The Largest Burial Site in North America

Ойын-сауық

Covering more than 600 acres, 100,000 monuments and 1.5 million bodies, the four cemeteries on Mount Royal in Montreal make up the largest burial site in North America. Founded in the 1850s, the four adjoining cemeteries feature spectacular landscaping, historic 19th-century crypts, spooky urban legends and hundreds of notable figures, including Prime Ministers, business leaders, sports stars, artists, writers, poets, musicians, composers, filmmakers, inventors, mobsters, murderers and even Titanic victims.

My grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins are all buried there and my Uncle George who died in WWII is also buried in the Military side. Such a beautiful place to visit every time we’re in Montreal

I was born in Montreal General Hospital in 1961 and still live within 20 km of the city. It’s a beautiful city (apart from the constant road work) and has a great history. As a teen I the 1970s all my friends from Toronto always wanted to visit for the bars open til 3am the clubs and music and General night life 24hour food and great Hash ( Citrolli) from the Middle East. They couldn’t get that in TO. And Steamies on The Main and Smoked meat Bagels and black cherry sofa and of course Spruce Beer ( like Root beer but clear and made from spruce sap)

Seems very special to the hearts of some people, but I can’t help but to think that this was a waste of space for the mountain… there’s only 1 city with a bona fide mountain within its downtown! Imagine if the other side was full of trees or parks/life

  • @DiscoverMontréal

Well, it doesn’t cover the entire mountain, there’s still a 600 acre park on the eastern half! I understand what you mean though.

I don't know why it bugs me, but this is a PSA for anyone who doesn't know: When you're speaking english, you can just say Mount Royal. You don't have to say "royal" in some weird attempt to speak French that honestly just sounds dumb every single time. And same with mount. not, "mawhnt". It's not Mawhnt Roy, AL. 😁

  • @DiscoverMontréal

Haha tourists don’t know any better. They ask locals how it’s pronounced, they hear them pronounce it the French way and they try it in their best French accent. A for effort but yeah it sounds weird 🤣
