At 57 after being off road bikes for 10 years I booked to test ride the new 1200 KTM Duke and was convinced to buy it after watching Utube clips and wanting my first ever V twin and forever bike . I got back to the dealer disappointed only because you could not get off the bike and were kind of forced the option to move around and had to sit upright around corners which was a real shame and a deal breaker. I was devastated and he offered me a ride on the naked BMW 1000. I looked at it and thought another in line 4 no thanks . As I was walking out all dejected he suggested a Aprilia V4 . I said a what . He said the new 2016 Aprilia 1100 Tuono RR . Never heard off it . Well It looked OK a bit plain I thought what the Hell I've traveled over a hour to get to the test ride . WOW!!!! My antenna went up even before I got out of the car park . I hit the road, the bike was sold by the time I clicked 4th gear . That exhaust note and riding position. 2 days latter going to my more local Aprilia dealer in Sydney I discovered a factory 1100 (last brand new one in the country) and wrote out a cheque on the spot . Not been tempted by any other floozy and been together ever since. Well maybe the newer Tuono with updated electronics but I only looked .

I've owned both, I put 12k miles on my 2016 SDR. Upgraded air filter, SC Project exhaust and dyno tuned (and a lot of cosmetic mods). Absolutely loved it. I now have a 2019 V4 Factory that I've only had for a couple weeks, SC project, Race ECU and some cosmetic mods. The SDR is more enjoyable at "slower" speeds with all the lowend torque, even more upright seating position, etc. The tuono is undoubtedly better on the highway due to the aerodynamics and torque being in the higher RPM range. It's actually more comfortable for longer trips due the additional aerodynamics alone. That being said, you could put a windscreen on the SDR but I think it looks goofy. Both exhaust notes are extremely unique and amazing, both of mine were/are completely decatted so I got the raw sound. I think the Tuono sounds better as someone hearing you ride by where as the SDR sounded better for the rider, not sure why but that's how it feels.

For me it was between the super duke 2018 and tuono factory 2018. I test rode both of them for about 30 minutes each. I was not a fan of the riding position or the engine feel of the duke at all. I felt way too upright and the engine felt like a harley to me. The Aprilia felt like a tailored suit it was just perfect in every way. And the SC projects exhaust on the tuono just cannot be compared or beaten by any other moto sound.

Great review. I have had both. Both are great. And summarized accurately. I like torquing around lazily 40-90mph- with the Superduke. Shifting is purely optional. Torque always available. You can hole shot everybody leaving lights, short-shifting the quick shifter and it just punts you down the road each gear with no law enforcement or frown attracting drama. Good safe no-jail stealth speeding fun. I also have had a 2014 SDR (2017 now). They 2017 is a very slight bit better: Quick shifter, better gear box, less lugging in 6th gear, slightly stiffer suspension (pretty good for rough roads here,), pulls any of first 5 gears well from 3000rpm and up.

In the old days, when there weren't any fuel gauges, we would set the trip meter to zero then ride the piss out of it on a full tank. When the bike finally hit the reserve, we would note the mileage, then commit that number to memory as the range of the bike, give or take a few miles!!! Fuel gauge problem solved!!!

Nice work LC (and the boy Womble). 'Twas another highly enjoyable watch, although I was getting annoyed with that cloudy display on the Tuono when it was given the berries! Honestly, you'd have thought the Aprilia Bods would've managed to avoid them speedo gremlins. With regards to what I'd go for out of these 2 gorgeous machines, I'd probably have the Tuono - if it was a cash-no-object sitch. However, if I wanted a bike that was easier to work on myself; have every day usability; and something that gave me a chance of retaining my licence: it'd be the SD.

Owning a duke I appreciated the new gizmos going from a carbeurated machine to fuel injected. There were some days I felt underwhelmed by the take of power, other days I was surprised. Reaching top end after 150 felt it would take longer than it should, but I guess this depends on street vs sport mode and road elevation. Always felt I had a macho feel riding with my arms more outward, tucking felt a bit awkward at high speeds and then to just come up right. It has a cruiser/sport bike/ supermoto feel. I don't know how to describe the uniqueness all in one word. Some days I did wish I would blend in a bit but standing out felt entirely better out in a group. Especially the sound. It just overwhelms. Overall I great bike to take into corners, I think that in top of easy wheelie rise was my favorite overall. Handles excellent in the rain, even with a slick back tire. Thought I'd dump at about 70 off an exit but stayed up right. I would like to see how the tuono holds up in the same scenarios, still able to maintain an upright position but still able to tuck like a super sport. Feeling the only con will be getting used to the switch and not having a fuel gauge.

Major defining decision point for me was that I'm 6'1. The Tuono while having handlebars unlike clip-ons on a RSV sadly shares its foot peg placement. If you are a tall rider only one of these machines is capable of being ridden all day long, and then repeating that feat the next day. And that machine is the KTM. If your riding consists of only short jaunts then either machine is awesome, but I suspect that if these are the two machines you have focused on, you are pretty into riding. The taller you are and less contorted you want to be makes you a KTM pilot. If you're not concerned about being squeezed into an uncomfortable position, then why bother getting a naked? Side note, the BMW that isn't here had pretty high pegs too, and for some reason a long stretch to the bars, it didn't fit me well either.

They are in the same dealer so I can compare directly, not had time to ride them yet so can’t comment on that, but, I’m sure for my size and style of riding (lazy, more cruising along, mainly in town, with a back pack) the SDR is the better bike for me, but the Tuono noise is something I need to get out of my system. Pretty sure on riding them the SDR torque will win it though, it’s just that Tuono noise though!! It’s so addictive.

Love this gents! Got to admit, I REALLY miss my 2014 Tuono V4R and have been sorely tempted to try the new Tuono 1100 Factory as I miss the hooligan aspect of riding at times. That said, I've still not tried the Superduke or Superduke GT! Then there's the new GS coming out in 2019...... aaaaaAAAAAHHHHHHH 😬😂😉

Thanks for that Lamb Chops Rides! So in summary, the Tuono is the best comfy sports bike while the Super Duke is the best insane supermoto. The Tuono has the better sounding motor with its luscious V4 (not that the V-twin sounds bad) and the Super Duke is more roomy for riders over 6'.

Having ridden all of the super naked in the last few months, I'd say neither. The new KTM is impressive and an absolute beast, but I had 3 different software errors pop up on my test ride. The Tuono has a sweet engine, but is just too committed for my height. I have a Ninja, don't need to be crammed on a naked either. For me the standout was the FZ-10. Especially the SP that you blokes get on that side of the pond.

Both Aprillia and KTM use Rotax engines. Suspension is WP for KTM and Ohlins for the Aprillia. V-twin verses V-4. To ride both will have there good points. To own... another story.

Aprillia's V4 is result of their own development, they used to use a Rotax Vtwin before on the Tuono and RSV Mille. KTM has historically used Rotax engines but the 1290 is not one of them. Cheers from a 1125 Helicon Rotax engine user on my Buell.

Comparing a smooth V4 engine to a raw V twin isnt really fair playing field. The Tuono is a just a naked RSV4 track bike in all its incarnations whereas the SD is a brutal true naked from design. They are chalk and cheese in my opinion, and built to serve different masters depending upon what you want from your ride. good video all the same, good craic ....

Guys i've recently got an RSV4 and i have to say if you are taller than 6 ft, reconsider your options. I measure exactly 6 ft and the seating position is such a tight fit. I recon that taller people will have a hell of a time dealing with cramps. Apart from that, the Aprilia is the best of choices you could ever make.
