I just... uh... REALLY wish they had just slapped the SEGA CD version of Snatcher's English script on there... c'mon guys...

I love them too, playing with the controller and sat by the tv is such a throw back . I buy them at Cons where fold sell them hacked for barely any mark up. SNES and NES with 300 games for £50.Aye! Can’t wait for a MEGA DRVE and this hacked and sold.

Can't. The SegaCD version had significant differences, the translation wouldn't fit. Also, does Konami own that translation, or was it done by Sega?

I want to thank you for the very measured and proper explanation of how these games play on the mini vs original hardware. There are too many big channels nitpicking the input lag and calling some games near unplayable that is somewhat shameful... to the point where I had to create my own set of videos and do thorough lag test comparisons to set the record straight. Of course my channel is new and small so few will see it, but I wanted to drop a line and thank you for a proper measured explanation. Mine wasn't quite as kind lol, but the gist was there. A friend linked me here and you've earned my Subscribe!

It's a real shame that the turbografx didn't really catch on. At the time it had the only way to play castle vania rondo of blood or castle vania dracula X This is probably one of the best mini consoles I've ever seen.

@@shaolin95 It wasn't underpowered. The reason it didn't catch on was because of the model NEC/Hudson used to develop and license their games. NEC and Hudson bought the rights and ported games themselves (like Street Fighter II), which worked fine in Japan where NEC was a consumer electronics giant, but they didn't have the infrastructure elsewhere to translate, release, and advertise all those games. Whereas Capcom translated, manufactured, and advertised their games for the Genesis and SNES, to bring them to America meant that NEC/Hudson's American outfit would handle all that work not only for Capcom, but every single game on the system.

I got t pc engine mini from japan on release. It’s awesome, and you get salamander with the turbografx. I’ve got all the minis and they’re all great, especially the snes/super famicom and (Japanese) mega drive.. but this one is incredible

I still have my original but totally want this one even if it's just to finally play Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and Supergrafx's Ghouls'n Ghosts. Still shocked the amazing Legendary Axe was left out, it's one of the main games i think of when I think TG-16. Glad to see you covering this!

@P1 Styles the Turbo Grafx 16 didn't do well in the U.S., but it was #2 behind the SNES and ahead of the Genesis in Japan

several of the games include alternate versions as easter eggs, accessible by hilighting them on the menu and hitting sellect. they are: gradius, detana twinbee, Salamander, fantasy zone, and souldger blade. in the case of salamander, gradius, and fantasy zone, this takes the form of a "near arcade version" which is an arrangement version that tries to better mimmic it's arcade source material (the gradius one even goes so far as recreating the bubble system's bootup sequence, complete with morning music, before the title screen appears). in the case of detana twinbee, it takes the form of a port of the original twinbee arcade, using detana twinbee's assets. in the case of souldger blade, the alternate version is the "caravan version", which was a time attack mode that was created for a series of esports competitions set up by hudson in the late 1980s. also within the system is a fully fleshed out version of the force gear arcade minigame from tokimeki memorial, marking that franchise's western debut.

for me those systems are just another chance to play games that i missed because i was either too young, they never were available in my region or i had not the money to get them, i would kill for a Saturn, Dreamcast or NeoGeo Mini

I just play CDRs on a mod chipped Saturn with a Pound HDMI cable. Same for Dreamcast, but no mod chip.

The lack of translation for Japanese text heavy games like Snatcher boggles my mind. Why even include them on the NA release?

*UPDATE ON 25TH MAY 2020: I just bought this thing on amazon, it was $108 and now i have to handle international shipping, so that will be around $20 shipping and maybe $10 customs , the item will ship from amazon on sunday and needs like a week to reach my house. for almost $110 with taxes and free shipping, i rather wait for a price drop, i guess maybe when it is around $85 then i would pick it up, i find it hard to go pick up a $100 amazon gift card and still a bit short, so will wait a bit for anything under the $100 mark and i will be good, but at this price ? if it was $100 net price, then yeah, but we all know amazon and taxes, will wait a month or so and see.

