    A really cool trick I found is to connect the S&H to the self-oscillating filter and then add an autotune in your DAW that is (obviously) set to the key of your song. The MS20 will magically start generating melodies for you.

    the coolest thing i ever did with the sample and hold was to connect a radio to the ext. input then connect the FtoV to the S&H in and the trigger from the ext. input to S&H clock and the S&H out to the VCO in. there was a bit more fiddling but it ended up sounding a grown-up from the Peanuts mocking the person speaking on the radio

    I just tried an MS-20 Mini for the first time today (first time using patches at all) and this was the first trick the staff guy showed me. Straight away I thought it sounded awesome but veered too far between extremes to sound comfortable - so I asked if you could run the output voltage through a filter first to remove some of the very high results. He put it through the external signal processor and effectively bandpassed it, and it sounds *fantastic* as a subtle, high-rate modulation on the LP VCF cutoff.

    I remember my first encounter with an MS-20 in a reseller store. I spent 30 minutes to figure out how the sample & hold worked. I was used to pre-patched synths back then. Then I made a kickass sound with it, the store owner liked it so much he didn't want me to remove the chords when I was done.

    @9321Electribes: S&H is a much more random feature than an arpeggiator. The arp plays notes of a chord in a sequence and octave shifts notes depending on the setting. BTW the Juno 106 did not have an arpeggiator, this was only present on the 6 and 60 models

    Is there a way to run a guitar through the sample and hold? And come out of the esp into the sample and hold? Or does it only work when the vcos are turned up?

    Thanks for this. Couldn't figure out how to get the classic computer beeps using sample and hold. Now when i got the result i wanted, the only thing i can't figure out is why the signal becomes clear when turning the waveform knob all the way to the right? If i keep it in the middle or the left it gets mixed with some other signal. Can anyone explain this to me please.

    is there any way to synchronize the s/h patch or just the square wave to the tempo of an external midi sequencer?? Thank you:)

  • @warrenjcooper

    @warrenjcooper

    The internal modulation generator can't be synched to midi. You need to use some external synched LFO and go in through the patch bay with that. Options are (but not limited to) Silentway (software, will use a load of outputs on your audio interface, but probably most flexible), Microbrute (not so versatile in terms of divisions of midi clock or LFO waveforms, but you would own a Microbrute, which is an awesome synth) or a Kenton Pro-Solo or Pro-2000. I went for the Microbrute. It's doing a job for me, but I would still dearly love a Kenton Pro-2000 for it's many lovely LFO waveforms and the ability to have midi CC control over voltages to pass in through the patch bay. They're over £300 - a lot of cash for something that doesn't make a sound. The clock input of the sample and hold can be triggered by just about anything that kicks out a voltage. This could even be audio - 808 rim shot? Doesn't have to be from a real 808. Worth a try...

    Hi,what clock does in sample hold?

  • @tanchwa3740
    @tanchwa3740 Жыл бұрын

    well I think mine's busted, cause whenever the hold isn't being triggered, the original signal just passes through. Is this normal behavior? I'd imagine it should not let that through. To clarify: trigger= just the sampled voltage, not triggered= original source, in this case noise, to completely pass through

    man I’m so confused - everything used to work just as it does in this video. Now I only get randomness within the pitch equivalent of a half step when I hold a key down - is it possible for pink noise to get burnt out or something? It randomizes properly on each new key press for like a fraction of a second, but then back to boringsville

    the so called "sample and hold" on the ms20mini is really a track and hold, meaning that the input voltage is only held when the clock input is high. Not sure if that helps, but it was not mentioned in this video and its an important distinction to make.

    @@RAFI205 I've had the same problem: I believe it's because the White Noise level is too low. I measure it at about 1.0 Vpp, whereas the spec sheet says it should be 5 Vpp! Same for Pink noise. Running it through the ESP amp increases it by some. Solution is addressed at the very bottom of this thread ("Luciano Fiumara 2 years ago"), but it seems to be cut off. I pulled the right hand end panel off, and think I can see the variable resistor (pot) that adjusts the white noise amplitude. I'll try to increase it today....

    I think my unit may be faulty. I copied the patch exactly, but the variance in pitches and filter cutoffs is very narrow and subtle. I patched the white noise generator through the ESP to boost the signal and I can almost get what you get here, but that shouldn't be needed as evidenced in your video. I think I'm gonna try to get it exchanged. Hopefully I can. I waited to try this kind of patch and the warranty has expired, but Sweetwater has a 2 year warranty so maybe they'll do right by me. PSA: Learn all the features quick, kids, so you can find out any problems while in warranty!

    The white noise generator? Are you just trying that out of desperation because the pink noise gen wasn't working as indicated here or have you been trying the white noise all along? I only ask because he specifies the pink noise gen in the video.

    I used both. I got my replacement and my unit was indeed faulty. Both white and pink will work, but the pink is more drastic. On my faulty one, neither would work without boosting via the ESP. There was also some white noise bleed in the mixer which is gone in the replacement I got. So something was screw. Sounds beautiful now.
