Videography by Matt Ward at www.visualsofscotland.co.uk
Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Excellent stuff as ever, Bruce. Some Scottish folk might disagree with an Englishman, but my view is that the working classes of both Scotland and England have been treated like crap over the centuries. We only have what we have now because people have fought for it.

How it grieves me, Mr. Fummey, that this is happening today. I, too, see this as the way things are trending, and fear that the last beheading on British soil will soon not be the LAST beheading on British soil. Because the powerful think that "rights" are what the strong give to the weak, and if they are opposed, they often feel that bloody constraint is what must follows. The trend you speak of is happening across the ocean, as well. Because the powerful are the same everywhere.

In the 1980s I was a young conservative. I cheered when the miners were defeated. In the last month, at age 57, I've become a union rep fighting for safety and equality in my workplace. My mind was slowly changed by personal experience, by the news and by historians telling the stories of the past. We must believe minds can be changed and allow space for that to happen. Thanks Bruce.

There is also thoughtcrime coined by George Orwell in his book 1984, but it is now an actual crime in the UK 7th March 2023. Clause 11 (formerly Clause 9 then Clause 10) of the Public Order Bill could criminalise any form of “influence” outside of abortion facilities - including in the form of silent prayer. Whether or not, you agree to use it in the case of abortion facilities, it does open the door for its use elsewhere!

Recently 3 men who had been arrested and convicted for a plot to kidnap the Governor of Michigan had their convictions overturned because it was discovered that more than 20 FBI agents did all the planning, purchasing and recruiting, illegally entrapping 3 men that they had duped into a scheme they would not have thought up on their own.

Watching this world were you could vote and suddenly have an elected dictator. With freedoms and people jailed for having different political views. Democracy is a fragile thing. It dose not stay like that. Its threatened by others who want power. Let's hope people will wake up to that threat. Not just in nations over seas. But also at home. With even our own wee parliament now being questioned by some and others. Thanks again Bruce. For making people think. If nothing else it wakes people up and ti think how close we and others are to losing our own freedom. To a dictator in waiting.

Thank you, I always find myself totally focused on you after hearing, "let me tell you a story." This was a great piece of history you shared with us today, and yes, relevant more than ever. The messed up thing is that history has all the answers we need! Now, I'm going re-watch your "Greatest Hero of Scotland," video! You're my favorite storyteller!

When I saw that people at "Speaker's Corner" in Hyde park, the birthplace of the term, getting on one's soapbox, were being arrested for.....well, speaking, I knew things were getting bad. Free speech is under attack. We need to be more tolerant of what others say. We must allow everyone to have their say, even if we think it is crazy and hurtful. We just have to have the guts to say, "hey, that's crazy and hurtful!" But have to follow up with why we think so. We have to be willing to get on our own soapbox and voice our own opinions and let the people decide. Thanks for continuing to do so!

This is not just a warning for the people in Scotland. Over the pond here in the US we are fighting to keep out democracy. The Bread and Circuses the media offer keep lots of people in their places, but I'm hopeful because channels like this exist and facts are being presented to inform us of the dangers. If you don't know where you came from, you won't know where you are headed.

I blame the start of this disfranchising of worker's rights to Thatcherism in the UK & Regan in the US. The resent arrest of Greta Thunberg, on trumped-up charges, highlights the slipper road the UK is on. A 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 living in 🇮🇪

Yeah, they made sure that land owners who produced grain didn't miss out on their money, just like the compensation after slavery was ended in the US went to the slave _owners,_ not the slaves themselves. It's called capitalism.

Wow. I wish every history teacher would make history as personal and immediate as you. I can't think of more than a handful of the people I know who see themselves as part of the ongoing history of us, or ask themselves important questions such as 'how bad could this be' and 'is this forward or backward". You could write a bestselling book, but it would be far more effective to have a Netflix or Amazon series, with the promotion your messages need. There's a difference between learning history and learning to participate in History because you can use the lessons our past can teach everyone. Each day I feel we're further from being able to recover the progress someone else paid so dearly to accomplish. Thanks.

Another incredible history that absolutely deserves to be remembered. Things are no less moving backwards across the pond as well. You are not alone in the concerns you summarized with. Thank you for producing quality content always. Unrelated topic that sprung from your video… you drove by a great mural. Which made me curious? As an artist and a commissioner for the arts in my community, I find that I’m always interested in street art. We have many gorgeous ones locally as well. They all have meaning. Some historical, some depict modern relative issues, some to highlight an amazing event or person (s). My questions are… do you have many murals in Scotland? If so, are there intersting stories about Scotland represented in those artworks? What are they? I’d love to know! My daughter is in the middle of a semester at the University of Edinburgh. Shortly to take a weeks break and travel about. I think I will charge her with the task of showing momma some more art! I’ve seen some cute things from right around the dorms already. Thanks for reading my queries. Have a brilliant day! 🖤
