The Korg MS20: Uncovering Its lasting appeal.
The Korg MS20 and MS20 mini continues to be popular with modern producers despite being 45 years old. It wasn't an instant success though and this short documentary details its fall and rise throughout the decades as it was put to good use by the likes of Air, Mr Oizo, Goldfrapp, Aphex Twin and Calvin Harris to name just a few.

The interesting bit starting at 5:45 For me that is, since i had an MS20 from 1984 until 2009 and enjoyed it so much. Used it mostly live, until the point where i began craving for programmability.
It's certainly unique. To me it generally sounds more like science than music, and then even there other synths of the time can get sciencier. I'll give it weird points for the filters and points for iconic interface design.
Get the patches right and you can get some of the dirtiest, grittiest sounds. Love the MS20.
Got it for $50 in '98 from a guy who just had to buy the latest thing. Included the original manual. I mod'd mine (since i couldn't care less about resale value) to have the hard-sync and voltage control of PWM - two truly worthwhile and awesome mods (and super easy if you're good with a schematic and a soldering iron). And yeah... some cherry wood sides to boot since the old panels were in tatters. :-) My favorite out of my 13 synths. Great vid, very cool to hear about the backstory and the modern artists who used it! Cheers!

Cheers! The mod sounds interesting as does the Cheery wood sides, nice!
Thank you for the information i needed 🥇
MS-20 was the most popular synth between the early techno avant-garde after-punk bands in Spain at the very start of the 80's... And only started to became bargains when everybody were lusting for digital synths and samplers... like any other analogue stuff, at the end of the 80's... Got mine in '95 for 10.000 ptas (60 €)

@@mixingmasteringonline Yesss...! It's built like a tank... never serviced thru all these decades... In the beginning, I used a sine wave from my DX27 to the ESP, allowing me to control it remotely... but found the Little MCV from Phillip Rees. One of the few midi-to-cv converters that allow Hz/V signals at that time...

Amazing they’ve lasted that long without a service, mines still going strong too without anything needed so far..
Nicely done. Always experimenting with my mini. :)

Great video! Very informative, and the song at the end was great too. You clearly know this synth like the back of your hand, lol.

Thank you! It’s a great synth, I had the software version for a while before I was able to get my hands on the real thing.

@@mixingmasteringonline Speaking of the ending and the melody there... is that from the Thunderchild part from Jeff Wayne's Musical War of the Worlds?

my first synth , 1989 - AU$150 .Nowadays I use Arturia MS20 and MS20 by Korg soft synths , Arturia one is really on steroids , amazing sounds and features that I never manage to get out of hardware . Highly recommend it even if you have a hardware machine , just more of MS20 there , 🪤 ...

yes !!! and I love it for it is a mildest form of MS20 / as in presets ( even neighbours would like it ! ), like anything from Cherry audio , presets are superb , also love the green interface , must have for any serious MS20 lover@@simonburns1055
