That is insane! When i went to Luang Prabang over 10 years ago you had to go by bus down the windiest sketchiest roads to get there. 2 hours? I remember it being over 7! Crazy how much has changed in a short time.

Hmmn, I am curious, when you say that Laos is in 'debt trap' to China, are you saying that your country or other Western countries or any global institutions like IMF and the World Bank will give interest-free / super low interest loans to poor countries like Laos with zero strings attached? Many other renowned economists have taken pains to point out the lies that western countries have smeared Chinese loans. I would suggest that perhaps you get some education and read more widely before throwing in misleading phrases like 'debt trap' to your vlogs. Be safe.

A bit of economics about this railroad which is owned and operated by the Laos-China Railway company or LCR. Laos and China have 30% and 70% equity respectively in LCR but only put in 40% of the $6B as startup funding into the company. The rest of 60% is borrowed money. So, Laos paid $0.72B, China paid $1.68B, banks lent $3.6B. The project needs to service this $3.6B debt through passenger ticket price and freight fees, plus food sales and concessions. Because it's a BOT project, LCR operates it for 50 years and then transfer it to the Laos government free of charge.

China transformed Laos from a landlocked country to become a landlinked country.
update from Thailand railway to link laos. there are two paraelled projects ongoing. existing metre gauge rail and high speed railway. For high speed railway. the 1st and 2nd maybe finished around 2030-2032 and metre gauge is expanding the capacity to transport more passenger and cargos
I'm hoping to go through all if not most of Southeast Asia. Your video is giving me some ideas.
Debt trap for future return....not debt trap for destruction like Ukraine.

Driving from Vientiane to Luang Prabang take more times, but the road pass through beautiful mountains and valleys too and you can stop along the way to see the countryside.

Very very good train
In geography textbook in our country, we were taught "Laos has no railway." Now, I don't know whether they have changed and edited the text or not. 😂
What a beautiful view for beer:30
Laos and China's leaders agree to construct high speed rail. Laos is a not a rich country and could not have this type of rail without a loan. Everyone needs a loan when they do not have enough money to construct such a project for the benefit of the people. You rode on this train and seemingly ungrateful and unthankful for the experience you gain. Have you ever taken out a loan for a car, house or tuition? And you call it a debt trap?
Awesome video 😊😊

Oh yeah, weird thing about some trains operating in Asia: Business class > First class > Second class
@tanyokechun4896
15 күн бұрын
First class looks like business class to me so many seats unlike Indonesia Whoosh seat style
Train prices and service standards in China: Business Class > First Class > Second Class First class is just a bit more comfortable seats and space. Business class has a separate passenger lounge, which may have smarter seats or semi-reclining seats depending on the model, free meals free water and snacks, and separate passenger lanes.
Hilarious that you automatically equal debt to "trap".
Laos pay 30% and 70% (this is Laos taking a low interest loan from China)
Sorry to break this to you, the first class tickets are usd24 each if you book thru their app 😢
❤❤❤❤
I would hope that because old LP is a UNESCO site that it won't be destroyed by overdevelopement like Vang Vieng was. Although Laos used to be slow travel, I feel it once had a rural charm that no longer exists. The other issue is Chinese dams controling water flow into Laos and Cambodia. I can't see how they will maintain their sovereignty given such hurdles.
Come on dude !! Be a bit braver !!! :) Get the second class !! Go for an adventure !! ah ahah a
But why would a ‘business class’ passengers were seemingly allowed to board the train almost exclusively, over first class, according to your video?
This high speed train is not a big deal, you should've checked out those trains in China if you ever have the chance.
Borrowing fund and being a debt trap are two different concepts.
Hope the voice this video sound better.,Thanks,
If you compare the videos of other Chinese high-speed rail stations, you will see that this Lao station meets the same standard, even newer and bigger. I don't know if it also incorporates the style of Lao architecture because it seems to have done more design work than many Chinese stations. When you mention the debt trap, I wonder if any country in the world would be willing to build a station of the same standard for Laos, with lower debt and lower price, with no political conditions attached, such as forcing the Lao government to accept Western political views?
ສະບາຍດີ 🖐️🖐️

The train is a Chinese CR200 model, which is very old and not fast, but there is definitely no smoking on the train. The train is electrically powered and a fire would be catastrophic. So you'll see a lot of smokers on the train platforms or in the smoking rooms before the train starts. All bullet trains in China are non-smoking, only fuel trains you can smoke in the carriages. They are called green trains in China. I haven't seen those very outdated trains for over a decade, even the countryside has been replaced with old cr200 models.
