The Lamborghini Aventador Disappointed Me. Will The "S" Do The Same?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In today's video I am driving the Lamborghini Aventador S. Allegedly a big step on from the 2011 original, these may be even rarer than the wild SVJ. But, is it a driver's car?

    The reason downshifts in corsa mode are so soft is simply because, on track, you want downshifts to be this way in order to avoid lockup in corners. It's not meant to be pretty, but practical.

  • @ianjenkins4641

    @ianjenkins4641

    Жыл бұрын

    You’re talking milliseconds here so not sure how you describe it as slow. It’s a single clutch system with what is essentially a manual gearbox with actuators and a pump. It changes gear with a pull on a button in did your say 60 milliseconds? If you were driving a manual car, you would have to press the clutch pull it out of one gear and push it into the next gear and that would probably take 4 times as long.

  • @BigUriel

    @BigUriel

    Жыл бұрын

    @@ianjenkins4641 These "X milliseconds" shift times quoted by manufacturers are generally meaningless. They are at most a "best case scenario" of the fastest the gearbox can possibly shift in very ideal conditions (ie only at very specific speeds/load/rpm/gear in the fastest mode when the gearbox oil is at perfect temperature and Saturn is ascending). Anyone who has ever driven any car with these kind of gearboxes knows that most of the time they don't shift that fast, even dual clutch boxes often don't shift that fast - 60 milliseconds is faster than a blink and no matter how smoothly they might try to make the engagement of the clutches it would inevitably result in a hell of a jolt in a decently powerful car at a generous throttle opening. I'm pretty sure these times also refer from the moment the TCU receives the input to shift to the moment the gear is actually engaged and the clutch released, which is not what the driver experiences - as the driver what you care about is how quickly it's all done from the moment you *select* the gear, which is very different because from you pulling the paddle to the signal being processed by the ECU, all the calculations done in regards to whether the shift is allowed at that RPM, whether the traction control will step in etc and the final confirmation being sent to the TCU there is a hell of a lot more than 60ms - this is why cars with these gearboxes often shift noticeably slower with the traction control on. In short it's all marketing BS. Unfortunately there are no figures that can tell you how good a gearbox is to use, the only way to know is to actually test drive it. And many (most?) of these robotized automatic gearboxes which supposedly shift very quickly are really quite rubbish in the real world. The most infamous example is probably BMWs SMG, great on paper and they also quoted something like 60-100ms shift time, absolutely terrible and jerky gearbox in practice that just about ruins perfectly good cars like the E6x M5/M6.

    @@ianjenkins4641 but it is ONLY in Corsa mode, above 6000rpm, with fair throttle that you get the fast upshift. Never in Sport. Never in Street. That's not right. What's the point of building a gearbox so fast if it so rarely is?

    Good to see you keeping the spirit of the Aventador alive, James. This video maintained your high quality production and informative delivery. As a current Aventador S owner, who previously owned a 2013 Aventador and a manual Murcielago, for me the Aventador S is the best car and best Lamborghini I have ever driven so I don’t think this review is truly representative of what the Aventador S is about. And as an owner who owned an Aston Martin Rapide simultaneously with my 2013 Aventador - I would always take the Aventador for my long trips over those GT cars. I think James, you missed an important point - a Lambo v12 isn’t designed to fit the driving style of anyone who is brave enough to pilot one. The driver must adapt their driving style to it. The Aventador S is so different to the original car that there is no way that driving each car for such a short period of time could highlight that. Is the Aventador S worth £100k more? I thought so and wouldn’t go back to owning a 2013 car. The Aventador S is the rarest of rhe Aventadors apart from the “one offs” and “few offs”. I think you can only really tell what a car is like when you’ve owned it and lived with it for a few years. The Aventador S is the equivalent of the manual LP640 for this generation - overlooked at conception but sought after by connoisseurs. Anyway - keep up the good work.

