The Land Rover Defender 90 is 2021's Coolest SUV - Two Takes

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Skip the guesswork at the dealership by visiting www.carzing.com/thesmokingtire
The Land Rover Defender 90 may not actually have a 90" wheelbase like its name, or its history, would suggest, but that doesn't mean it's not a brilliant exercise in usable, comfortable space versus exterior dimensions, refinement, and off-road capability. It's powertrain makes driving on tarmac easy and stress-free, even at higher speeds, while its off-roading gadgets make incredibly light work of challenging terrain, allowing you to venture farther off the pavement in incredible comfort. And it is by far the most refined cabin of any two-door SUV on the market today. This, combined with its relatively compact exterior dimensions, makes the Defender 90 our favorite SUV of 2021.

2 doors! I wish more people realized they really don't carry people around as much as they think they do. And if you have a family then have the other vehicle be the 4 door family hauler and treat yourself to something cooler looking. This would lead to more 2door SUVs getting designed and built. I think it's also the American mindset that more is always better. And in most cases the 2 doors are not that much cheaper then 4 doors so people just go with 4, and probably better resale value too. I always like the proportions much better on a 2door off road box versus the 4 door equivalent.

I was all hyped up for the new Bronco after seeing some very concerning initial reports on the (4 door) Defender regarding reliability issues. No surprise there... I thought. After watching 1,378 Bronco videos, placing a pre-order 6 months and 10 days ago as of this writing, taking a 2 day test drive in the Badlands, and playing with the configurator 27,819 times - I figured I'd check the current competition one last time as I continually wait for my Bronco. Well, that was a mistake. The Defender, especially the 90, really stole the show. I drive an e46 M3 (for the past 10 years now) and the Land Rover sales guy threw me in a 2 door 90 immediately. It wasn't even a consideration of mine considering how "impractical" I thought it was but it's really just the same interior cabin with a tiny trunk. Most of the length 'lost' vs the 110 is in the trunk. Even better, though "hard" to get in and out of, is the rear's safari windows are located above the rear seats instead of above the trunk space in the 4 door / 110. Throw in the ~$4,000 cheaper MSRP and the $10,000-$20,000 cheaper dealer mark up and you have a really strong competitor right now. I couldn't agree with your thoughts regarding the interior comfort any more. The glass in the Defender is insulated. The roof is endlessly more practical (I prefer the panoramic roof which allows for clearance for the factory roof rack). If I'd go with the Bronco, I don't see myself taking the doors off to go to the Whole Foods hot bar on a Tuesday for lunch. Although I still really like the Bronco, it's held up too much by Wrangler design constraints it should have never forced upon itself to include. *Au revoir, Shosquatchanna.*

I have the 6-cylinder 90, no complaints so far other than the awful gas mileage in LA traffic + you can't put steelies on the 6-cylinder models due to the brakes. People harp on reliability but that's what the warranty is for. The cloth sunroof seems ridiculous though, considering the glass sunroof is cheaper.

Interesting comments about start stop. My Jeep’s system won’t turn off the engine if it’s trying to cool or heat. I find it annoying that it won’t shut off if I have the ac on low with a low fan speed. Pretty much needs to have the hvac on auto and near the temp selected for it to work. . But my tazer remembers the last state of traction control and auto start stop amongst giving me full locker and sway bar control.

The Defender is also a fantastic touring vehicle. Comfortable, quiet and agile thanks to the shorter wheelbase. Drive it in the city, in the country and on the highway. And this winter we already had ample opportunity to test the suitability for snow. I would never buy a German car. Greetings from Munich 😛

I have a Touareg TDI for towing now with a family of 4 in comfort and this seems like an ideal replacement for it in a few years without having to go with a truck. As a detailer i can tell you that these new Defenders are one of the most difficult cars to wash and dry.. Too many awkward areas like the front and rear light recesses.. Also, i do not think these will stand the test of time like the old models. Too much plastic in the interior which, to be fair, does have some decent details. Like too many cars nowadays though, i feel the build quality leaves much to be desired. Personally i find all of the Land Rover products to be very overpriced and not built or designed well at all. Just a detailers opinion. I deal with vehicles every day and have done for 20 years and in that time, quality, fit and finish have gone to shit..

Most broncos you will see on the road won't be base broncos, they'll be Outer Banks, Badlands, Wildtrak, or First Edition trim packages and they'll be in the $50-60K MSRP. My Badlands with high package (not Sasquatch) has an MSRP of $53K. The Defender 90 starts at $47K and has a much nicer interior than my Badlands Bronco.

One hell of an ignorant comment. Really shows you've never owned one. I've taken my and my wife's family 8 ppl total (3 crammed in the 3rd row) deep into the snow and deserts. Never an issue. My defender easily went through an area where a tacoma and jeep had trouble going through while the family were enjoying the views.

I wouldn’t be caught dead in a jeep or bronco or rav 4. If you aren’t at a higher level it’s fine.

it doesn't look good, it looks like the next gen version of a 2009 Ford Escape. I mean it doesn't look bad but it looks super cheap

16:36 Actually the Bronco beats the Defender handedly at basically all off-roading, but you guys don't really do off roading, you drive on nicely maintained dirt fire roads and call it off-roading. The Defender is a nice road going SUV, but it's not an off-roading vehicle.

They basically said to buy the Defender if you were going to be driving more on paved roads than off-road. Watch the whole video.

It is an off roading car, but its also good at everything else, which is why most people will prefer it.

There's very little that'll stop a defender in its tracks. Putting proper off roading tyres on and wheels and it'll be virtually unstoppable !!

Actually every off road review of the Defender disagrees with you. I apologize you think a good off road vehicle needs to be miserable to live with I guess?

@@ThatRosco458 No, actually they don't. This is what happens when you try to actually use a Defender off-road: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZW1lo9V6g9nTmZs.html
