Loved your grandma's paper chain - it reminded me of my grandmother who went blind and for years decided that she couldn't knit any more as she couldn't see. One day my mother casted on some stitches for her and got her to make a garter stitch square. I was so proud that in her nineties she made a garter stitch blanket for my first baby made out of all the squares she knitted.

I learned to crochet at a very young age from my great grandmother who was in the same head and heart place as your grandma. She taught me to make simple coasters and hotpads. Some were round, some square, some off kilter. She used Christmas color yarn, spring colors, scrappy, etc. I still treasure a few of hers to this day and I'm over 70.

Thanks to you I’m starting my Penny gloves today and hope to make Christmas gifts from the pattern as well. You’re so inspiring!! I’m a 75 year old life long knitter and your enthusiasm keeps me going! Can i say, as a grandmother, Penny is THE most precious child i have ever seen! You’re so blessed! Happy Holidays!❤️❤️

How lovely that you've made so many handknits for teachers! And, what a great idea for a tag with laundry instructions and a length of yarn for repairs! Good for you making a manageable plan for Christmas. Hopefully, you had a very hygge Christmas (even though I'm watching this way past when this episode dropped). I like to work on Christmas projects every 25th of the month! It really helps me spread the Christmas spirit and joy throughout the year :)

Hearing about your grandma and seeing the paper chain she made has me in tears 🥹 this may be a bit big of a project for her but maybe a Sophie scarf or shawl? Seems repetitive and easy enough but may be too big of a project for now!! I’m glad you are able to share this hobby with her!

For your grandma I would really recommend a patchwork jacket or jumper. I made one following the dimensions of the JW Anderson 'Harry Styles' cardigan as my first project. Basically you need lots of 14x14cm squares (worked as panels), plus some shaped squares for the neck and shoulders. Then you work up the collar, cuffs and ribbing, seam it together and voila, you've got a lovely big jacket. As long as you get the square size right you can use any yarn, gauge and stitch pattern you like, so it's as simple or complex as you like. That specific pattern is rather oversized, but there are tonnes of patchwork jumper/cardigan patterns out there, and you could make a pattern very easily. It's a very long project overall, but I found that because it's made up of small sections and you can use different colours/stitches, so you get a really regular sense of accomplishment in making it

This will be the first Christmas that I have spent with my family in 4 years (I lived 3,500 miles away and never wanted to brave an airport during the holidays). My holiday celebrations on my own were very relaxing and low-key. My family always goes above and beyond for celebrations so I'm trying to make it a point to be present in the moment and also not get overwhelmed with the pressures of the holidays. It will be so lovely to spend that time with my family again, but I have to be careful that I don't get caught up in the "shoulds" of the season. Also- this isn't my first holiday season with my partner, but it's the first one we are celebrating together as a married couple 😍 As far as gifts go, I'm very picky with who gets knitted things from me, but this year I have a few pairs of socks and a gnome to gift. I am also making my mom her first sweater! I'm very behind on my knitting plans so hopefully I get them done in time 😂 My "go-to" gift knits are usually dishcloths and some nice soaps or bath bombs for a little self-care box. They're quick, easy, I don't have to worry about size or wool sensitivity, and very practical.

Hi Laura: it’s funny you are making ornaments for a tree outside. I live in a suburb of Chicago, IL. USA and our zoo, Brookfield Zoo puts up Christmas trees for people to decorate. My family has been doing it for 10 years. Acrylic yarn is very good for outdoor ornaments. I crocheted a chain garland the first year and it is still in perfect shape. We decorate our tree with red and gray, which is for heart and brain tumors in memory of the people we lost.

About the strips knitted by your grandmother - here in Norway our local cancer support group gifts a blanket to anyone they know who is diagnosed with cancer. They can be single colour with different shades or 2 contrast colours. Either way if anyone wants to knit such a blanket to donate they get a very simple pattern 12sts, 4mm needles, 15cm strips. If you are good with colours they are beautiful. Several friends have one and explained cancer ill people often feel chilly, eve in summer.

