'The Last Dance' tackled Jordan's off-the-court issues - Chris Broussard | NBA | FIRST THINGS FIRST

Спорт

Nick Wright and Kevin Wildes are joined by Chris Broussard to talk about last night's episodes of the Michael Jordan documentary 'The Last Dance'. Broussard was happy to hear Jordan address some off-the-court issues, like his personal relationship with Isiah Thomas, the formation of the Dream Team, and his struggle with the media's depiction of his gambling. Nick talks the New York Knicks, and says that the documentary reminded him that outside of Patrick Ewing, the Knicks were not as strong team as many seems to remember. Plus, Kevin fires off his top takes from watching the documentary in a 60 second speed round.

“Why did the heat not win 4 straight titles” Well the 1st season they played through Wade & and saw that was a mistake not to mention they were trying to get 3 guys who were #1 options for almost a decade on their teams to figure out how to play together lol. The 4th season Wades knee had gotten so bad he almost retired in ‘13 and by the ‘14 Finals it was so bad he could only put up 15.2 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 2.6 APG & shot just 43% shooting and played bad defense. Usually great teams that make 3 or more Finals HAVE 3-4 HOFers for a REASON lol. In the ‘90s it was only single & duos great players on a team and the Bulls clearly had the best duo (& had the best #3 option most of the time with Horace/Rodman…more so Horace though). Lotta people don’t know the Bulls had MJ/Pip/Horace all finish top 16 in PER in ‘92……the Heats big 3 never all 3 finished in the top 20 in PER any season. The only season of Horaces prime he was at least the #2 option he was ALl Defense and an All Star. He was a top 20 player from ‘92-‘95 …the fats back it up. Go look at all his advanced metrics those seasons. There’s a reason after the Bulls lost in ‘95 MJ himself said “we are a Horace Grant away”….💁

The Knicks point was a little excessive but the second one was on point. I came away with respect for Kobe and LeBron for doing it for 20 and 17 years straight respectively. The scrutiny, the fame, and the spotlight in a time of social media in addition to a 24-Hour news cycle didn’t drive them crazy-much respect.

Troy Duffie I agree but it’s you also have to take into account how much has changed since that period. Jordan may have not been able to take the criticisms and social media spotlight that Kobe and Lebron had to deal with. But you also have to consider that players in the league have so much more help dealing with this stuff. Magic, Jordan, Bird, ect basically had an agent, their family, and coaches giving them advise. Now guys like Lebron, Zion, ect have management teams, finance teams, media teams watching and guiding their every move. It’s definitely a different world now.

Look at all the football and basketball players that went broke in 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s. For Jordan to be on top means that the competition had to be on bottom. They didn't superteam like LeBron did so each team had 1 to 2 stars. Knicks went to finals after Bulls. Magic didn't get a 6th ring because of Jordan. Two time defending champion Pistons got swept. Phoenix with MVP Barkley lost. Seattle crew with the Glove and The Reign man was defeated. Pacers - not that time. The Jazz defeated twice in the finals. No Finals went to past 6 games. The Bulls were dominant thus that is why you think they faced weak competiiton.

Jordan needed Phil and Tex triangle offense to be successful as he’s yet to smell a finals without Phil Jackson!! Jordan needed a system to thrive, lebron is the system!! The only player to win without a great coach!! Lakers had a team full of all stars and didn’t reach the finals until Phil Jackson came!! The 2004 Detroit Pistons had no hall of Famers just a great coach and beat a team full of hall of famers!! Players score points but it’s the gm and coach who wins championships!!