While I understand your sentiments I don't trust Konami. I jumped all over this when it hit the Japanese market. Unfortunately, all of the TG-16's were completely sold out. Thankfully, I snagged a Core Grafx Mini and paid $111.00 total for the entire process. It shipped to me in 4 days all the way from Japan! These machines are white hot right now. I worry once the thrill dies down Konami will pull the product from the market...they're good for that. Believe me, I know saving money is important but I don't want anyone to miss this thing. I own most of the mini consoles (Atari 2600/Collecovision/Intellivision was before my time) and this mini is truly a cut above them all. With a grand total of 66 games (67 if you count the English version of Ninja Gaiden) that spans the machines life...it's worth every penny my friend.

People who want something will get it, if they don't want it..they are maxing excuses.

@@Cyril29a I know , problem is , ur not living where I am , we dont use $ , we need to exchange currency to get $ for amazon , problem is we are having an economical crisis so the value of our local money went down to 3x , so that means , $100 today costs 3 times what it used to be , so those $25 extra will cost me around an extra $100 to get them , it is a sad story , I really didn't want to explain my awful reasons , but imagine this happening to u , instead of paying $100 for this , u have to pay around $350 with money exchange , I am already losing so much just paying for that $100 Amazon code ... sorry sounded sounded stingy , I am just in a huge pickle.

I got my pc engine mini a few days ago, and now I’m just waiting on my turbo pad to come (Amazon Japan shipped them separately for some reason). So far I’m extremely happy with it. I can’t wait until Project Phobos goes live for it :)

The turbo has some great games and series that would translate real well to modern games. Bonk and Air Zonk would be great to bring back.

I couldn't wait any longer so I made an Japanese Amazon account and ordered a Core Grafx Mini. It got to my home in 4 days for $10.00 shipping! What an amazing machine... Here's something most people do not know, when you load the front end on the PCE Mini/Core Grafx Mini/TG-16 Mini if you press run and start again it will do a soft reset. This way you don't have to go back to the game menu to restart a game. I didn't see that anywhere on the documentation that came with my Core Grafx Mini. I was trying to run Romdo of Blood without any save states but I really screwed up and went down the wrong path (Top=Richter, Bottom=Maria). I went to restart the game and load...I thought what happens if I press them again...voila it reset my mini console. There are 67 games on this machine. You have to press select before choosing several games. The arcade version of Fantasy Zone is here as well but it won't give you a sound when you unlock it. The only game I have a problem with is Ninja Gaiden. I don't know what it is but it's completely unplayable for me. I can run through the Nes version untouched but this one...no.

Mine comes in Tuesday, I can't wait to play it

It's worth noting that all three variants of the TG16 Mini had defective consoles in the first batch where the USB controller ports would either not function at all or stop functioning after a period of time. It's unclear if this defect has been addressed in the systems being sold on Amazon US, but to be safe you should use an exact 5V 2amp AC adapter, as recommended at the end of the video, I know I will when mine comes Tuesday!

@@TheTrueBro SNES Mini's power brick is 5V 1.5amps, it does work, but I'm going to go with the exact specifications requested, just to be as safe as possible and avoid any damage to the system in the future.

Yeah I got mine this past week and am a little disappointed on the size. I remember it being just a tiny bit bigger than the mini maybe 30 percent. I much rather have the Core Grafx system size otherwise great product just wish Keith Kourage and Legendary Axe 1 and 2 were on there along with all 3 Bonks adventure. Hopefully we can hack it with the 4 gigs of memory on the system along with translations.

I personally like the larger size of the unit..gives it a more accurate Turbografx 16 feel and experience, which is important. Tired of these minis that are so small that they can fit in the palm of your hand.

I only played Sega and Nintendo growing up an this system seems great and so does the Amiga 500 mini. Oh and can't forget the Atari 2600 played that as a child as well and it's mini is something I plan to get as well.

I also agree that this one is the best mini console. The only thing I hope for, to make it even better is, if they are going to release additional controllers in Turbopad design and not only the PC Engine ones. I know 8bitdo has made the wireless ones but the "label design" is not that close to the orginal and i really prefer switches over turbo buttons. All in all a good review! *Subscribed*

I could finally order one of these, after being out of stock in Amazon for too long. I will try as soon as I have some spare time, but I am sure I'll give a lot of time to those shoot them ups.

