Bella Ramsey is such a brilliant actress. That short, horrified yelp as she watches Henry take his own life is heartbreaking. I refuse to get attached to anymore new characters. I'm just going to assume "Well. . . they're dead!"😢

Excellent acting by Bella in the scene where Henry shoots himself. Her whimpers instinctively gave me a fatherly urge to hug her Ellies "I'm sorry" at the end got me so hard. Crying counter 4 of 5 episodes

One of the things that I find really beautiful about this episode is that you can really see the juxtaposition between Ellie and Joel changing. Eli is becoming so much more hardened by all of the awful things she has to witness, and her innocence slowly eroding the more and more she lives in this world, and then, on the other hand, you see Joel, who is softening up more and more and learning to sort of give people a chance, and to trust people, which is so hard for him

The question Sam asked "If you turn into a monster are you still you inside" is the same question Henry is asking of himself about the compromises he's had to make to keep Sam safe and alive ("I am the bad guy, because I did a bad guy thing."). Is the good guy I thought I was, that I wanted to be still in me?

@@d3l3tes00n "don't usually" and "definitely" really don't line up. And in the world of The Last of Us, who is the good guy and who is the bad guy is entirely a function of whose point of view you are taking. This is explored in the David section of Part 1, but it is made even more explicit and even more a core theme in Part 2.

@@chimaxx Oh I'm aware which is why I love it, but I still stand by what I said. I can see all perspectives. Truly bad people don't care who they hurt & wouldn't sit around feeling guilty & spending the rest of their lives trying to make up for what they did. I still don't see his actions as "bad guy" actions. Even Kathleen's brother didn't.. he understood. I'd agree.. forgive in this situation. Not respecting her brother's wishes is what bothers me the most.

Sniper does not have "shit aim". Kathleen wants the 4 of them ALIVE. Sniper would have orders to just pin them down until the main force arrives to apprehend the 4 of them. Snipper is missing on purpose. The role of snipers is not purely "Kill and Cover" but often to hold an enemy force at bay until reinforcements can arrive.

The answer to Sam's question about if it's still you inside is answered in the beginning of episode 3. When Ellie holds the knife up to the infected in the convenience store basement, it followed it with his eye. It recognized the knife for what it was. The person was still inside and aware.

Makes it super poetic that Fedra got the last laugh by locking all those infected underground. And how Kathleen went out from a kid because they "die all the time." I reckon Jefferey Pierce (Perry/Tommy in the game) asked for a brutal death and definitely got one! The way he looked at that Bloater gave me the impression that he's never seen one before. Love how rare they are in the game and the show! 👌🏻 Henry & Sam's deaths never get easier to watch no matter what medium it's in 😞

So happy to see the themes and messages in the game get expanded upon even more in the show. Because what I love about The Last of Us, that I think is explored so well in this episode in particular, is that things are not always 'Good or bad with no inbetween'. When it comes to survival, there is moral ambiguity in every decision and the dangers of allowing emotions, in particular vengeance and rage taking over logic and reason (which ends up being even more prevalent in The Last of Us 2) Kathleen should have warned the people about the sinkholes, but she was blinded by her rage and anger towards Henry and chose to seek vengeance over the sake of the people, which ends up dooming an entire city to death. Something that her brother Michael would never have done. Her moral compass was Michael and when Perry says that he "was a great man but he didn't change things, you did". That is true, but he wouldn't have let things go that far or put people in danger and Kathleen did change things, but not for the better. It makes the whole situation even more tragically ironic when she calls Henry selfish for wanting to save one person "You think the whole world revolves around him? That he's worth everything?" , because that's exactly what she has done too. She puts an entire city of people in mortal danger just to get revenge for one person. If she'd just listened to Michael and chosen to forgive, then things would have had a very different outcome.

Great job, I always enjoy you guys. Ok, I'm probably going to catch some flack for this. The sniper was not a bad shot, his job was to use suppressing fire to keep them pinned down until the rest of the group could arrive and capture them. He could only take out one of them sniping, but by shooting how he did, they were trapped.

