The KNIVES I use for BUSHCRAFT, SURVIVAL, & HUNTING | Knife Sharpening TIPS

A good knife is indispensable in the woods. In this video I'll go over some of the best knives I use for bushcraft, survival, and hunting. Some of these knives - like the Morakniv Companion, Leatherman P4, and Condor Parang - you might have seen in previous videos, but I'll show a few that you may not have seen. I talk about the differences between fixed blade knives and folding pocket knives, as well as multitools like the Leatherman. While there is no "best bushcraft knife" or "best knife for survival" for every situation, some are more versatile than others. Some are good at chopping and others carving or geared more towards hunting and skinning. What you choose will depend on what you need from your knife on a day-to-day basis. My Every Day Carry (EDC) is the Leatherman for its versatility. But, when I'm hunting I always have a couple skinning knives in my hunting pack. Here are a few of my favorites:

I tried the mud and stick sharpening method a while back, and it worked like a charm! I have constantly been worried about how to sharpen in the field if I lose any of my tools, or end up stuck without them, and I feel safe using the mud. For anyone else out there, it's a great technique to add to your arsenal, and make sure there's no big sand grains, I accidentally tried that once.

When I saw that ankle knife my first thought was that there is absolutely no way you would be that tacti-cool. Deep sigh of relief. I also have to agree on the multi-tool or edc. In my handman business it is indispensable, and evev in my classroom during the school year i use it daily.

@@clayhayeshunterfirst id like to say: huge fan of alone. second: any edge that doesnt treetop hairs isnt sharp ;) third: have you tested the benchmade altitude for game? fourth: have you considered not bringing a multitool but instead individual tools? Personally I dont like the steel they use in their blades. You can get jigsaw replacement parts that hold the tshank blades this makes for a killer substitute for that feature. Knipex pliers are also available in miniature versions.

I dont agree. Not because Clay isnt skilled. But id like to see you in the bush with a bronze knife. If Clay had a small calibre rifle on alone he woundnt have missed that duck that swam right up to him either - not that it made any difference in the end, but anyway. Nobody couldve made it out there without a tarp either.

@@FullTimeHypocrite you can absolutly use an bronze knife, theres an reason why the bronze age lasted so long, it's comparable with unheated treated steel, it can cut wood easily, although you'll have to resharpen it alot

P4 and COLD STEEL SR1 Tanto are the best EDC combo For the outdoors. Please give that SR1 a try. Out of dozens! and dozens of knives I have extensively! tested for different characteristics for what a knife should be just in general, the same as you, fixed blades to folders and multitools, hacking battoning, fine carving, animal processing, long-term endurance 20 min to an hour in hand nonstop heavy carving and more niche things like chiseling out a flat section to join the leg to what will be my "bush crafted shave horse" It is the ultimate knife. Good pommel you can push or beat with your hand. just one thing smooth out the inner edges of the handle and the spine of the blade, they come sharp. God bless you Clay! you are the Man, Love all your Videos! Get that Knife!

Hello Clay, I think I have a good idea for a video. When I was a child back in the 1960's, Great grandma in her 70's, 80's then didn't have an ice box or a kerosene fridge. She had a rock and then charcoal ice box built, box covered in large thick sugar bags (hes hen bags) she would buy a block of ice twice a week which would be in hes hen bag on the floor of home made cool box . When we were staying there in summer we would have to wet the sugar bags twice a day and once in winter. This cooler was strategically built under her high house for the shade and wind passing over and through the wet bags. This cooler box was made out of fencing wire like you made your crab pots out of, first lining was approx 6" thick and loaded with rocks , about 3 ft high, 2nd lining was chicken wire loaded with charcoal about 4" thick but a couple inches shorter at the top so the hinged lid could seal. There was raw meat, cooked meat, cold water, milk, butter and cooking fat in this cooler. food would last up to 10-14 days as long as the ice and water bags was maintained. Great Grandma had her first fridge in 1966 and she thought it was a wonder, I can remember the first fridge was kerosene, green and had the named of Charles Hope fridge on it. I also remember in the early 1960's she had a cooler box on legs which was charcoal lined, that also required ice. Were I grew up in Western Queensland, Australia and it is hot, the design of how to build a cooler box if there is no electricity or you are living off grid or industry in country has failed. As half of the USA and the world has a warm to very hot climate. This subject would be of interest to everyone and another tool they would have to survive and make life easier if the need arose. Greg

Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night kzread.infoUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.

