Because it is not. In fact, the gameplay is pretty average; It got nothing on blasphemous 2. The only thing that keeps me interested is the art and monster design.

It barely talks about the game design in general. Doesn't even talk about the progression system whatsoever. I came out of this video still not really knowing much about the game and what makes it stand out. I mean, I had this game on my Wishlist already, so didn't really need to be sold on it, but still, as a review, this one was fairly shallow and definitely doesn't quite back up the video title.

That has a lot to do with the enjoyment of the genre, but I really liked how this game teaches you how to manage its difficulty to prepare you for the challenge.

@V-vision got you. IGN review ripped this game apart. I'm not big on reviews per seh but I'll see how the finished product is. I backed the game years ago, so I have some goodies coming to me when the game releases physically next year. I've played the demo in the summertime and I didn't like it. Played it on the steam deck. Didn't like hiw the graphics look, how everything was small, the jumping was weird an way off and the gameplay and fighting mechanics was below mediocre to me. The dem was bad. I only hope the finish game is better. The demo left a bad taste in my mouth. So much stuff was off. They also screwed up my digital switch code. They say I have to wait on it smh.

@@redcrimson1028 Yeah, I hear you on reviews and I can definitely see why a bad demo would leave you with a bad taste in your mouth and adding a messed up digital code on that is a tough pill to swallow. I'm surprised you have to wait for it, I would have thought once they know about an issue, getting someone a working digital code would be an easy fix

Soo do you die instantly when you hit a spike or fall? I had to put blasmphemous 1 down for that sole reason. Doesnt work for me in these type of games

Try out the new Prince of Persia. You don't die from spikes unless your health is really low and they have custom difficulty. Very good balance of platforming, puzzles and combat. Story is straight forward, not too many cutscenes and characters grow on you.

neither blasphemous game has got anything on the last faith. One of my all time favourite games for sure. such beautiful art, incredibly satisfying combat with an extremely unique set of weapons, amazing enemy and monster design, great level design too. The only thing i feel that may be amiss would be the game's story. I feel like it was complicated just for the sake of being complicated to fit in with the dark souls / bloodborne-esque approach. Other than that, almost a perfect game.

Can you explain again how this is a new standard? From what I'm hearing it's due to it being a very well-polished MV. Well, we already have those. I wish all MV were, but it certainly isn't the first.

It's not. For being delayed over and over again it should have been amazing. It's not better than what's come before it.

Excellent game! I got the Switch version and the performance issues were mostly solved with the patch. I'm at 40% completion. It took me a good 7 hours to really get hooked, but I'm right there! Best Metroidvania since Castlevania : Order of Ecclesia (at my own taste). As good as the Blasphemous series is, I prefer The Last Faith for its visuals and atmosphere. Plus, the whip is most welcome! It could be called Castlevania "something". Any non-linear Castlevania fan will plow through The Last Faith with great enthusiasm. Also, no hand-holding! Where you should go is always unclear, but that's by design. There will be useless bactracking in the first playthrough, but usually, these games are better after beating it and restarting. Totally recommended. I get the reviewers who gave it a "7" or below, but I feel it's a matter of taste. Been playing Castlevania since the end of the 80's. The Last Faith delivers in spades! Soulsvania is an even better moniker for this one. Get it if you're into Metroidvanias! Hopefully a sequel will happen in the future. It's very engaging.

Switch though? I put 300 hours into monster hunter rise on switch and bought it again for PS5 because I got sick of 5 hour loading screens, textures like a 5 year old fell over in water colors and a choppy 30 fps. It's beyond me why people tolerate switch in 2024 or the end of 2023 whenever this was wrote.

Picking your starting class means nothing. Just stats. All classes start with the same thing. You would think the melee would have a big weapon, the wizard would have a spell and the gun class would have a gun but no.

Neat, we got 2 Blasphemous games this year

This review baffles me, there's nothing this game does that "redefines metroidvanias". I've played for a few hours and I already have a fair amount of complaints. Like you start with the same dex scaling weapon no matter what class you pick at the start, so unless you pick rogue you're basically nerfing yourself for the beginning. There's a huge lack of i-frames for the dodge as well as an unnecessarily long cooldown for it which just makes the game less fun to play and goes against your instincts of how to play soulslikes. Your healing doesn't replenish when you die other than 4 if you run out so you need to farm heals if you want more than that, farming heals sucked in Bloodborne and it sucks here too. Boss rooms don't have bonfires after you kill them so you either have to backtrack to level up or risk going forward with low health. I really don't trust your reviews at all anymore, you guys gave my favourite metroidvania of the year a 6.5/10 but this gets a 9.5? It's ridiculous

Chill dude. It’s good to have opinions though so maybe you’ll help someone else. I personally had an amazing time playing this game. In my line of work, you play a lot of games. This one immediately had me playing late into the night and oftentimes I thought about it when I wasn’t playing. That’s rare for me. You can cry and complain about the game and my score all you want, but the bottom line is, I had hella fun. And it’s okay that our opinions differ, but like be chill about it. We’re not attacking each other.

