The Kinks were an English rock band formed in London in 1963 by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. They are regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s. The Kinks' music drew from a wide range of influences, including American R&B and rock and roll initially and later adopting British music hall, folk, and country. The band gained a reputation for reflecting English culture and lifestyle, fuelled by Ray Davies' wittily observational writing style. The Kinks and the songs of Ray Davies are now rightfully established as a great British institution. From the opening riff of You Really Got Me, The Kinks’ influence as pioneers in heavy metal, power pop, conceptual albums, and theatrical shows can be detected in much modern music.

One of the best albums ever made. Ray is a genius and deserves to be spoken of in the same breath as Daltry/Townshend, Lennon/McCartney, and Jagger/Richards.

Daltrey/Townshend isn’t really a thing, The Who’s songwriting is 95 % Townshend, 4% Entwistle, 1 % Daltrey

Such a brilliant songwriter, truly one of the world's finest. The great Ray Davies .
Ray always injects a bit of humor somehow
Here is a story about a sinner, He used to be a winner who enjoyed a life of prominence and position, But the pressures at the office and his socialite engagements, And his selfish wife's fanatical ambition, It turned him to the booze, And he got mixed up with a floosie And she led him to a life of indecision. The floosie made him spend his dole She left him lying on Skid Row A drunken lag in some Salvation Army Mission. It's such a shame. Oh demon alcohol, Sad memories I cannot recall, Who thought I would say, Damn it all and blow it all, Oh demon alcohol, Memories I cannot recall, Who thought I would fall a slave to demon alcohol. Barley wine pink gin, He'll drink anything, Port, Pernod or tequila, Rum, scotch, vodka on the rocks, As long as all his troubles disappeared. But he messed up his life and he beat up his wife, And the floosie's gone and found another sucker She's gonna turn him on to drink She's gonna lead him to the brink And when his money's gone, She'll leave him in the gutter, It's such a shame. Oh demon alcohol, Sad memories I cannot recall, Who thought I would fall, A slave to demon alcohol.

Interesting. I just listened to the Band's "Life is a Carnival. " What do these "rock" songs have in common? Why, they both make use of the all important, essential rock instrument the tuba.