Picked up one and it's my first mini. I love shootemups and this one doesnt disappoint. If the original system and games werent so expensive I would collect it.

I got mine yesterday. I'm only 20 years old so I didn't grow up with the original system and had never played. but man am I hooked. the games are incredibly fun. I'm not much of a shooter guy, so the number of shooters included in this package was a bit disappointing at first, but once I started to play the other games like new adventure island, ninja spirit, neutopia, and others made the package worth it. i now want find myself a original TG16, and im hoping a mod for the mini comes out to add more games

Picked up the TG-16 mini and love it. A bit shooter heavy, but some really fun games too. Since it's my first time playing the system, I have no idea what games are missing.

I got the tg mini at the end of 2020. I had never played the TG16 before and absolutely love the mini. My favorite game hands down is soldier blade.

It's ridiculous that the AC Adapter is not included and sold seperatly

It's par for the course with this mini consoles. I'm not defending them, but those USB bricks are readily available or cheap. Also if you have modern HDTV (I have a Sony 4K from 2016), you can get power from your TV if it has a USB port!

ita not.. those things get shipped worldwide, yet different countries got different plugs. those power blocks are dirt cheap and everbody should have several by now. why amp up production cost, complicate packaging/shipment and waste recources?

I vote to see a Saturn sports episode, the best of the best like NBA LIve 98, WSB 98, and others. I dont remember if you did a video about Saturn sports yet.

And anyone reading who gets one, don't forget to pop your tv into games mode to prevent lag! Seems most 'expert' reviewers don't know this even though lag is minimal anyway and doesn't detract from gameplay whatsoever!

Think you'll love the tg16 mini...I've all 3 as I'm a collector of anything pc engine for over 30 years! The mini is very helpful at keeping work hours off my original 30yr old equipment & drives!🙂 Enjoy yours, it's truly a great package, and if can hopefully just get a few more roms on after hacked, the games line-up will be perfect!

I know the modding community will likely fix the missing games but these are the additions I wish were originally offered: Keith Courage in Alpha Zones (this is ludicrous that it was omitted seeing it was the pack in game), Legendary Axe 1 + 2, Kato and Ken (Japanese uneditted version of JJ and Jeff), Gates of Thunder, Devil's Crush, Dragon's Curse, Bloody Wolf (how the "bloody" f_-_ could they leave this game out?), Magical Chase, Final Lap Twin, Battle Royale, Andre Panza's Kick Boxing and the TV Sports series

Even at full price, this is worth it for Ys1&2 and Rondo of Blood alone. Salamander, Super Star Soldier, Military Madness and Blazing Lazers are nice touches. And the rest just gives you a nice slice of the systems'libraries.

Good review. I never had a TG-16 back in the day and I want this, but with the recent mini systems having dropped in price super fast I'm in no rush. I'll wait for the inevitable price drop.

People were saying it was $100 so I got all set on buying one, then I found out it was $250 and still wanted it. Supply problem or brilliant market tactic?

I know this is off topic of this video, I just had to thank Sega Lord X, for mentioning on the Japanese Sega Saturn, you can set the system language to English, on the Saturn video. I had ordered one on eBay last year, and when testing recent CD Pickups(I know that may sound silly nowadays), I accidentally set it to "Play Intros" I think, and it played like 9 seconds of a track. Anyway I have my Saturn set to English now, and know what I did wrong. There's actually a good amount of options on the Saturn's CD Player menu

1st thing I did when mine arrived.... sat it on the original to see the size difference. 2nd was to compare the controllers (not identical, minor differences) and then fired up Dracula X (I do own the original, easiest comparison for me) and noticed the dpad is VERY stiff..... but my originals have between 20-30 years of use on them and feel perfect (I FEEL OLD NOW) Now to wait for my Duos to return from getting recapped to do a proper comparison :)

Ive had my Turbo MINI for 10 months it does a weird thing where it wont turn on until I change the WIRE between the power block and the system. Its bullshit and it worries me and it prob. wouldnt happen if they PROVIDED THE POWER CABLE WITH IT.