Apparently my response was hidden from public view lmao, so here it is again: So you admit that it's personal bias and not an objective review. You neglected to mention any of the issues the game has at all and talk about it like it's god's gift to metroivanias. Giving it a 9.5 is putting on the same level as Elden Ring, but I have yet to see anything this game does that's original at all or brilliant in design. I don't think the game is terrible, but imo it's hard carried by it's visuals and sound design and not the gameplay or level design. Also you say "we're not attacking each other" but also tell me I'm crying when I'm literally just stating facts? Nice one. As a reviewer you have a responsibility to be objective and not just "fan boy" about it because you happened to like it a lot. People spend money based on what you say, but this game definitely isn't for everyone, and personally after about 10 hours of it now I'm still not enjoying it.

I really wonder how much the staying power of this game will actually be? We've had amazing Metroidvania games in recent memory that all just faded into obscurity.

I haven't played it myself yet, so i can't confirm or deny anything but metroidvanias usually work their magic when you are a few hours in and you start to really explore and uncover secrets, get some abilities, etc.

I love the game wish I had of brought it for the PS5 or on Steam cause the Switch (Where I buy all my metroidVania games) versions has had some performance issues when it's a lot of stuff going on at once. Other than that I love this game so far and plan to play through it more than once.

Have to admitt this is amazing and my game of the year i take back my comment before.

interesting, the reviews on steam are quite mixed (with some very in-depth negative ones), but all the reviews on youtube seem to be gushing over how good the game is. Definitely not buying it at launch, but I might give it a shot eventually.

The entire review I was waiting for a comparison with Blasphemous - not that games need to be put against each other to “prove their value”, but the similarities here are very evident. It’s also unclear to me what sets this game apart from other metroidvanias of the last decade.

My take is that it's a recipe we know but the ingredients are a bit different than the other Metroidvanias. Still, it's extremely reminiscent of many other games that came before. Blasphemous is more colorful and has more variety in its visuals, making The Last Faith feel more "specific". For example : Dead Space Remake Vs RE4 Remake. Dead Space is more homogeneous in its visuals than RE4, but both are excellent in terms of visual design. I love Blasphemous, but I prefer The Last Faith. The contrary will also be true for other people. It's a matter of taste. If you like gloomy games, this one is superb in this regard. It feels like its own thing, even though it's like Castlevania and Bloodborne. Nothing really new here, but still feels fresh. If it rings positive for you, you won't regret it. It's a challenging game, no doubt, but it doesn't feel too hard for its own good (like Souldiers, OMG!).

Always have to confirm for myself but I’m glad this game is getting rave reviews. Can’t wait to get home to play it. Love the gothic art style and music in these games.

Castlevania SotN is one of the all time greats, my only issue with it is it's wwaayy too easy. I've always wanted a metroidvania with soulsbourne difficulty.

Your review intrigues me. I´m a little tired of the genre, but I think I should give the game a chance, when I find the time. However, I very much doubt it will top Afterimage as my favorite Metroidvania this year. I agree with you that the story of that game wasn´t good, but exploration, scale and Artdesign are of an exceptional level, rivaling and sometimes surpassing Hollow Knight. It´s a real shame that game flew under people´s radars, this game is more than a little appetizer for Silksong, it feels like the real deal!

@@x-Bsyde-xYou´re right, of course. But at least to me, Afterimage uses its huge scale to create an extremely varied world with great level design. The wonder of exploration ist extremely strong in that game. It took me over 30 hours to beat that game and even then I was sad that it was over. It has its flaws, yes, but exploring is so strong that I wasn´t bored even one second. I liked the game way more than the shorter and more compact Blasphemous 2. So in this case, I would say, yes, the huge scale is nessesary for the experience.

Give me a break with this review...new standard my ass!

Or you can think about your build ahead of time and plan accordingly? Or you can have several playthroughs going at once? This isn't the crippling thing you make it out to be. Sounds like you are from the ADHD generation and need your meds.

