That’s what I was thinking. It was done better than the game tbh. Joel yelling at the lady to lock her doors and seeing the chaos on the streets was just terrifying. Imagining those people inside watching the infected for the first time from inside. Freaky stuff.

They show runners made this choice bc they said making things happen in the future (like the game did) is less relatable to the audience and causes a disconnect.

The only problem I saw with it is that you can see the explosion and hear the shockwave at the exact same time. Thematically speaking, though, it perfectly sets the scene for what's to come.

It kinda breaks my heart how Young and healthy Joel looks in here, his well cutted bear and his hair, even if things weren't the best, he still looked like a normal person, like your uncle or your Dad, someone that you would think that the meanest thing he has done was a high-school fight or something. Joel would have been 18-19 years old when he had Sarah. Joel was 31 and Sarah died at 12 on outbreak day. Absolutely heartbreaking when you find that out, ever since he was a young man Joel was ALWAYS an amazing father. RIP Joel and Sarah Miller 🙏

I never even played this game and this scene brings me to tears. The way she cries really hits home. If you can do this as an actor/actress, good job, but if you can do this as an actor/actress through motion capture, youre on another level of talent. Wow.

@@Arberin Personally, I like the accuracy. I hate it when movies take inspiration but go their own way when the game has already done the story so well. If anything, I was a little disappointed that some of the scenes and characters in the series don't match up with the game. But overall I think the first episode has been very good.

I know and it’s worse for a father or mother watching their own child die. And for some reason my mind is so twisted it made an AU where Sarah had a sister and her sister didn’t see her die. Meaning she didn’t even say goodbye. My mind is twisted😑

It's crazy how Joel went worrying about losing his job to living the reality of having lost everything especially Sarah

They let him go hard in part two ultimate sniper status takes out Manny and nearly get the better of Abby and even though he was stabbed he just backhands yara and goes back to Abby if not for Yara he'd have gotten her I feel

12:39 this scene would've been perfect if it weren't for that wilhelm scream. It got a chuckle out of me but it kinda kills the serious mood because it's a "funny movie sound effect"

I think it’d be cool if someone made a video showing a close up at stuff happening during the background. Like the paramedics running towards the hospital next to the guy getting out of his car to yell or the people wrestling infected at the gas station only to all get blown up. I think little moments are what makes the running scene so immersive.

wow the new face animations really complete this scene now, the voice acting was always good but now it's amazing

Sarah’s death in the show was moving for sure but ten years later and this scene still makes me cry a little.

the whole time i was watching the opening sequence of the series i couldn't get over how incredible the attention to detail was. Had to come back here to compare. little things you might not have put too much thought into while playing the game, had entire scenes dedicated to them. among many other things.

Same, I'm so impressed how similar they made it look, although in my opinion Sarah's death is a bit more emotional in the game than TV series. But still I'm so amazed by the attention to the details! And how some shots are almost identical and resembles the experience you get when playing the game

@@jjhancarter1920 to my surprise it was more emotional in the series because of the amount of time they gave Sarah as well, to see the kind of kid she was and that her death is just so in vain. Nico did a fantastic job.

So I played this a long time ago but now I’m a dad to a toddler (who is a complete psycho) and I watched the first episode of the television show and rewatched this… damn does it resonate more with me. Losing my little psycho is my greatest fear and this game captures the true horror of it.

The worst part about this is I don’t even think that it was a single gunshot that hit Sarah I think she got shot multiple times just based off of how much blood was all over her shirt. Usually when you get hit like that it doesn’t immediately soak your entire shirt, her case was horrible.

Exactly. This was not a sort of sort of thing. She bled fast. Even in a good situation it's hard to say if she stood a chance of surviving long enough to get aid. And they were alone

I’m crying over the fact Joel’s brother was protecting them and was willing to risk he’s life for he’s brother and niece.

The show absolutely nailed this opening scene! Wow!

I think there's no possible way they could have better set the stage for the chaos and Sarah's death than the first few minutes of the scene where they just interact as a father and daughter, It's cheeky it's real And it's so touching without trying hard at all. Makes you really understand the bond they have and makes you wish you had something like that too, or if you do have that it makes you think about it personally. And then to see it all get ripped away so horribly and so quickly really puts you into the head space of someone who is completely broken going into the game. It's just genius.