    …and Sir Jay’s word of the day today isssss????? …”Inexplicably!” Ive counted 7 times? Just bustin balls brother. Greetings from the US! Its bright and early, birds chirpin, 27 degree Miami morning and im starting my day off with your vid! Hey, not sure if you’re at all interested, i actually may be possibly the only one requesting a review like this LoL… but it would be cool to see a vid of my current BMW, the F01/02 750 M-sport. It was a massive departure from its predecessor for sure! The 1st gen Rolls Royce Ghost was based on the F02 which is cool.. well in some aspects. My front bumper was flapping and i lost the side “bumper camera”..$585.00 USD! Why? Because its the same one as the RR! LoL But seriously, theyre brutal monsters actually! 400-450HP, 0-60 in low 4’s, theres also a ECU mod out there that gives it an extra 100hp! Its also basically the same 4.4.L M5 engine just slightly detuned. But that whole time frame is now considered an “ERA”…introduction of “Hot V” engines, styling that has evolved into today, the 7 series, MB S550, XJ, A8, etc. It’s a time in history where all the German MFRS’ came out of a very tough run in the early 2000’s!! …the Bangle Butt 7, the W220, …the point where they were all at their lowest point. Well, what came after was a significant departure from all the Big Saloon MFR’s. But would love to see the F01/02 or a LineUp Comparison? Anyway, im blabbing incoherently because its way too early for me. ❤️ you’ve got a fan in Florida! ☀️

    I think what Jay is saying is that when in cross the upshifts give you that Aventador thump but the downshifts are non-existent. Then when the downshifts are giving the character the upshifts aren’t. I agree that you would want to whole experience when you’re driving an Aventador not one or the other

Maybe I'm missing something? Enjoy your video's, always honest, keep up the great work. Cheers!

    The reason many of these cars are black, grey or white is because its owners have a very perticular taste: an often changing one. So they buy it and wrap it in whatever color they find attractive for perticular season. If you do that on a black or white car everything is fine. But if you try to wrap a car that is yellow, red, orange, blue, green etc. you'll often end up with a paint colour breaking thru a foil and ruining the effect.

    Lamborghini, definitely cool! Loud, gorgeous bodies and somewhat obnoxious styling? Which I love. I can't do Aventador problems though. I like their cars but, with my current location being Michigan with terrible roads, it's just not worth it for me to own something like this. I drive a Supra, and it does just fine. I can beat on it, and not worry about it setting my neighbors hedges afire. Good luck to anyone who owns one. If the Huracans replacement gains a touch more headroom, maybe then I can take a serious look?

    I'm a N/A guy, big time, for fun cars. I should love the current Lambo lineup (excluding the VAG Urus obviously), but most of them simply don't speak to me. Far too much of the poser's cars, and the Aventador - to me - is the king of the poser's cars. ..but i do agree with you. Looking at pictures of the original Aventador now, it does it for me lookswise. With all the different versions of Aventador, to me always overshadowed by a gearbox i find embarrassing and a sad interior..but mostly that gearbox, i've forgotten that the original Aventador spoke to me in the looks department. Absolutely solid piece of design. I love that lambo exists, and are out there. But the current lineup isn't for me.

We're talking taste in cars, not whether I'm high maintenance or not. ..and another help with your comprehension: "but MOST of them simply don't speak to me". "Most" isn't "all" now is it? Nuances are important. If I one day got so stinking wealthy that I could afford an extra car only used for an hour or two, a few times a year, I would consider a STO for that position. ..but only then. Up until that level of rich I would need a car with a broader usability.

    Great review. A shame like you said about the car's dynamics vs what it's used for. Lamborghini put a lot of emphasis on handling compared to the murcielago but the Aventador is even more of a poser's car. This gearbox is like playing pelmanism 😂. Doug De Muro said the ISR gearbox was used because they couldn't fit a dsg as the torque would shred it. In turbo cars it can be ratio'd to be boost by gear to preserve the gearbox but they can't do that in a naturally aspirated car.
