill Joel off, and if the ratings survive what the games didn't. Personally I think the way they did S1 it's pretty clear they will be killing Joel immediately and pivoting to a more progressive and inclusive main character, who isn't defined by her gender and.. 😴😴😴 Anyway, it's going to be close to two years till we see S2, so we will just have to wait and see what happens.

I think a lot of the changes from the video-game story were kinda weird and cheesy. One of my favorite parts of the game is the arc with Henry and Sam because of the way their dynamic mirrors Joel and Ellie and reinforces the difficulty of opening yourself up emotionally in a dying world. The inclusion of that whole sidestory with the revolutionary leader (the woman with the voice of a 5 year old) was laughable and really detracted from one of the stronger side stories in the game.

When Kathleen asks him "Is Sam worth everything", she means everything: was saving Sam worth the lives of countless people that were tortured, rap*d and killed by FEDRA and the many more lives that could have been saved if Michael were still alive? I didn't think Bella Ramsey was a good Ellie and I got a bit sick of seeing Reddit lose their mind for something which I didn't think was really going to live up to its promise. Tess' death scene just wasn't a patch on the acting and dialogue in the game and I didn't want to keep comparing stuff like that so I thought it was easier just to leave it for other people to enjoy. Still, reading up on what they got wrong its still baffling how a team with such a big budget, time and...supposed talent can still drop the ball in big enough ways for everyone to see. Sometimes I'm reminded even the Drinker can be blinded to glaring plot holes. If the Fireflies know how Ellie became immune, why do they even need her in the first place? On top of that, they changed the morally gray ending by changing the context of the situation. It reaks of Neil Druckman's rewriting of the Fireflies in TLOU2 to be selfless kind people that they simply never were in the original game.

Something I've noticed as I've watched Drinker over the years, and maybe it's just me, is that Drinker seems to be more lenient on things that he would have otherwise pointed out directly in his older videos. Maybe he's trying to be more "open" or whatever to appeal to wider spectrum of watchers, all power to him if that's the case, but it irks me still. I feel like he's going too easy on this show to be honest, he could have went really hard on it, it's pretty clear to any TLOU fan that there are things wrong with this show, but this video seemingly ignores a lot of them or downplays them to cast the show in a better light. Like claiming the ending was just as powerful as the original game's? Maybe that's true for someone with no ties to the original source material, who is able to stomach the glaring flaws the rest of the show has. Everything previous to the ending taints it, and while it may not be as bad as other shows, it's still subpar entertainment with very obvious agenda's inserted.

Drinker talks about 'oOh sTrOnG iNdePeNDaNt ELlIe' but she's just a slightly more headstrong game Ellie. And to be honest, I think the ending was more impactful than the game for 2 reasons: Pascal's acting was far more real than the game's, the scene where he wakes up in the hospital room hits you like a truck especially as it happened right after the scene he and Ellie had together. And two, Marlene's history with Ellie and her mother, and the line Marlene delivers to that point. The only thing that made the game ending more emotional was 1) the score and 2) the fact that it was a 20 hour game as opposed to like 11 hours of TV. That said, I do agree that there were a lot of things Drinker could have nitpicked that he didn't

Well Drinker, I have to say the answer to both of the questions you asked was "No!" And "No." Was it faithful to the source? God no. Just the ending they setup would make this a flat no, to say nothing of the massive changes to side characters and main characters. Will it do a good job adapting it? No, it already failed on point one, but even if we ignore that (a pretty huge ask) the quality of adaptation is just pitiful. Could it have been worse? Maybe. It's hard to tell. You know the uncanny valley effect? Well that applies to the harm a deliberately misstructured 'adaptation' of a story can inflict. Something like Witcher Blood Origin is so pathetically bad it doesn't have much impact. No one with an opinion I have any respect for would even try to defend it. See Rings of Power for similar levels of failure. But then you have something like this, where for some reason, by being slightly less shite, some folks are willing to give a pass. Is this the standard you consider good now Drinker? Is this acceptable to you? Because it truly should not be. Now maybe with time for reflection your viewpoint will change on this 'adaptation'. Maybe it won't. Or maybe I'm just not hearing the depth of sarcasm you intended.

I honestly can't remember that happening in the game (it might have, but I really can't remember it...) and it took over an hour to set up something that could've been explained in a few lines of dialogue, e.g; Ellie: "Where are we going?" Joel: Some guys I know built their own little compound. They can help us with some supplies." Ellie: "Ok, cool!" Joel and Ellie arrive at compound. Joel: "Oh shit, they're dead. Fuck." Ellie: "Well we can still take some supplies, right?" Joel and Ellie take supplies and move on. I felt the whole episode was just to drive home the point that even gay, paranoid recluses can find love in a post-apocalyptic world... well, no sh1t, sherlock! I also felt the final episode was a little anti-climactic... I remember the end of the game being a little intense action-wise and there definitely needed to be more zhroombies in the later episodes. @@Oxygen97 That’s actually not what Joel is like in the game at all. This isn’t Max Payne or Doom or some macho fantasy. It’s tempting when you’re older to be a snob and look down on the “game” as though it’s something juvenile, but the truth is: this medium has leapt forward with each generation, and Naughty Dog Studios told a better story through the game because that’s what they set out to do and they have a wider array of tools to pull it off. Making a tv show out of it was probably a step backward. What was intuitive and interactive is now linear 🤷🏻‍♂️. It’s one of the many challenges that game adaptations have. The big emotional moments that were lifted from the game kinda fell flat. I suppose you wouldn’t notice if you haven’t watched the story unfold through the game already. If you haven’t played the game, I’d recommend this show. Otherwise, I wouldn’t

I liked the series for what it was. Pedro Pascal nailed it as Joel, both in acting and presentation. And Bella Ramsey's performance felt just like Ellie at times, despite being 40% forehead. But the show doesn't stand up to the game at all. I share the same opinions on the issues you listed, though, my biggest issue is that most of the big emotional moments felt way weaker. Joel's injury at the collage was one of the most intense moments of the game for me, and the show skipped the desperate fight to escape entirely. The rebar was replaced with a lackluster stab wound, and they just left right after. Tess's final scene had a weird spaghetti mouth make out scene for some fucking reason. Overall, there was a lot of pulled punches like that. Though the new scene with Ellies mom near the end was a surprise that gut punched me. They also cut a lot of combat scenes, including ones that played a big part in the emotional pacing of the story. Such as the one right after Joel and Ellie's fight. Which forced a pause on the argument and gave time for us, and the characters to digest/reflect on what was said. I get its a lot of work and money to do big action scenes, but it just felt really disappointing at times. Especially the lack of infected. I have a slew of other issues, but they are nitpicks. I am far too neurodivergent to enjoy the show with all the changes made. But hey, at least its not the Halo TV show.
