The Last Highland Tiger

Ғылым және технология

This is a Documentary about the Scottish wildcat. Fabled for their ferocity and often referred to as Highland tigers, due to its un-tamable nature. This majestic cat is in trouble, now rarer then the Bengal tiger its in need of our help. Outnumbered by feral cats, which compete for food and space; they also will hybridise with the pure breeds, watering away the wildcat gene. Scientists estimate that there may be fewer than 50 Scottish wildcats left in the wild, and only a handful that are genetically pure.
But there is hope.
A breeding program has been put in places all over the United Kingdom with new DNA technology may help identify the best and purest prospects for breeding. Through working with local landowners and been conserved by the actions of neutering, and habitat conservation, the wildcat
has a chance.

Just for clarity guys ...there is NO such thing as an "ACCIDENTAL KILL" by game keepers in Scotland. It is well known that Game keepers in Scotland and all over the UK think they are above the law ( and due to their boss's fraternal links within the secret societies in the UK usually are). Game keepers are also well known for killing other extremely rare predators such as the Hen Harrier. In these cases they normally poison their victims, but are snares and lethal traps are also common. There is no place in this world for Game shooting when it comes to conservation. If you really truly want to conserve the wilderness it needs to be done without allowing shooting for sport.

I don't think they're the most beautiful cat species. There are too many other gorgeous species, large and small. But I agree that the Scottish wildcat is mesmerizing. I love the white whiskers poking out of the white muzzle, the fierce, untameable countenance. It's too bad they can interbreed with house cats. That's the most likely _coup de grâce_ should they become functionally extinct. Unfortunately, we're going to lose a lot of charismatic species and the Scottish wildcat could be next.

Good to see some positive news regarding our only true Native Wild cat, saw one many years ago, no mistaking a true Wild Cat for a domestic cat. These old victorian practises of killing every predator that comes any where near a Grouse Moor or Pheasant shoot was supposed to stop, but it still goes on every thing from Weasels all the way up to the beautiful Native Golden Eagle and there have even been suspicious death's to the re-introduced Sea Eagles, All this so some rich people most of whom don't even live in the Country let alone the area, can get a good day,s sport killing a few grouse or pheasant, and to hell with Wild Cats, Foxes, Hawks and Eagles. They are seen as vermin that must be eradicated by shooting or illegal trap's and poison, which both result in a slow and painful death. They banned fox hunting but still allow these barbaric practices to continue. Burning hundreds of square miles of moorland so nothing can grow higher than a man's knee, no chance for nature to regenerate, all this for the privileged few. in a world where so many animals are clinging on for there very survival, while the Human population grows leaving fewer wild places. The Caledonian national park and other places could be restored to their former glory and protected the animals would come back. Then these land owners could build lodges for people to come and visit true pristine animal wilderness with hiking trails guided tours( there would be plenty of jobs for the local communities and the ex Game keepers could be the new park rangers, could work?, would work if people could change the way they manage the land for the few .

I looked to see what my dog was looking at and when I bent down to look in the trees that cat was staring at me the markings on the face and whiskers. As I walked away I turned back and the cat crossed over to the other trees and it was its tail when I realized it was different, my first thought it had a tail like a racoon the thick black rings and the tail was blunt . Last year while driving to our cabin, me, my father and his brother spotted a wild cat near the road. (In North Macedonia) I've never seen one, so we stopped. Its tail attracted the most attention and it is bigger and stouter than a domesticated one. And, although we were like 200m away it acted so cautious and was so evasive it start running to hide. My uncle then said : "If we only had a gun now..." . I said: "Are you kidding me? Why would you shoot it ??? It is an endangered species and It can no way cause you any harm. It is even good for the ecosystem." "It is a cat and it is of no use like any cat." - my uncle replied... From that day on I lost the respect for him, because I never thought he was such an uneducated, stupid and ignorant jerk. Fuck you uncle.

What makes you think their killing is accidental? As in the case of raptor killings in and around Grouse moors there IMO is nothing accidental about it. It has passed the point where gamekeepers are being prosecuted for these killings and also the Estate owners should be in court.

Wonderful animals. I saw one last year (North Macedonia). They are not endangered there , though their numbers decreases through hunting, foresting etc. The endangered one in NM is the Balkan Lynx (which is the national symbol of North Macedonia and you can find its picture on their coin of 5 denars), also wonderful animal, there are only around 30 left :(.

That' sad 😟 But you said they weren't endangered? If there are only 30 of them left, then they are. In fact, they are on the brink of extinction! I hope your government is willing to do something about it and will put a conservation program in place that will save them.

I think The father of my cat is feral. My cat looks very similar to the Scottish wild cat only differences is the stocky build and the fluffy fur. my cat has all the 5 rings on the tail the aggressive behaviour prey drive. His wieght is roughly 8kgs he won't think twice about attacking a human or my xl american bully the cat Is very territorial..... he could just be a serious aggressive "tabby" and not a relation to a wild cat. But I'm based in Hampshire

You may have a hybrid or a feral cat in your garden. If you do have a genuine wildcat (which I doubt as they try their best to stay well away from humans) then the kindest thing you could do for it is to leave well alone.

A question for the Scottish wildcat Trust. It's a two part question firstly, how much of an area does each wildcat need to survive, I know the areas of male and female cats vary in size surly if these cats are given the space to move about freely and without persecution won't they bounce back keeping the true bloodline. Second these ferrel wildcats won't they over time evolve into a subspecies of wild scothish cat. As cats have evolved over the millieanna, and why are pesticides still used in forested areas dreamed as wildlife sanctuaries, surely if Government and private land owners truly want these beautiful cats not only to survive but trive by usage of corridors through Government and privately owned land then in a short period of time these cats won't need human help this in my opinion would be a dream come true

So my cat comes back in some right states .. it makes us not want to let him out.. I noticed this cats tail who we know hes fighting never raises and the mofos Hench af.. I've been feeding my cat up so much so he can try and defend himself a bit better.. anyway I've only just put 2 and 2 together that this mofos actually a Scottish wildcat but he's domesticated the woman owns two but ones a female.. came here to confirm what I've saw.. I have one question: am I putting my cats life in danger letting him go out and fight with this wildcat?.. not that I'm letting him out to go fight but you know what I meant..