I love my Leatherman! I carried a Wave for over ten years, then a Charge ALX for a few years, now i carry a Skeletool everyday. About the only fixed blade i play with these days is an Ontario Blackbird. I've spent an embarrassing amount of money on "bushcraft" knives, only to find out that a $30 Fiskars hatchet does about all the tasks better.

Hey Clay, those are diamond metal plates on that sharpener and are replaceable (but i woukd just buy another, had this one 10 years). The diamond plates have a nail notch and are held in by magnets that I have used for sweeping under a chair for finding a lost screw and you can do the same in the woods sometimes. You can also use them to make a compass needle or maybe get metal out of an eye. There is also space inside the sharpener where there is either instructions or where I put mine just to have them and some paper. There are also broadhead wrenches inside there. I also pop the plates out from time to time and turn them the other direction. You might also want to tell viewers if you are using a carbon or stainless Mora and if its an HD heavy duty (HD) or not. Just thinking if you are selling them, those details of toughness, rustproof and thickness are very important. In other words, a stainless basic Companion and a Carbon HD are two different animals. Stainless in standard thickness is lighter, slicier, and takes little care, stays sharp longer but takes longer to sharpen. The HD in carbon is thicker, tougher, easier to sharpen but will rust quick if put away wet etc. Stainless will scrape a ferro rod just fine (as will many things like flint, glass, broken coffee mug etc. But a good carbon blade can be used as the steel in a flint and steel fire starting using char or tree fungus to catch sparks. Some people get striking the ferro for sparks and getting sparks from carbon steel mixed up. In the old days, a man knew to take care of a knife and wipe it off before putting in the sheath so most serious guys only do carbon since habits are a choice. Then again, if you live where it rains a lot or stay near the water a lot then stainless is a blessing. Im sure you know most of this stuff but once I get typing I figure it will help your readers anyway. All the best to the family as always brother. Mike.

I'm pretty much a city boy... keep meaning to get out in the woods but something always seems to happen to change my plans. (Injury, last minute schedule snafu, etc.) That being said... I also always have a multi-tool on me when I leave the house. Definitely something to be said for a tool-set that fits your most common tasks and saves you an extra trip to find a tool box. Own a original Leatherman Wave that tends to stay in my van because I generally don't need pliers in my day to day 99% of the time. I ended up treating myself to a nice Titanium scaled Victorinox Yeoman covers what I need for a EDC tool-set. While I haven't been able to get into the woods... I do try and practice my fire craft and some wood carving around the fire pit in the back yard. Love Morakniv and Condor... happen to own that Village Parang as well as a Woodlore as well as several Moras. Have many enjoyable hours just processing windfall or scavanged tinder materials from the yard and practicing making fire a variety of ways so I'll at least know my tools. Good on you for making videos like these to inspire others. Thanks!

Yes, For the same reason this is why my dad uses a Leatherman for all his needs too as since 2016 he has owned a Greenhouse, before this he did not really carry or if he did it was a small folding Buck toothpick he found and had to spend an hour getting to a level it would be used again as it was that dull. The style of multitool/Leatherman he likes is the type where you have the stuff on the inside so when closed that closing becomes the way the blade locks so you do not have to worry about the locks failing. This is how my dad ruined his entire blade the connecting rivets over time doing what you did with the knife on the multi tool was he was hammering with the blade. Then also using the smaller unsharp knife like tool to pry and use a hammer on in the process of prying.

Clay, Bear in mind that Leatherman may decide to replace your tool if sent in for Warranty repair. So if it has sentimental value ( as I believe it should) you should contact them before return to sort it out. And any tips on other affordable production knives would be appreciated as I can't afford any $300 custom knives that I might not even like. As a service technician I carried a Leatherman in my 5th pocket for 25 years and it was a rare day that I didn't use it at least once. Even when carrying a tool bag. Thanks Bud. Love your videos. Good stuff !

Mora has a whole bunch of fantastic designs for cheap. You’d be hard pressed to find a Mora for $100, and they’re great knives. Most of them come in both stainless steel and carbon steel. The Garberg is their main premium knife, goes for around $80 and there’s really nothing close to that price that outclasses it. That’s just my opinion of course, but if you need a good knife for a low price, the Garberg objectively fits in that category.

