the ship was operated by Hyundai Glovis, built by Hyundai Mipo. subsidiary of Hyundai auto, South Korean car manufacture. south Korean ships have tendency to capsize easily for some reason. MV Sewol sank similar fashion killing almost 300 students. the captain of the ship survived everyone else sank with the ship. new standard for the lowest professionalism

That ending was genius. Well played. I work in shipping (with car carriers, as it happens), so it’s always fun to see such an overlooked vessel type get some attention - even if it could have been for less unfortunate reasons.

Wow, this is a truly fascinating case! It seems we have a case of shipboard incompetence, that borders on being a case of deceptive practices. This results in a case commercial transportation becaming a navigational and environmental hazard. This triggers an environmental protection and containment response operation of huge proportions. The case then became a logistical exercise. The goal of which is to balance and coordinate an environmental cleanup operation against one of the largest salvage projects on record. The video documentation of this whole process then becomes a KZread post, that spawns a viewer comment. This commentor interprets and describes the entire event as merely a medical case. Simply an acute case of severe conjunctivitis. So severe however, that it took two years to clear up. Worse than that though. It has now metastasized into what is being described as a case of erectile dysfunction of huge proportion and consequence.

I looked forward every day to Andy's reports. He was even out at night capturing the chain breaking through the hull. I will never forget the fire on May 13th. Excellent video of the whole process!

Dude. Your channel came out of nowhere and instantly became one of my favorites, just from how you explain all these topics in an interesting and fun way, but this video with the puns and that song bit at the end just sealed the deal. You're fricken awesome. Keep it up!

The narrator’s puns are awesome

"that's a lot of damage" while showing the ship cut in half, loved that reference!

Remindes me of the time my father who was working at a shipyard was asked how deep a Submarine they were building could dive. The answer is "As deep as the sea is at that point, but only once" The rest is classified.

This was by far one of the best scripts, had me chuckling every couple minutes, and I’m still laughing after that remix at the end.

I live on the north end of St. Simons Island and know the harbor pilot very well. He's a great guy and is 100% not to blame. There is an audio recording from the bridge as the ship capsized. It's harrowing to listen to. But it's great not having to look at that ship anymore. If you walk the beach on St simons Island, you can still find car parts that have washed ashore.

Yea I was at SSI on the lighthouse the literally day before the ship capsized, I have a photo looking out where the ship layed over when it was clear. Kinda crazy to think in a short time it went from being perfect to having car parts everywhere.

Pretty darn good my friend! Very enjoyable. I spent 15 years on and off at sea. Our ship was only 470’ with two interior water tight doors. Our ship was ice rated and doubled hulled. We had a occupant load of 130 people and a captain and crew who ran a very tight ship. For certain those doors were monitored and controlled from the bridge. Massive alarm were sounded when the doors were opened and closed as anything caught in the movement of those doors would be destroyed. I was fortunate indeed to have experienced a life at sea and what it took to safely operate a vessel of only half the size which was described in this piece.

It's exactly what you'd think. The captain decided to not fill the ship's ballast tanks at the port because of the high seabed and tipped over on her first turn. This has happened before

Even if any of those cars looked perfect they still would have been scrapped - insurance would pay for them and if they were sold they would have been a liability.

I like your sense of humor. It's very organic where other channels feel forced.

I live where this happened. Brunswick, Georgia. To understand how big the VB 10,000 and the Salvage cranes at the port were is amazing. You would see them all the way across town. People still talk about it today. Its been almost a year since it was all removed. Was a pretty entertaining time with all the people coming to see it.

I live an hour and a half away and went down to Brunswick a couple times during the duration the vessel was there, saw it first like a week or 2 after it capsized and during the removal and it was massive and the equipment used to remove it was massive pretty cool how they eventually got it done and the technical aspect of how it got done

I lived on Saint Simon's Island for 20 years... the last couple of them, around the time of the Golden Ray's capsizing, the culture shifted around it and has remained engrained since. In fact, the shops on the pier off where the boat was capsized, vendors made products including the GR in their merch. With tag lines like "Ship happens", the Golden Ray will probably be in the Islands consciousness for a while 🤣🤣🤣

Aaaaaah, St Simon’s Island - now I get why the UNLOCODE for Brunswick is USSSI. Always was slightly curious.

I used to have a sign over my desk that said, “Why is there never enough time to do the job right the first time but always enough time to do it over?” This is probably the biggest example I have seen. However, you might’ve been right about the automation being to blame. It seems strange to me that the system wasn’t designed to just check the ballast levels automatically and send some kind of huge alarm out if things were not right. I mean all the parts were in place. Why didn’t it just do that automatically? It’s hard to say what happened, but I see a common problem. Companies will spend tons of money on fancy automated computer stuff and then try to do the training on the cheap. 🙄

There seems to be a fair amount of evidence of sabotage or at the very least, questions regarding it. When there is such seemingly gross incompetence and disregard of alarms, it can't help but raise the question

yeah I thought it was crazy when he said the wrong ballast levels were used. Even having an auto load feature isn't enough. You would think it would take reading automatically every so often. One less thing for human to screw up.

Hi, i've seen before pictures about the removing a ship like this in the bay of biscay, but not see the sawchain, only the shipcuts, it was impressive, but see it in action is great, well done :-) I thought too, it was a large wire with something especial to cut metal, it's surprising see an "simple" anchorage chain cutting a ship. Thanks for show us all this. And the chronography and numbers of all that accident.

I remember the day that this happened. I was on Saint Simons Island the day after and it was impossible to find any parking nearby to go get a look. Considering SSI is better than Tybee my wife and I go down there a few times a year since it's not that far. I'm going to miss that big hunk of metal in the channel. It sure was an interesting landmark for the last two years. Also, the sandy path of beach across the channel from SSI is where they filmed the coast scenes for The Walking Dead.

I am apart of the Civil Air Patrol Squadron in Savannah. I have flown over the ship a lot and have some cool areal footage. I remember when it sank and hearing about all of the fires that broke out. It’s amazing it took them 2 years to finally remove it.

CAP is a great program that offers great opportunities such as low cost to getting your pilots license and other careers that you can explore. I recommend joining your nearest squadron as a cadet if you are 12-18 or joining as a senior member of you are 18 or older. It’s a great nonprofit. I will make a post about it on my KZread channel

7ft per minute is actually incredibly quick to cut something. Speeds and feeds of many machines cannot do that. However the scale of it is the only reason it’s cutting that “slow”.

Fantastic narration in this video!

You don't mention it for some reason, but the cutting up of the ship and the salvage was done by SMIT, who do incredible work. They also did the same kind of job on the Tricolor in the English channel, and were the company that cut the bow off the Russian nuclear sub Kursk, and then recovered the sub.

@@smokie3248 Ya, originally it was SMIT, and they were starting the work, and it was going really well, but they provided a realistic timeframe and cost for the removal, and T&T said they could do it much faster and cheaper, so SMIT was replaced. And apparently T&T didn't do a very good job.

When I saw this video in my recommended I was like, "No, it couldn't be the same ship I heard about 2 years ago." I come to find that it is. I first heard about this from a coworker when he was driving along the Georgia coast on vacation. I was already amazed when he told me a car carrier had capsized, but what really got me was when he told me they were cutting it with a chain to remove it.

Really, dude, the jokes were pure "pun"ishment. 😉😄 The "I'm loving it" joke got me the most. On the serious side of it all, the person responsible for the disaster, bailing out of the country as soon as he could, is highly suspicious. If saving money was the reason that the incident ended up occurring, then that was the ultimate "fail."
