    If someone wrote a song like this today it’d never make it on the radio and that is a damn shame. Thank God there was some good music made before people started taking themselves too seriously.

    ...The only reason it "wouldn't make it on the radio" [if such a thing, still, EXISTED!] is 'cause: It's too GOOD! 👍👍 ...I mean: I don't recall ANYONE bringing-up, even, the POTENTIAL of a relationship that Feiger had with a girl, AT THE TIME, AT ALL (MAYBE in California where "gossip is stock-in-trade,"🙄 but: it was NEVER mentioned, AT ALL, elsewhere! ...until (at MINIMUM!) decades later!!!)!!!! ...Nowadays there are voluminous amounts of [so-called!] "artists" **cough-cough** who wrote lyrics about "if you don't prefer anal, g.t.f.o." and other such shit. "Lurid" doesn't even BEGIN to cover it! Openly "rapey" **ahem--ahem!!!!** "culture" and assertions/attitudes are EXPECTED and celebrated!! ...so: your idea that "this song would never make it on the radio" (if such a thing, even, EXISTED, anymore!) is, likely, from an older, more appropriate sensibility and an unfamiliarity with the openly, lewd, stupid, pointless shit that passes as "lyrical content" in the current day & age! ...or from someone who did not grow-up knowing anything better/less intolerably stupid and aggressive🤦) which (despicably and, actually, sadly!) masquerades as/under the fallacy of: 'expressive freedom' 🤦🙄, nowadays...🙄🙄) No, seriously!!

    When this came out in '79 it was at the time when New Wave songs were first beginning to make it onto the mainstream rock stations. This was a track that both the classic rockers and the New Wavers liked. And yes, the guitar solo is killer. By the way, the single version left out a large section of the guitar solo.

    Their next hit was "Good Girls Don't" which reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is also a "dirty minded" song. "And she makes you want to scream; wishing you could get inside her pants" (this line was re-recorded as "wishing she was givin' you a chance" on the "clean" single release): And it's a teenage sadness Everyone has got to taste. An in-between age madness That you know you can't erase Til she's sitting on your face (and it hurts!). The "clean" single edit also changed this last line to "when she puts you in your place."

    Bruce Gary [the band's drummer], RARELY gets his deserved accolades! (perhaps among other musicians 🤷) ...but he is a monster player, in fact. As much as Fieger & Averre were "the song-writing team" (for the most part); the core reason for the band's tightness, rapid-fire energy & overall quality, were (the rock rhythm section of): Drummer, Bruce Gary and Bassist, Prescott Niles. Bruce DID have the advantage of being the only member born & bred in N.Y.C. 😋🤘🤘 ...but y'know.... 🤷🤪 -The entire Get The Knack album is, top-to-bottom, worthwhile! "Lucinda" is one of my most favorite "unknown" (to MOST people) cuts! 🤘🤘 ...Get The Knack and Round Trip are necessary albums in the collection of anyone who: really likes music from this period; any pop-radio-leaning, melodic rock fan, any new wave fan and any fan of the brief fart of a "movement" which often is, now, "historicalized" as "California Power-Pop" or "the Power-Pop movement of the late '70s & early '80s" (in the U.S., that ONLY existed in Cali.!). Anyhow: underappreciated, excellent albums! 🤘🤘

    I've been hearing My Sharona for 45 years and never really paid attention to the lyrics because the music was so fire. I just sloughed it off as a song about young love but one line in particular is highly questionable morally and possibly legally. Great melody and energy though and the guitar work throughout - lead, rhythm and bass - is outstanding especially the solo. Perhaps the best example of a massive hit song with a great melody but misunderstood lyrics is Every Breath You Take by The Police. It's not a love song but a stalker/controlling song. Not only that but I maintain Sting more than borrowed words and theme, intentionally or not, for Every You Breath You Take from Led Zeppelin's D'Yer Mak'er from 10 years earlier.

  • @Agg1E91
    @Agg1E91Ай бұрын

    This is a textbook example of an unexpected different song contained within a song. The entire song of verse and chorus is consistent and integrated throughout. Straightforward. Direct, uncomplicated sections and production. Then, out of the blue, a monster guitar solo that the listener does not see coming blows your head off and then, flip the switch and we're back to the rest of the song. It's like they had My Sharona pretty much ready to record but it lacked that certain...something. On the side, the guitarist had this crazy solo thing he'd been working on, but it didn't really fit what the band was doing. So the band said, "Eff it! Just stick it in there, as is, near the end of the song. We'll do a short transition in and out, and we're done!" Honestly, I wish they had written a song that sounded a lot more like the solo. The rest of the song is just a little too...basic for my tastes. A number of songs have surprise moments where an entirely different song breaks out for a few bars, but this one takes the cake.

    Um, yea, I thought you were talking about a beer until you said Toyota and on the road. Bob, I'm quite sure you're friends were singing about beer and you were confused. I don't think ANYONE registered a Corona at DMV. (of course there's the anatomy meaning of Corona as well! - STILL never one registered at DMV!) Corona works better than Corolla, both because Corona rhymes, and nobody brags about their Corolla! 😆

    No different than Winger's hit song, She's only Seventeen. Great tune, but a creepy.

    " I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind " ?!? Slightly raunchy lyrics. Good beat, though.

    Close enough to be misheard as ‘other kind’, which gives them Plausible Deniability. I mean I was 13 when this song came out. So a few of the risqué lyrics & innuendos were lost on us… Didn’t take long to figure it out though. One thing that seems to go frequently unnoticed, and I’m writing mid video, I didn’t watch the whole thing yet, so I don’t know if the fellas are listening to the radio version or the album version but the guitar solo near the end of this song is straight up fucking FILTHY!

    Check out this same group and their song "Good Girls Don't". I always wondered if it is the sequel or a different girl. Much more explicit lyrics. They really were not a one hit wonder.

    @lisalisa13 Homeward Strut is a great follow up. It's an instrumental so would show only one side of his talent.. Of course love ❤️ Homeward Strut. Thinking Post Toasty has both vocals, amazing arrangements, and playing. It's the best introduction to show what he's all about.

    The Knack is NOT a one-hit wonder. Check out Good Girls Don't, which was a very big hit. At least it was in Canada.

    I actually thought that this song was about a kind of car [a Sharona definitely sounds like a vehicle!]. ...Yes, later, I got the album and read or understood the lyrics and ...changed my mind 😛 ...but still. (C'mon!! People in California, EASILY, love their cars more than their significant others! - or: at least as MUCH! 😛!)