Ellie and Joel switch sides at the end. That was the Tess moment from episode 2. Ellie runs ahead while Joel is still waiting at the grave. Tess gave Joel a mission he wanted to fulfill as her last wish. The relationship that Joel had with Tess was similar to Ellie and Sam. Ellie promised (unspoken with hope) Sam the cure here and couldn't keep this promise. She now wants to make sure that this never happens again. As Tess said at the time "save who you can save". Ellie really has a mission now. Indirectly get through her feelings of guilt. She wants her blood to work. Before that, she was someone who had no control over anything. Others have determined where she grows up and where she has to go now. "I didn't ask for this" were her words in episode 2. Now that has changed. Now conviction plays a role and she takes control. She wants to save the world so that there are no more Sam's. And while Joel gradually finds his humanity again and lets people into his life again, Ellie loses a little more of herself and she takes the lead here in the end. I think the series showed that more clearly in this way than the game did. In addition, Ellie and Joel have reached a new level of connection with each other. Wordless understanding. Both wanted to save the brothers during the attack. That wasn't Joel's "don't do it Ellie" look. That was the look "I'll give you fire protection Ellie". And Ellie has absolute confidence in Joel. There was also a little joke about the game. The moment when the sniper shot and Henry and Sam senselessly ran out of cover, only to return immediately. This is how Ellie behaved very often in the game. She ran out of cover, right in front of the enemy and then back again. An interesting feature of the show so far is that real brutality is only shown to us when Ellie sees it. We see Joel beating the soldier to death in episode 1 because Ellie is there and sees it. Ellie tortures and kills the stalker in episode 3. We see Joel's sniper kills because Ellie sees them. We see Henry's death, Sam being shot and Kathleen's death. With all other killings (Old Sniper, Bryan) you only hear it because the camera is focused on Ellie while she doesn't see these killings herself.

It wasn't just that it was her brother. Could Brian have been her son? When she is in her childhood room, Perry said he talked to Kathleen's mom. And knowing KC FEDRA, most likely put on public display afterwards as a warning.

I think its even a bit worse when you factor in Ethics/Morals into the show scenario. For one this is a tragedy. In tragedies all stories are sad and usually end with everyone either dead or in a worse state. Druckmann said that episode 3 was the happy episode so we know where this is going. The story is a story about love wrapped in a zombie narrative. Mazin the other showrunner said this is a story about how love keeps us together in dire times and that same love may doom us. In this show every character did what they did out of love for someone. As a result they are all dead. That is the them of the whole story. This is the last of humanity. The apocalypse has come and gone and this is just what happens to those who remain on the other side. The real monsters are the humans and only their love can save them or destroy them.

I find it difficult to accept how many people seem to 'relate to' or 'feel sorry for' Henry, who betrayed to his death, the leader of the rebellion. I wonder if they same people would have felt this same way about the guy if he had turned in Princess Leia to Darth Vader and she had been murdered? What about Lord Bolton who betrayed Rob Stark? Did you feel sorry for him? I don't understand why the idea that Sam was a little boy makes a difference since men have been laying down their lives for causes and to protect the people they love for centuries. The fact is Henry sacrificed the lives of all those people who were murdered by the resistance, he also sacrificed the lives of all the resistance fighters (those killed by the infected at the end of the episode) instead of simply dying on his own sword or allowing his brother to give his life for the rebellion.

Kathleen was being hypocritical. She changed a whole city to satisfy her revenge for her brother's death. She dared suggest that Henry should have let go of Sam when she can't let go of her own brother. Both were ready to do the worst for their brother, so how was she any different from him ? Had the situation been reversed, we know for sure that Kathleen would have done the same, if not worse, to save her own brother. Also, I disagree with your take on saying that all the death that occurs was because of Henry's decision. Kathleen made decisions too after that. She's the one who ordered a blockade, she's the one who killed the doctor, and ordered the death of the collaborators, she told Anthony to stall Henry and Sam, and she's the one who came with the trucks that freed the infected. Henry didn't force Kathleen to do any of that, her own thirst for revenge did, at the cost of disrespecting her brother's last request even.