Excellent review! For me it's my Bushman by ColdSteel. At just $25 it's been my go to for camping and outdoors for over 20 years. Baton firewood, strip bark, cooking, campsite prep, and tons of other stuff. Holds an edge very well. Not great for fine carving, but you can get most of what you need done with it. For everything else I also use a P4. Fantastic tool. On the Bushman I needed to file down to the metal on the first four inches of the spine to make it good for use with a ferrocerium rod. Good for skinning large or small game, though like Clay said on a knife like this you need to be careful of how you use it so as not to poke holes in the hide. For me it's natural to use that way. For others it might not be the best option for skinning.

Being that I carry a purse, my multi-tool is a bit larger and contains a small hammer and ax head. While it's slightly bulkier than a traditional multi-tool I absolutely love it!!! I use the screwdrivers, hammer, and the small saws all the time. For being an off brand the saws and other functions work incredibly well. I think finding a go-to multi-tool that you're comfortable with is a must for everyone.

I carry Leatherman Supertool . . . no one-handed operation . . . . but it has been one of the best all-around, used-the-most, EDC tools I've ever owned. I bought a dozen Mora Companions about 7 years ago. I keep them everywhere - tacklebox, all my trucks, all my ATV's, all my UTV's, BOB Bag, work bench, . . . there is a Mora Companion within 50' of me 24/7/365. I have a ESEE 4 on my belt just about everywhere I go except for church. It's nothing fancy, but it is my 1st choice for any tasks not suited to my Supertool. I know not everyone is blessed with a lifestyle that allows one to carry a fixed blade daily . . . . I am grateful that I do. I have a BIG knife too but it was custom made by a Guild member up in Idaho. And I have an almost-Bowie-size Mountain Lion from PKS that I save for camping. I keep an Ontario Machete strapped on my molle rifle scabbard that goes on whatever machine I am using on any given day ( 4 wheeler or SBS ) and another Mora Companion strapped to the Machete scabbard. I am happy to see the similarities between our basics, Clay. I'm thinking right it seems.

Love my mora. My edc is a mora light-my-fire in a neon green plastic sheath. Never lit a fire with it but its been on my hip for about 7 years. Had the mora robust but lost it on a hike. Been back to look for it twice. Once with a metal detector. I might go looking one more time and film it. I've got a good hunch on were it fell out. My only complaint with moras , sheaths. Got me a garberg also. You can beat the crap out of them too. Even at a $100+ they're a good value. Great review. I'm bingin Clay vids tonight.

I am biased, as I only have a few knives and while my leatherman (Surge) is the EDC, if heading bush I also like one of the large knives that I made out of large files (properly heat treated of course), and with a Micarta handle. Other cheap folders are just that cheap, so they are not relied on or regularly used, but are stashed in several bug out or get home bags.

With regards to the parang, 1075 is great axe steel with the techniques you were using and the edge profile its not surprising that you didn't have to sharpen it. I got into knife making a year ago now and have made a few hatchets from 1075. Just be careful how you sharpen it otherwise for more aggressive striking you will quickly lose your useable edge due to rolling. which is something I learned the hard way while camping

Worksharp Field Sharpener is the bomb. Also I hope knifemakers listen to you about the belly on a skinner. So many "hunting" knives have very little belly and they go dull because the belly does the work when processing game. I jist finally made my own and the radius covers the whole edge.

I've used a Nessmuk style knife for years for skinning. The things I see some people skinning with just makes me facepalm myself (no belly, way too big, etc). Although I'm having one hand forged, my current favorite is the ESEE Ashley Game Knife in S35VN. Perfect shape with a lengthy, comfortable handle for bigger hands. Probably the most comfortable handle on any knife I have.

Bought this Leatherman tool last year after I watched your loadout video. My only real gripe is it's quite heavy but I carry it anyway as well as a cold steel folder. I mostly use the blade, pliers, and the scissors a good deal. I'm also loving the GSI 10" KETTLE or what others call dutch oven. I just made shepherd pie in it yesterday

Hey Clay, love the video! Just wanted to let you know that Mora makes a model called the Garberg, which has a steeper belly towards the tip that the standard mora does not. I own one in stainless and i would highly recommend it as an outdoor knive, keeps its edge very well, is excellent for batoning, but without the bulk of something like the parang. Keep the videos coming!

I love my garberg. I have a 511 as well and it’s fantastic for carving. The edge runs all the way back to the handle, so you can choke up on it and do details stuff with lots of control. But the garberg will do almost anything you want out of a knife in the woods. It’s also the only full tang mora that I know of.