My favorite Simple pattern is the Boreas headband that’s free on Ravelry. It’s very easy, and adaptable (see your gauge conversation earlier haha). If I was going to teach someone to knit, this would be the pattern I would use. You can also adapt it to be flat knitting instead of in the round if you think that would be easier for your grandma, and it’s very quick if you use heavier yarn. I hope she continues to enjoy reconnecting with yarn 🧶

simple little scarves, possibly even made of small squares of different colours that could be joined, or just change out the yarns, adding new ones as she goes along, might be doable for her. also, 4 squares joined in a ring , big enough to fit a head, can make a headband style hat, or add one more on the to to make a hat!🥰 and larger makes a cowl scarf.

Your grandmother can make many different items using garter stitch and rectangles. She could make scarves. The scarves can be fancified using different types of yarns but I would definitely stick with lighter colors and thicker yarns as it gets hard to see darker colors when knitting as you age (I know from experience). For a twist, she can make a Moebius scarf by just giving a half twist and sewing the ends of the scarf together. Or, she could knit a shorter scarf and connect both ends and voilà you have a cowl. All this from the simple garter stitch rectangle knit at different widths and lengths. P.S. Let her know that I thought her knit stitches looked beautiful - all uniform in size and tidy. 😀

It was wonderful to hear about your grandmother rediscovering her love of knitting!! Perhaps she would enjoy the Triangulum Blanket by Ellie Jones? It’s knit from little triangles so you could join them as a blanket or something smaller. Or maybe the beekeepers quilt by tiny owl knits. It’s the same idea but they’re little stuffed hexagons. I think they’re both fingering weight but could easily be knit at a larger gauge. Or something felted could be fun? There’s so many patterns for basic bags or baskets. The Felted Flower Bowl by Meg Myers is cute! I hope she enjoys whatever she decides to knit next!

Hi Laura, looking festive today in your red lippy and frilly top! Love the Penny Gloves. Think I might cast on some of those too! Whilst the stitch pattern on your hubby’s cardigan is very nice, and technically simple, I find that those kinds of patterns are dangerously easy to go off, and often not noticed till well past the error. I would be inclined to stick with an ordinary broken rib, or one that I like very much is two rows of K2P2 and two rows plain. Gives a lovely waffle texture and lovely rest rows in between. x. PS - don’t offset the ribbing part.

I love knitting and I love people who love knitting and I feel like we're just all so full of love and hearing how excited she was to make that make me tear up 😅. For gift knitting, I'm not doing anything big. I'm making a friend of mine some fingerless mitts, and I think I might knit up a couple bookmarks for another friend, but that's about it. For pattern suggestions for your grandma, what about washcloths? The Kitchen Sink Shop does a Year of Dishcloths and they're all so lovely and I've made a few and enjoy them. And most of them are just a combo of knits and purls.

Laura I am SO excited for this episode! Penny’s Aosta is adorable. Your Sophie Shawl is beautiful, I can just imagine the squish. I desperately want to make that shawl and I think I have the perfect mustardy yarn in my stash too. All your Penny Gloves are beautiful, I think you’ve convinced me to make a pair! Those Frost Flowers mitten are beautiful, I’ve never tried colourwork but those mittens make me really excited to! It may be a bit complicated but the first thing that came to mind for your grandma is the Seedling Scarf by Knitatude. Or perhaps the Cadence Color-Blocked Cowl by All About Ami? That one’s just garter! I’m crocheting a cardigan for my mom in this beautiful deep teal, and I’d like to do some sort of alternative vlogmas. I’m looking forward to finally having a break, spending time with my family, and getting to start some new knits. Sending big love ❤️

But the Mini Crazy Eights Dishcloths by Julie Tarsha on Raverly may be something that your grandmother may like (they aren't square but are garter. I have not made these yet, but am planning on making some for coasters.) then depending on the yarn choice they could be washcloths or as its shown as coasters.

I just finished the pattern Fresh Rain from Drops Garnstudio in KnitPicks Stroll Tweed Merino yarn and Valley Yarns Southampton Mohair/Silk yarn. It is my first ever completed project with mohair, it is soooo soft and squishy I just love it so much! I am definitely going to make some more for gifting sense it's quick and gorgeous, I am also going to make more of the Jason's Cashmere Hat by Sweet Fiber.