He died a few times: “I never felt my skills as a player were to blame.” So then was it the games fault? No. I think means the deaths were fair, not cheap, and I always knew or figured out how to beat an encounter. Not doing this is the players fault though, yea? Just want to make sure I understand. "Unfair" difficulty has always just been a skill issue. There's two types of players. Bad players who will call the game game "unfair" rather than git gud. And good players that will blame themselves if they're not good enough and go on a training arc in the mountains to come back and dominate the game.

the majority of the reviewers who have received a code from the developers, all compare TLF directly to SoTN while very carefully tiptoeing around bringing up blasphemous at all despite the similarities to blasphemous being visually uncanny, TLF and blasphemous are hardly distinguishable, yet TLF and SoTN look nothing alike. blasphemous was heavily inspired by SoTN, but when it came out it was 100% obvious it was its own game- thanks to its extremely strong art direction. TLF's art direction is bloodborne assets done in blasphemous' medium. the fact most reviewers of this game who were given a code ignore the similarities to blasphemous and instead really push the castlevania similarities honestly makes the reviews seem... guided. to say the least. so what feels copied from blasphemous so far? -silhouette flash when killing a boss -wall climb animation - flask breaking animation - ui and specifically the frames items are displayed in - animation for enemies spawning in challenge rooms - item pickup sprite (orb on fire) - texture and animation of crumbling platforms thats what ive picked up on so far.

Looks like Blasphemous in a different setting, with a bit more flexibility in combat.

I dig metroidvanias. Recently I’ve played through Grime, Salt & Sanctuary, Death’s Gambit and Afterimage, all of which I like a lot. This game looks like Blasphemous, which I’m not a fan of (it feels clunky to play). This worries me lol. Like, this game has an uncanny resemblance to Blasphemous. I might pick it up, this review is pretty persuasive, but…I’m not sure. Thank you for the review!

I prefer this one than blasphemous imo, maybe because i dont really like the theme of blasphemous but both games are great, but this one is more into the "soulslike" since it got attributes build, pick a starting classes and weapon scaling, also whats not to love about a dark, gothic and vampiric kind of setting lol Next year we also got a side scrolling soulslike too called mandragora, that looks hella awesome!

What a strange review. The mere fact the game doesnt even have controls rebinding or any video options AT ALL automatically should mean its nowhere near a 9/10 score. How can you release a game in 2023 without such basic features? The game itself is nowhere near the top of metroidvania genre either, and its definitely not setting any new "standards" lol, this is as much "we have Blasphemous at home" as you can get What happened to game reviewers thse days? Did you guys get paid to put out this review or? Since you didnt even TRY to justify your clickbait title, or justify why this (of all games lol in such saturated genre these days) supposedly does anything outstanding or bar-raising.

While I think the title is clickbaity I do think setting new standards is impossible for metroidvanias. Hollow Knight was the thing to beat and even then its just a derivative of souls likes and castlevania. This game does what slot of new metroidvanias fail to do which is weapon variety and they seem to be going the symphony of the night route with alot of.customization for your build. I'm not saying this game is perfect its a solid 8 for me. It was less enjoyable than blasphemous 1 but better than blasphemous 2 imo.

Look, if you want to build your channel of game reviews off of click baity titles and get all the clicks you're looking at a short lifespan of your channel because everyone is going to notice that your titles don't match the actual content. This started as a 9/10 for me initially but ovetime ....the extremely clunky controls, very noticeable command input delay, bugs, softlocks if you go somewhere without air dash leading to jumping off a cliff the only way to escape ( lost 40 k souls) ,e nemies wait for you to climb at ledges and hit you outside your field on vision led me to 6.5-7/10 after finishing ir

As an mv veteran, I'd say its superior to Blasphemous 2

I find it hilarious that your review scores are really beyond the general consensus. 9.5 calling it a game that is the new standard for Metroidvania when most other reviewers found the game subpar and lacking. But hey, since that Spider-Man 2 review score and your lackluster video about that I know that your scores can’t be taken seriously. You really should stay off metacritic. Leave it to the professionals without confusing gamers.

@@NoisyPixelNews “All of this”? That took me like a minute or two. There aren’t many games I could’ve played in that time. But I guess that’s the amount of time you play games you make a review of. To think that you ignore valid criticism and simply come up with the defense “someone else’s opinion” as a site who claims to do professional reviews is mind boggling. If you think that your reviews are nothing more than opinions, then don’t give them scores and don’t post scores on metacritic. If all of your reviews are simply an opinion, then they are exactly that, an opinion, not a professional review. Might as well post your opinions in the user reviews where they belong. You don’t seem to be able to grasp the difference between someone like me having an opinion on a game I played and someone like you who does it for a living, as in professionally. Gaming journalist is a real job and you’re doing it a disservice by doing opinion pieces that aren’t well researched, hiding behind the age old and untrue “it’s just an opinion” excuse. Read gamestar or gamepro and take a look how professional gaming journalists work. You don’t even have to read a magazine, Digital Foundry only does tech reviews but they did a better job on Spider-Man 2 than you and they didn’t even give it a score. If you continue to stand on your point that all of your so called reviews are just an opinion, then don’t call yourself professional game journalists and don’t give games a score, period.

See, if this is how you conduct yourself, belittling anyone who is criticizing your reviews, not reading their comments and writing things like “lol” you shouldn’t call yourself a professional and give out scores as you’re behaving like a reddit troll and nothing more. Contrary to what you write on your page when you say that “We aim to cover video games, not to publically shame or belittle any groups of people. Our platform supports free speech, but we draw the line at hateful or hurtful statements.” you apparently have no issue with belittling anyone who criticizes you.