I never had a turbo, but have wanted one since i was a kid. So here is my view on it as someone who has wanted to play most of these games as long as he can remember: When mine came, i gotta say i felt a bit disappointed in the build of the console. It doesnt look bad, but those fake lights kinda annoyed me. Cant say anything about the controller, never had a turbo but i always wanted to play the games since i found out about it when i was younger. However, i have no issue with the controller and like it more than i thought i would. I usually hate turbo mode, but it works well here and the switches have a satisfying click and fit in place. Feels kind of badass when you get to a tough part and you slide that switch up and whoop some ass. The menu is really nice, and the music actually is nice as well. Im loving all the games, the shooters are as good as i imagined theyd be and im LOVING dungeon explorer. I also gotta say, the audio is GREAT. I have a sound bar, and this thing uses it much better than the nintendo minis. However, as i said, i never had a turbo. I seem to get a lot of shimmering, but that is probably my tv. Only real problem i ever had was sometimes the menu music keeps playing when i enter the game. I didnt know about pressing select on the games, ill have to look into it and try it. Overall, im having a blast and it was well worth the wait. I have a few days off from work soon where im going to finally tackle ys and dungeon explorer, hopefully all the way through. Couldnt be more excited. Also, worth noting for others like me who havent had the chance to play the turbo or pc engine: give the pc engine games a shot. Some of them are not playable, like warlock and snatcher. But some of them are. Just ignore the japanese text, you will find some sleeper hits. I found myself playing that croquet game for a few hrs before bed. Despite the annoying music.

It was a hassle, but I got my hands on the TG16 mini. Some people complain about the size but I'm more interested in having an accurate representation of the console I played with in the 90s. As far as selection of games goes many of my must owns are on here and the filler is mostly tolerable. There are a few trash games on here though so it's a good thing they stuffed it full of titles to offset. Given the choice I still prefer the SNES or Genesis minis for selection of games but why limit yourself? These mini consoles are cheap enough that it's worthwhile getting them all for a more complete sampling of the 16 era.

Look for the „Mini retro cart” shop an Etsy. The person running it sells mini-replicas of several japanese and us hu cards (in white and black) that fits right into the card slot of the mini. I have a PC engine mini and bought one. He also makes carts for the Genesis mini and the SNES mini (Pal version though).

Does the back panel have a pass thru for the cables so you can leave it on and still use the system? If not it kind of sucks to have to remove it and possible loose it or have to deal with the hassle of keeping track of it. They got the picture on the box wrong, it's missing the picture of that guy looking all excited about the TG-16. It would be cool if the Turbo Tap worked on the Genesis Mini so you could play multi player games on it without having to use only Bluetooth wireless controllers.

Hope you will review the Evercade.

I got the PC Engine version from Japan, mainly because it's smaller. However, the controller for that version does not have turbo buttons. Looking forward to the wireless ones!! I also feel that this is my favorite "mini" because I'm not familiar with the games. It's not Mario and Sonic for the 50th time. I'm playing all these shooters, and I have NO idea what I'm doing, and I LOVE that. It's as if someone released a new (to me) retro console in 2020.

I'm really excited for this thing. I've never even played a pc engine before. I want the core grafx variant. I've been in love with Genesis mini so I'm not a super purist when it comes to emulation plus I'm not a millionaire to afford the original hardware. I'll probably get a mister to get a closer feeling to the og hardware but as far as collection goes I think it's a pretty cool addition.

I'm awaiting mine. Amazon hasn't shipped yet, but the charge hit my card. I'm a bit worried though because I also ordered a second controller, but they haven't charged me for it yet and it is showing out of stock, but the order for the controller is still pending and hasn't been charged yet. Hoping I get one, as I like having two official controllers with these minis.

while not perfect it is awesome. You can even throw in an hdmi to vga converter and use it with 4:3 monitor, provided the monitor supports 720p

I sat down a played Air Zonk all the way through right after getting mine. As a guy who had played TG16 games for over 30 years, I barely even notice the input lag. It's there, but it really is negligible.

