In the far north-west of the American continent stretches a land some one and a half million square kilometres in size. Only six hundred thousand people inhabit this region where the frozen tundra, the coniferous forests and the mountains dominate a landscape which, in some places, has never been trodden by man.
The start of the melt announces the resurgence of life in Alaska. With the vegetation, food returns, and the largest of Alaska's land carnivores, the grizzly bear, awakes from its winter sleep. The grizzly bear belongs to the same species as the European bear, but its better diet enables it to grow much bigger. A Pyrenean bear weighs around 300 kilos and stands two metres tall, while on Kodiak island some bears can weigh almost 1,000 kilos and measure 3 metres. The grizzlies are solitary animals, and at the start of spring hunger makes them even more dangerous. In times of hunger the adult bears are capable of killing and eating young of their own species.
All of them are waiting for the salmon to arrive, their only hope in this cold, hostile land. Each year thousands of salmon return to the rivers where they were born, providing the local wildlife with the food they need to build up the reserves necessary to survive the long, harsh winter. They are manna from the sea, the reserves of protein and fat everyone is waiting for. The salmon, quite simply, are life.
The salmon have finally reached the land they originally came from, but their odyssey has just begun. Now, they have to face seagulls, eagles, otters, and above all the great predator of Alaska, the largest land carnivore in the world the grizzly bear.
The indefatigable salmon again set off on their journey home. But their bodies must undergo major transformations, sexual glands have been developed and prevent them from eating. They will have to conquer the rapids, leap up waterfalls and escape from their predators without eating a single thing.
at this time of summer, fishing has become almost a game, and they don't even eat the majority of those they catch. Along the riverbanks float hundreds of dying salmon, and the bodies of those who were unable to survive this demanding test.
The salmon also benefit from this natural selection. The fact this test is so demanding means only the fittest will make it to the end. Moreover, the number of salmon that come to these coasts every year is such that, if they all reached their final destination, the rivers would be saturated. The last to arrive destroy eggs previously laid by others, and prepare their own nests right there. The population needs to be controlled, and that is precisely the role the predators perform.
Finally, after many hardships, the salmon make it to their respective spawning grounds. After choosing a suitable place, the salmon prepare their nests.

Im a 35 yr old man and cant get out alot to see much wildlife but i do try to observe it in our back garden. We have a field mouse, wood pigeons and various other birds. We also recently put in a little wildlife pond which has already this year had some water beatles in it. We mainly put it there because we had a lovely little frog in our garden, we thought it would make a good home for it maybe even attract a few more. Recently though weve had some work done in our garden in the way of a conservatory being biult im just hoping that with the work going on it hasn't frightened it away. Winter is more or less up on us an ive been checking around the pond but no signs of it, I just hope to see it again in spring :(

Thats awesome! I'm sorry though you are not able to get around much, I'm sorta of same position, but isn't Gods' creation wonderful! I also have small garden and love to see how things grow, I captured a frog in hopes it would stay lol, (slugs) galore! but haven't seen it since so guessing it left, maybe I can try your pond idea and see if I don't end up with a few, I've lots of different birds and all kinds crawling things just hearing the birds in the mornings and evenings it's like an Orchestra, I like to think their praising God for His goodness, God Bless you, and sure hope your little frog is just gone under ground maybe not gone :D

No you don’t. The bears out there in Alaska are very different then black bears. They have 3. Kind of bears out there. Brown, grizzly, and Kodak bears if you go to places like the grizzly maze or Kodak island, your chances of making it out of there alive are very slim. I would say Alaska is the most dangerous place on earth as far as animals go. You don’t stand a chance. I don’t know you but I care enough about your well being to tell you do not go. You need to watch the grizzly man documentary. Those bears in Alaska attack you for no reason with a drop of a dime. They are xtreamly aggressive. A girl was sleeping in her tent recently by a grizzly bear while she slept. I will never go to Alaska. Nor should you.

I have seen many documentaries about salmon and grizzly (Kodiak) bears. At 750p, this is one of the best. There is a nice poetic quality to it, while it still manages to entertain and educate. (I just found out why male salmon stop eating: it is because of the enlargement of their gonads to the point of preventing swallowing). Worth a watch.

Won’t mind living in a log cabin by the stream and living off nature. Heaven on earth. I used to remember when fish were abundant and we would catch lots when fishes go upstream together to lay eggs. Environment and the stream itself has been destroyed to a point of no return and even the stream is drying without a single stone left to pick as it has been stripped clean for years. Humans are the problem to everything.

Well I'm 5 minutes in and I'm confused. I thought this was a documentary about Grizzly bears. I'll watch a few more minutes and hope to see them. So far the fish has been the story of the bear documentary. Well it took 8 minutes for the bears to show.

Bait and switch title but still decent. Should be called "The Salmons' Run". I just skipped to the parts I wanted to see, which surprise surprise, was GIANT BEARS.

Beautiful filming but inaccurate narrative. An example is that orcas don’t decide to ‘eat meat’ because salmon are scare. There are different species of orcas, one group that eat fish and another group with much larger jaws that eat mammals.

Hard to explain, but the narration lends a sad, heavy overtone to this otherwise enjoyable film.

More about salmon then bears, & the galls seem to get just about as much play time as the bears.