I thought the show nailed Sarah’s death but trying to top the game version is trying to top perfection

i love how this popped up in my feed because of the new live action trailer. this game one of the GOATs for storytelling. unforgettable experience. the more i see things about it and here, revisiting the opening scene, the entire time you're experiencing running away from the infected as the main personification of the "evil" of the story. but ultimately, it was the complexity of humanity that killed Sarah. foreshadowing of the story to come. absolutely brilliant.

I’ve seen and played this scene many times and I still tear up. 😢

HBO has 1 mission: don’t screw this opening up. Probably one of the greatest openings to a game ever.

Absolutely loved the first episode of the HBO series. They did an amazing job on this sequence! I came back to compare things and there were only a few minor changes the TV show made compared to this sequence. I love how the TV show added their own thing with the airliner jets flying over their tuck to make an emergency landing and then one of them just crashes into a ball of fire in front of them. Made the scene ever more intense!

They basically approached this as a tv show rather an adaption so yeah some changes are gonna have to be made for a better viewing experience. I binge played the entire game when it came out that’s how much I loved it but this is till really great in its own right

I agree that the video game is and will always be better than the show, but I liked how the TV show sprinkled on a little more of their own explosive action in the first episode.

Damn. I remember watching Markiplier playing this for the first time when it came out and that beginning scene made me cry so hard. And here I am 10 years later and that scene still makes me cry just as hard. The first episode of the show did a really great job of that opening scene. But I think the game is still more emotional. I have high hopes for the show.

Yeah I watched them both back to back and it was the music in the game that made it hit harder(Sara's death)

My God the graphics are so great. Sarah and Joel look like real people! It's even more sad for Sarah man...

10 years later and it still makes me bawl my eyes out.

The atmosphere of this opneing is one of the best I've ever seen. It nails practically everything you need to set-up the story.

Made in 2013 and still the most chilling opening sequence in any game I’ve ever seen

*no game has ever made me cry until this game came out. and till this day it still remains number 1 of my favorite games of all time. i dont think any game will ever top this game on my favorites list.*

This still hits just as hard as the first time I played it. A HUGE round of applause to Nico Parker's acting during this scene. She did an amazing, amazing job (as did the rest of the cast) and thank you HBO for doing this justice so far! ❤

You look in the right angles and check out all the stuff, its a good play, well done.

I grew up in Houston but have lived in Austin the past several years. The opening just hits different now. Excited to see the HBO show.

Something that just crossed my mind. I think the story would have been interesting to see upon Sarah's point of view. I mean, sure she was injured on her leg. But what if Joel would have died, or she and Joel would have got separated. And Sarah would grow having to be strong

Sarah's death was very well handled. It took me by surprise. I was expecting Joel to die, since she was the first person we got to control.

I liked the change of Joel's wallpaper from the original. It shows how much of a dedicated farther he is.

I was blown away watching the HBO show thinking about this opening. It was so similar. I got chills reliving this moment.

Bro… when Sarah died… I was like “Why Mr. Video game?” That hit me HARD. Rest in Peace, Sarah. 😔

Just came here after watching this part on the first episode of TLOU on HBO. The game one remains unmatched.

@@hx20games77Pedro Pascal’s a great actor and so to get him, they needed to change the race of Tommy and Sarah too because they’re all part of the same family - they’re a package deal. Ellie’s still white so it’s not like you’re missing any white representation, and honestly if Joel has to have a slightly different background to match Pascal’s, then so be it because Pedro Pascal has been brilliant so far. Such an intense performance!

14:11 I love the attention to detail in this scene, how you can hear the screams of people and zombies in the background really adds to the sadness and horror

The “Dawn of the Wolf” poster seems like foreshadowing to make Joel the badass he is and an homage to the Dawn of The Dead series. Dope.

It had been 11 years and sill to this day, no other scene in any video game, movie or TV show has hit this hard. Lowkey changed the landscape of what makes a good "apocalypse" intro.

I came here because charlie (moist critikal) paised this opening in his new video, having never played this game before and by the end I was in tears. If you can make me cry for characters I've known for 16 minutes, you've done a damn good job. Might have to play this masterpiece god damn!

I love when a show makes a PERFECT copy of a game. It just is so perfect.

The animation is just fantastic for this game. I’m glad it has a impecable writing to carry on with it.

There's not one game with an intro that hit me with a haymaker right that, right in the feels. Such good voice acting

The game scene was so great HBO followed it to a degree.

The First Episode of the Show actually added more moments and while that made it bigger in scope, at least the Game still gave us that same intense feeling. Love it