@TheGamingCasanova Disagree. I have played all the games and it's not a problem for me, again, as a guy who has played these games for decades. It's not that bad imo.

Finally got mine, just a word about the power block- Amazon tried to sell me the "official" block for $20, don't fall for that crap, you can get one for $6 to $7 bucks on the same site' This was a great video by the way. Thanks!

I own the turbo express along with an sd card adaptor for it with lots of games on it and am fine with it.

Just got mine today! And I agree; while game selection is definitely very good for the most part, they shouldn't have included PC Engine Ys (because it already has TG16 Ys; maybe add Ys IV instead?) and should have put in the Legendary Axe games. Those were the flagship TG16 games back in the day! Konami also has translated Snatcher (Sega CD) and Chi no Rondo (PSP) so they should have used those scripts there. Sure, it would have meant a little more work, but those games (especially Snatcher) deserve the extra care. They didn't even have to use the English voices if there was a contractual issue there; just use the English script as subtitles and for the in-game text. It also suffers from the same lag as M2's MegaDrive/Genesis Mini but it's not a deal breaker. Other than that, I am really happy with my TG16 Mini and I hope Konami brings a few more of these classic games to online shops in a collection or something.

I so love this mini console. I hate to quibble, but since this is a Sega channel..... we get Space Harrier and Fantasy Zone, but not OutRun or Forgotten Worlds? Bummer.

Hi Lord X. Great review, besides of the lame CRT filter, I bought the Japanese PC Engine Version (Sorry I find the TGFX 16 Shell ugly). But this definetly the best Mini System besides the SNES Mini. I have bought all Minis on the market, but after purchasing the Analogue Mega SG, I put the Mega Drive mini to sleep. The only Downfall are the missing translations of Snatcher. Greetings from Germany.

Got mine delivered today. Unfortunately, I have to turn around and return it due to Amazon not shipping it in a shipping box. They just slapped the shipping label right on the retail box and shipped is as is. They didn’t even seal it up. I was shocked that it was shipped like that. Usually, Amazon over-packages everything, but this is the first time I’ve see them ship retail items like this. So the product box was damaged from the shipping, marked with perm marker, and also damaged by rain as it was raining hard when it was delivered. And as I mentioned, it wasn’t sealed, so everything inside could’ve been soaked. I didn’t even bother playing it. I just opened the box to inventory everything, while recording it all on video in case anything was missing or damaged that I didn’t cause. I messaged Amazon if the issue and requested for a return and replacement ASAP. Hopefully, they don’t make the same mistake. As a collector, this is a nightmare scenario. Pay for something and they use the product packaging as the shipping box. It’s ok to do this to comedic products, expendable products, TVs, microwaves, etc, but not on videogame related items.

Never really had much involvement with NEC, but even I was impressed with what this thing has to offer. I believe the delays were worth it for those who wanted this.

Spriggan was always one I wanted, it looks cool as fuck. Plus you get Salamander and Gradius2, Jesus Christ wow.

No FPGA? Well now there is. And it will be coming out next year and I recommend you check out Analogue Duo. And guess freakin’ what? It plays both Hu-cards and CD-Roms (regular, super and arcade), better yet, all formats meaning you don’t have to go after those System Cards! And better yet, no longer do you need to own a SuperGrafx, it plays it all right here. I need to start a PC Engine collection composed of both CDs and Hu-cards. This upcoming system almost looks like a complete replica! Also, it will be cheaper than hunting down a TurboDuo/PC Engine Duo and less needing to repair the disc drive because newer ones are much more reliable. And another note, I can’t help but compare the TurboDuo to the PS3 super slim, I’d like to know is it close in terms of width or size? I’ll do more research.

I looked it up on amazon a couple weeks ago, and the site said that it launches in December 2020... Uhhh, should I check again or something?

On the fence aboutgettinng one. I already have original hardware and software for these. But I can see those who are newly interested in PC engine and tg16 games. As you said,the prices for these games and hardware these days is easily 4 figures, so this makes sense for newcomers.

Its nice to see them put a lot of care into this. I'll never understand everyone's fascination with Legendary Axe though. I just didn't find it that interesting.