Everything is good except the switch version is ass and the fact you have to upgrade strength in order to get better frost resistance is kind of dumb. Other than that I love the game

Um it's pretty mediocre honestly. Way to much delay on attacking. Blasphemous 2 this is not

Blasphemous 2 is a rushed, shitty sequel

If they would just stop making everything like demon souls and just making original game. Just think symphony of the night was not a soul's clone and it was beautiful and one of the best games of all the time. Now everybody has to follow the demon souls mold which makes games like this so frustrating you want to snap your controller in half.

I love souls. I love metroidvanias. I play them all the time. This game is mid at best. It’s really slow and clunky. It’s like you’re playing bloodborne enemies but your character is from ds1. Decent game but I really wish I had waited for it to go on sale. 5/10.

Nah. This game is a 6 maybe a 7 at the most. The only new standard this game sets is in it's art design.

not even close to Castlevania. this looks normal and generic game the stages looks repetitive scenery. look at castlevania sotn, it has unique atmosphere, weapons, lvl etc.

I agreed with this review! this game is so good and challenging! but with your own skills and play style. Sometimes you don't have to kills every enemies, just move fast and go lol IGN did bad at review! 😅😊

Bloodphemous, blasphevania…. That’s it, I am out of genre names.

Getting really tired to these souls-like Metroidvanias. These days they sort of feel like they are a dime a dozen. Aside from that, I don't think this was great review as it didn't get into what made the game stand out, how the combat works, no clips from the music when the review talks about the music, etc. From what I can see, the combat just looks slow and clunky and it doesn't look like you really have any sort of verticality to your attacks. Can you even jump and attack? According to Steam user reviews, no you can't. That sounds awful. I fully believe that the reviewer liked this but it didn't tell me why I might like it.

I wouldn't say a new standard.... lol It has its flaws

I love when all the experts come out and give their feedback. They did it with Lords of the Fallen, Elden Ring, Cyberpunk etc and they are all excellent games. People should just shut up and play games. Not that serious

It's not about that. The fact is that there are definitely games that now define this genre and this game comes no where close to the genre defining games. It's probably a pretty good game but when someone just starts saying things like genre defining, it brings into question what exactly is genre defining about it?@@gporr7004

This is a shallow and bland review. More a paid advertisement than a proper analysis. and btw, this game is a Blasphemous clone.

In order to raise the bar for the metroidvania genre, you have to make a better game than Hollow Knight. That's just a fact at this point. To say that this game, while good, takes the genre to new heights is just not correct. Out of all the MVs in existence so far, nothing has come even close to Hollow Knight. For there to be a new standard, it must surpass the current holder of the title. Right?

I think Hollow Knight, although technically a Metroidvania, is way too fast to hit that Castlevania itch. Maybe that’s just me, but while I played Hollow Knight, I never felt like I was playing a metroidvania, it just felt like I was playing a 2D action platformer. - Azario

9.5 is insane. I feel like he must not have played the last half of the game. This is a solid 7 maybe an 8 if you're being generous.

Such hyperbolic language is not helpful in game reviews. I mean, it's good, but jesus.

i despise any pixel art game. this is already 2023 and yet developer do not want to use cartoon based / anime based and instead making a shortcut to just buy a license for a pixel art engine rather than developing their own engine just like RE engine for example.

I think the action systems aren’t comparable. Hollow Knight can be pretty fast at times, this game is a bit slower. Also the verticality of Hollow Knight’s level design is a bit more grand.

@@spacecase88 Hollow Knight is a joke of a game. Feels like it's so many people's first game in the genre, so they freak out about it. It has so many design flaws that only grow all the more obvious as the game enters its final stages. Hell, its difficulty (that it is known for) is either from players not understanding basic mechanics, or is all in the post-game, and is merely a series of respect checks overall.

@@Nersius I feel like you are trying to lump me into this category of HK is the first MV that I've played. I played Super Metroid when that shit was new. Symphony of the Knight was one of my favorite games for most of my life. If you truly believe Hollow Knight is a 'joke of a game' give me some real evidence and I might consider your point of view. Tell me one thing that is a 'joke' about its game design.

@@spacecase88 For platforming, a visual or audio cue will denote you as safe (sword cling or wings sprout), yet you'll still die to the obstacle you just avoided. Everything is a greyscale wash, which works on most parts, but the Palace Platforming has safe and unsafe surfaces blended into one another. This can also be seen in the post-game horde challenge/prince charming fights where the adds all look incredibly similar to you, so it's easy to lose your character.

New standard in your dreams. This clunky mess is not any new standard for metroidvanias. This is just another soulsvania.
