The Lakes of Ponchatrain - Dan McCabe
Музыка
This is an American song which dates back to the 1800’s. The tune is older while lyricist is unknown but the lyrics can be linked to the American civil war. It tells the story of a man seeking shelter and falling in love with the woman who helps him. It is believed the lyrics are written around the time of the American civil war. There are references to foreign money being no good, which is believed to be confederate money. The song is performed most notably by Paul Brady and Andy Irvine. Not an Irish ballads but a beautiful ballad all the same. One of my all times favourite songs! Really enjoyed recording this one!

Amazing Dan, literally unbelievable. I wish me Da was here to experience this, I'm living in the UK now and Everytime I hear any of your songs, it brings a tear to my eye. And I can relate to nearly all of them in some way. I'd say Fred o,Brian and Kevin McCarthy are smiling away up there.
Beautiful!! I own a home in Slidell, Louisiana. I know Lake Pontchartrain very well. My late husband and I fished it often.

Wow 🥰
It was on one bright March morning I bid New Orleans adieu And I took the road to Jackson town My fortune to renew I cursed all foreign money No credit could I gain Which filled my heart with longing For the lakes of Pontcahrtrain I stepped on board of a railroad car Beneath the morning sun I rode the rods till evening And I laid me down again All strangers there, no friends to me Till a dark girl towards me came And I fell in love with a Creole girl By the lakes of Pontchartrain I said my pretty Creole girl My money here's no good And if it weren't for the alligators I'd sleep out in the wood " You're welcome here kind stranger Our house is very plain But we never turned a stranger out On the banks of Pontchartrain " She took me into her mammy's house And she treated me right well The hair upon her shoulders In jet black ringlets fell To try to paint her beauty I'm sure 't would be in vain So handsome was my Creole girl By the lakes of Pontchartrain I asked her if she'd marry me She said that this could never be For she had got a lover And he was far at sea She said that she would wait for him And true she would remain Till he'd return to his Creole girl By the Lakes of Pontchartrain So fare thee well, my bonny own girl I never may see you more But I'll ne'er forget your kindness In the cottage by the shore And at each social gathering A flowing glass I'll drain And I'll drink a health to my Creole girl By the lakes of Pontchartrain
Phenomenal

Good on ya Dan 👍 inspiring choice of songs. The right way to capture The Ballads. Well done. Pleasently supprised every single time. 😉
Beautiful
I love this dan you are a talented man
beautiful song sang perfectly
I'm learning to play this after hearing it for the first time last month. Love your version man, very authentic. Loving the gravel in your voice, shows the years of singing. Love the reverb levels too. I hope I can harness half the vibe you have in your version man. Top shelf mate 👍
Never heard you before. Brilliant and lovely guitar picking. That song sure brings back great memories of trad sessions and songs.
The town I love so well you would sing great.
I have loved the Paul Brady version for many years, especially the 1999 re-recorded version. You can't match Paul's peerless guitar playing (who could?), but you have a very special voice and I look forward to hearing more of your work. Lovely stuff.
Very nice rendition of this deep heart wrenching song which I enjoyed very much indeed. Your right up there with Paul Brady and I'd like to hear your youthful voice alongside Paul's guitar work ( no disrespect and I know you will understand what I am saying) Have fun my friend and I hope you are appreciated and listened to when performing (that's surely all an an artist can wish for) Thanks and regards.
So good. Up there with the best versions ive heard. Would love to hear raglan road fully and the boys of barr na sraide aswell!
