    Imma go on the limb here and say that Kaladin, means Son of Eternity / Eternal Son Kalak plus Lin (assuming it's one of those exceptions and Lin is said as Din instead). how close was i?

    "Humans are the aliens" > "Minor spoiler warning" -- Those might've been in the wrong order, lol Great video tho! It's amazing that we can know so much about the languages of Roshar. I picked up one or two things while reading, but nothing near this deep. I think Brandon has picked a good level of linguistic understanding to build his languages at: not too deep to get lost in making them, but enough to not look "like a complete idiot" as he puts it.

    Nooooo you're right! That resulted from me switching paragraphs around but not rectifying that 😬 hopefully people just gloss over it. But thanks! I didn't pick most of this up while reading; it's almost all from searching through after and also combing through interviews with him and Peter Ahlstrom. And yeah Brandon's good at this! He has a lot of nice quotes on his philosophy which hopefully I'll bring up in the third part of the series.

    Thanks! Yeah, it took a lot of detective work on (sometimes contradictory) interviews and that kind of thing. Nothing was stated outright.

    Loved this video! I knew Roshar's linguistics were well developed, but this helped me appreciate the extent of that. I wish you were more robust with your sourcing though -- you got me interested in the evolution of Vorin to Alethi but I don't know where Sanderson's talked about that. Very much looking forward to the next videos in this series!

    Thanks! I said in the video to ask for sources in the comments, so you're doing the right thing! The sources for Vorin>Alethi come from: 1) interviews with Sanderson and Peter Ahlstrom where they basically outline verbally the phonology of Proto-Vorin, and some characteristics of modern Alethi (via talking about women's script, which is phonetic and pretty featural: coppermind.net/wiki/Women%27s_script) wob.coppermind.net/adv_search/?tags=linguistics. 2) correspondences between Alethi glyph components and Thaylen writing system, discovered by me (although each system individually was deciphered by u/Harakeke on reddit and confirmed by Sanderson: www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/6487-stormlight-archive-translation-guide/). coppermind.net/wiki/Glyphs, coppermind.net/wiki/Thaylen_script.

    perfect timing! I wanted to get a tattoo in women's script but was nervous about doing English directly to women's script cause it didn't seem "right" can't wait for the written languages video!

  • @simulanger

    @simulanger

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, in a lot of the graphics within books women's script does stand in directly for English, so I don't think you'd be completely wrong there. Obviously it wouldn't be totally "in-world" I guess. Is the tattoo a proper noun (where you just need the sounds) or a sentence (where you'd need translated words)?

    @@simulangerhmmm interesting note about what we see of script in the books, I've been away from my copies of the books for the last few months so hadn't been able to see what they write there! I was gunna at least do first oath, which luckily you already translated in this video, I'm way too cautious when it comes to tattoos that I'll probably be deciding alethi/English for the next few months as I gaze at the options!

    Phenomenal content, just the niche stuff I was hoping for. Liked and subbed for more. I would feel better with a vocal spoiler warning for some of the lore you discuss, especially with regards to the Shin. I for one am a listener more than a watcher, though I need fear no spoiler anymore.

    I really enjoyed your video, i've been a fan of your videos for a while and a fan of stormlight for longer, i'd been curious about the languages of Roshar and the Cosmere since i got into linguistics but i was too lazy to comb through the text and Wobs to figure it out. Thanks for your video, it shows that you've put effort and research into it.

    Well honestly Brandon Sanderson will probably hire a conlanger pretty soon when adaptions come! However, he might just use Peter Ahlstrom or other people he already knows who know linguistics.

    Good question! I mention it briefly, but Herdazian is a member of the Vorin family, most related to Veden and Alethi. Although because of Herdazian heritage it probably is at least somewhat influenced by Dawnchant and/or Iri languages. Sadly we just have very little documentation for it :(
