THE LANDS OF OSTEN ARD - Before You Read Memory Sorrow and Thorn
#tadwilliams #ostenard #memorysorrowthorn #booktube
This is my first attempt at making some non review content so I hope you enjoy it. I decided to create a video going over the various regions with some small details of the setting and culture for the world of Osten Ard. Memory Sorrow and Thorn has such rich worldbuilding and cultures that I wanted to pay some respect to it and also make it easier for new readers to jump into. Thank you so much for watching.

Everyone had a door to Fantasy that they entered in their teen years and sticks with them to adulthood. Most it was Harry potter, to a lot it was Lord of the Rings, to some it was Wheel of time and others it was A Song of Ice and Fire. For a fifteen year old me, though, it was Memory, Sorrow and Thorn. I love the others but I'll always be a weary traveler of Osten Ard.

I understand that this video was done some 3 years ago but the algorithm just popped up on my Booktube…This series is so underrated, under hyped and under appreciated on BookTube due to the fact 90% of BookTuber’s are so hung up on Brandon Sanderson that nothing else matters to them…I cut my teeth in fantasy on this series and it’s what sold me on not just epic fantasy but fantasy in general…It ranks as my 3rd favorite fantasy series of All-Time even though it was the first one that I read…Thank You for helping to promote this series I think like you if more people read it more people will come to appreciate and love it and for me personally it is easily one of the top 10 fantasy series of All-Time… and it’s not done yet as the sequel series has its final book coming out in November…It is a massive sprawling epic fantasy series that is incredibly imaginative and extremely well written by one of the most underrated and under appreciated authors in fantasy Tad Williams…So thank you again for bringing it to the attention of BookTube and to your many subscribers and I hope more people will pick it up and give it a try…😊❤️📚

Lovely video! I applaud ALL content that brings more attention to my fav story of all times! That said I have a few friendly objections. If GRRM's White Walkers resemble a people of Osten Ard it is the pale Sithi cousins called the Norns dwelling in far the far North in Nakkiga. Talking of regions you forgot to mention the Thrithings where the the nomad living horse-clans dwell on the vast Grasslands. The Last King of Osten Ard has a whole book named for them => Empire of Grass. Also that series will not be finished this year but in 2022. The Navigator's Children got delayed due to the fricking virus. And lastly: I bet Tiamak disagrees wholeheartedly about the Wran being awful and boring ;-)

I do hope for some follow up of sorts that explains areas like the Stone of Farewell as I’m 150 pages or from the end, and I can’t really understand the importance of that area besides being Josua’s stronghold and a previous Sithi land so if that could ever be in the works, I’ll be really grateful. The Norns wished to eradicate the humans, while the Sithi wished to leave them be, so long as they didn't tresspass in their territories. @@jaxstacks1253 yes, thank you for this, and I do know this part of the story as it’s related to the dreams Simon had. But, it still doesn’t really deviate much from my previous thought of it being a previous Sithi land that now acts like Josua’s stronghold. To be fair, this is VERY important to the lore of the world and it definitely added an interesting angle to it (the world is why I kept reading the trilogy even when I didn’t love it love it because it’s so interesting). I personally just thought there is something bigger for it, possibly something related to the swords like a famous example, Mordor in LOTR and it’s relation the One Ring. Hence my confusion and search, but from your reply and my own experience, I can now conclude this line of thought with: “the Stone of Farewell is an important historical place to the world of Osten Ard, but there is no big thing related to it in regards to the story this time along like the example I provided.” Thanks again, I really appreciated this.

I wouldn't say there are many races. There are like four races. The Quanuk, Humans, Keida'ya, and the Tinukeda'ya. There are many human cultures and the Keida'ya (gardenborn) are divided into the Norns and Sithi. I do not recall if an origin is given for the Quanuk (trolls). The Tinukeda'ya are the oddballs of the series because they take divergent evolution way too seriously and from them we have the sentient Dwarrow, Niskie, and Giants (though the giants arent as articulate as the former), and then the more animal like semi-sentient offshoots; the little squirrel dudes in aldheorte, the Kilpa who are like the creature from the black lagoon but in the ocean, and the insectoid lobster boys called Ghantz, and it's implied that the evil mini dirt goblin guys called Bukkan are also Tinukeda'ya. The Tinukeda'ya being the Changling race. While being unlikely, it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility that Dragons could be Tinukeda'ya due to the fact that both originate from the same place, The Dreaming Sea, but other than having the same place of origin there is nothing else connecting Dragons and Tinukeda'ya.

@@thefantasynuttwork i´ve read 25 % now of Book 1, wow there are really a lot of Game of thrones stuff, the throne, the comet, the sleeping creatures under the ice, the man with one hand and more. i love ice and fire and kingkiller chronicle, and i think this could be great as them

I am definitely going, just not yet. I still have to finish my exploration of the Banished Lands, dive into Roshar, experience Earthsea, galavant through Chicago, brave the perils that is the Malazan Empire, and, who knows, maybe rough The Winds of Winter if they arrive ..? Nevertheless, I am booking that flight to Osten Ard 🤓

@@chasebrammer851 I definitly recommend reading The Heart Of What Was Lost after the first trilogy, it sets the tone for the next trilogy. The third book (Navigator's Children) is supposed to come out in october 2022 🤞.