I recently finished the "Great Love" version of the cardigan for my husband and made it extra big. The stitch pattern is indeed a bit of a slug and there were a few times when I did the wrong offset and had to rip back half a row after noticing.... But! the cardigan is a cool construction and I think I'll knit myself one someday :) well written pattern and the help thread (link on pattern page) on ravelry is awesome!

Perhaps Grandma could make stacks of the rectangles and at the end of the year (2023) you could seam them to make a blanket. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am soooooo excited for your vlogmas!!! 😍 also- for the shawl cardigan you could use that pattern but omit the stitch pattern and just do stockinette? That way you don’t have a search for another pattern!

Swapping rob for stockinette would definitely affect the gauge, I’ve swatches the yarn in stockinette and I’d need to go up a size which would then affect the rib collar. Swapping the offset rib for a broken seed stitch might be better as it’s a similar texture but you get a row of knit every other row! X

A wonderful chatty episode, thanks! This season I’m looking forward to a few festive events with family and friends. My husband is in a choir, a friend is in a handbell choir and they both have concerts coming up. I’m happy to hear that your grandmother has rekindled her interest in knitting. I wonder if the Sophie Scarf would interest her?

Hi!!! What am I looking forward to about Christmas? VLOGMAS…… yaaaay, I can’t wait for yours, honestly your kids just make me happy 🥰. I’m looking forward to slowing down a bit and relaxing, I’m looking forward to cheesy Christmas films. Out of the 5 people that live in my house 4 are autistic so we have a super stress free Christmas and just take the day as it comes. Gift knits …… meh. If I can be bothered I want to cast on the sophie shawl and might do a couple of pairs of mitts. Xx

I understand your emotion behind your grandmother's knitting. It's special. My grandma recently started passing down some of her sewing and knitting supplies to me because after a lifetime of creating she's collected such an amazing collection and she can't keep up anymore. I felt just as emotional when I received her supplies. As for patterns for your grandma, would the Sophie Shawl work well for her? I know it's more simple but would the increases/decreases work well with her arthritis?

Great podcast Laura and a lovely chilled way to spend my Friday evening ❤. Think the stitch pattern on your husbands jacket will not be mindless enough for you during a busy December doing Vlogmas and all that that entails?? Maybe find something that you actually like the stitch pattern of would be my advice! I'm really looking forward to opening my knitting advents and watching your vlogmas and can't believe it starts next week! Good luck with it all xx ❤️

Lovely podcast Laura! I’m definitely looking forward to your vlogmas episodes ❤ Have you ever looked at the Jiji Cardi by Knitatude? It’s a shawl collar cardigan made with Aran weight that has the same construction as Big Love and it’s a unisex pattern (though most projects are done by women). I love her patterns, and I’m planning to make both Doyle and I a set of Jiji Cardis ❤❤ I absolutely ADORE your idea for a knitted dress (you know I made the Augustins 21 dress and have my own opinions about it lol). If the design ever makes it to the release stage, sign me up to test it! 😍

Hi Laura! My mom is like your grandma - a prolific knitter who can’t knit anymore. I keep thinking about casting on a bulky hat for her, or getting a Musselberg started. Let us know what she ends up doing!

Hi lovely Laura ! I’ve just watched your latest podcast and I’m sat watching a lovely yarn podcast and she has done a ravelry link to 50 scrappy/ advent minis and this one jumped out at me for a recommendation for your grandma :Jelly Roll Blanket by Kay F Jones. It looks like strips of garter then joined together, I thought maybe grandma can knit the strips like she has for the paper chain and you and family could stitch them together.

I'm cheating this year, sort of. Last year I made my 3 sisters in law hats, gloves, and cowls, but forgot to take them with us, so they're getting them this year instead! I;m making my OH a hoodie in chunky yarn (cos I didn;t finish his DK one in time last year), and making mum in law a lap blanket for when she's snuggled up watching TV. If I have time I'll make something for my mam too. I hope you're cold isn't too awful. Sending lots of love xx
