Those things are unbreakable. Last time it slipped out of my dad's hands, it made a dent in the wall. The laptop was ok.

One reason why IBM sold the PC business to lenovo is they had already been manufacturing PCs and laptops for IBM. Not exactly sure when they started that. I have a T43p that on the bottom has a sticker that says "Made by Lenovo for IBM in China" Older thinkpads were made in Mexico with US made parts. So it's really hard to say exactly what is a true IBM thinkpad. You could say that the 60 series was the last to carry on an IBM design, and after that, it was 100% Lenovo design and build. Further complicating matters though is when IBM sold to Lenovo, the head honcho designer followed to work for Lenovo, David Hill iirc. So even after the 60 series, you still have an ex IBMer leading the design. For me personally, for my collection, I only consider laptops made before the sale to be "true IBM thinkpad", even if it's sort of an arbitrary line to draw. I am still fond of the new thinkpads and I think Lenovo has done a great job at keeping the name alive and making some very good thnkpads. I currently use the Lenovo X1 tablet, which is in a lot of ways the least "thinkpad" like machine I own, except it does stay true to how IBM was never afraid to try new form factors that break the mold. Outside of the 'normal' thinkpads, IBM also made a lot of quirky designs for thinkpads over the years and with mixed results, but they definitely were not shy about experimenting with new ideas.

i got an ibm thinkpad from my fathers boss when i was 6 years old, i sadly dont know the model anymore but it had slim bezels and ran windows 98 and didnt have a trackpad. The sad thing about the thinkpad was that it died and we trew it out.

Great video explaining some of the finer details of the Lenovo acquisition, I agree with the IBM/Lenovo dual badged systems as the last true IBM Thinkpads as they were likely in some stage of development at IBM when the deal was done, and thus IBM would have had some say in many of their design decisions.

T61 and X61 models with both IBM and Lenovo logos are rare, but they exist. It seems they stopped using the IBM logo during the production of those models. At the end of the day, the logo isn't such a big deal. The ThinkPad logo alone is good enough.

you forgot to mention a R61 thinkpad with IBM logos, i have one, it still works too! i have a goal to get a regular R61 and add IbM logos, add a larger screen, webcam, new board(modern board)lkeep the keyboard, new speakers, better microphone, new battery, ultra-bay compatibility, and a Disc Drive(probably DVDRW-CDRW, and much, MUCH more. i hope eventually it will work in the end and be an epic sleeper laptop

Sorry to say, but your video is inaccurate in some key parts. The IBM logo was NOT discontinued with the T61, X61 and R61. All of those were sold with the IBM ThinkPad logo. But they were also sold without the IBM logo - Lenovo started to make the IBM ThinkPad logo optional. It wasn't an instant transition, rather, both options were offered side by side. You will find X60 and T60 machines without the IBM logo, as well as T61 and X61 machines with the IBM logo. The IBM logo was discontinued with the X300, T400, X200 etc. - those 2008 models were the real first ones were only the ThinkPad and Lenovo logos were featured. They also featured the Lenovo logo on the outer lid for the first time. Another point: You cite the ThinkWiki, but the dates provided in the ThinkWiki only refer to the announcement date. The X41 was the last model that was announced before the Lenovo acquisition was complete - but the X41 Tablet followed so quickly after the acquisition that it was pretty much also 100 % developed under IBM. Heck, even the T60 was probably mostly developed by IBM, as ThinkPads typically have a 2 year development cycle. So the development of the T60 (which was announced in 2006) began in 2004, long before the Lenovo acquisition was completed. I like your video for the effort and the topic though. The question is interesting. All of the ThinkPads released after the X41 are Lenovo ThinkPads, but their design was clearly still almost completely from IBM. I think the best way to refer to the 2005 to 2008 ThinkPads is "Lenovo/IBM ThinkPads", because this was clearly a period of transition. The first 100 % complete Lenovo ThinkPad was the ThinkPad X300.

It's funny, in the past 20 years I purchased almost exclusively X series models including an X20, X60t, X220t, X300, X301, and x120e. Where I diverge from this is that I own two W series models, a W510 and W520.

Nice video! Unfortunately this subject will always be a debate, even T4x and X4x models which were developed under IBM, later production dates have Lenovo's trademark at the bottom of the machines.

Thanks man I really appreciate it! I’ve gotten all my ThinkPads used on eBay. You just need to keep an eye out and look for ones in good condition with the parts you want. A lot of the time it’s worth getting parts or repair laptops with no drives and throwing your own SSD in, just make sure everything else is okay besides requiring the parts you are going to provide.

Your information about the R61, T61 and Z61 being the first year that was fully 100% Lenovo is not accurate. Under the deal, IBM badging could be ordered as a option on those certain model for up to 2 additional years. So basically if you wanted the IBM badge, you had to special order those laptops to get that specific badging at an extra cost option. Those years were 2005-2007. I know this because i own a 2007 IBM branded R61i. I bought it from the original owner and he disclosed to me that he special ordered the laptop with the extra cost option giving him the IBM badging because he was a die-hard IBM buyer.

I would probably still use an X61 if it had a better screen. Even the low resolution would not bothet me, but those awful colours and viewing angles just put me off. Their screens are the major let down for those otherwise amazing machines.

I have a T60 with the cheapest 1024*768 LCD. It's not as good as an IPS one, but its colours and viewing angles are still quite a bit better than other cheap 1366*768 glossy LCDs.

The X61 tablet uses an AFFS display with similar results to an IPS panel, great colours and viewing angles but not great outdoors. I own the 1024x768 model and love it, but a 1400x1050 model does exist if you can find it!
