The Kings Ran This Play 17 Times In 1 Half | Kings Film Room

We had a really fun sequence happen on Friday night in Minnesota where the Kings played the Wolves. Awesome game and win for Sacramento, but what stood out to me was how the Kings spammed the same play over and over throughout the 2nd half, to which I counted a total of 17 times. The best part was we actually got insight from Mike Brown on how this play came about.
Welcome to Kings Film Room, where we analyze Sacramento Kings basketball through a different perspective, focusing on the X's and O's of the game and studying the tape. I appreciate you guys for supporting the channel, and leave any feedback or suggestions down below. Thank you!

    No one can stop Fox. There is zero solution for him, and I hope people see that this playoff and he carries the Kings farther than people think possible

    I think wolves just got exposed. The free throw discrepancy in this game was fucking ridiculous. They’ve been getting this favored all season long for free throws. They give ANYTHING to Anthony Edward.

    A stretch big with a roll big and a dynamic ball handler you say? So I should expect the Wolves to practice this play after getting destroyed by it.

    Fair critique, but at the same time, if it isn't broke, don't fix it. Hence why they kept running that same play.

    Hard disagree. You must be a new fan. Brown and Malone aside, pretty much every coach for almost two decades have been terrible. Luke Waltons run was some of the most brain dead depressing ball I've ever seen with 0 adjustments. See the puke game. This play in particular is unguardable because the bigs in Minnesota run drop coverage. If you got a guard like fox, its a double high screen and bu-bye. Dont need to adjust what isn't broken. This play broke the game open

    @@ProlIy I've been a fan since 1994. Our best coach in that time was Rick Adelman. Malone was obviously good, but I'd throw Joerger in there too and I actually preferred him over Malone. As mentioned I love Mike Brown, he's instituted a pretty insane offense, he's a great motivator and culture guy, is raising our defensive game. But I just don't think in-game adjustments are his strength. He got outmaneuvered by Kerr in the playoffs last year. Also he doesn't draw up particularly creative out-of-bounds plays in the same way Joerger did. So yeah, I would stand by my statement that MB's weakness is tactics.

    Nice. I was wondering what mike brown was talking about, I didn't recognize the play design in real time. I think we need an iso 3 or 4 still in the high post who can create on his own when fox isn't on the floor. Idk if trading the depth of the team is good though and HB is Mr. availability played all 89 last year.

    It was so obvious in real time. Kings stopped running DHO scheme in the second half of this game and all you saw was this high post PnR double screen. If kings are running this scheme, expect fox assists to be high for the game. They run it against lengthy front court defenders.

    How can a defense respond against this? Should Fox's main defender just step back towards his own hoop, effectively negating the screens? (essentially "go under" the screen?)

  • @lylaeloise3948

    @lylaeloise3948

    Yes I think Wolves should have hedged, recovered and then contested. Wolves really missed Jaden McDaniels - he is an elite screen navigator and would have been able to contest much better. Only Edwards could navigate the screen and was quick enough to contest Fox (4:33).

    Another way to respond to this would be switching. You have a guard thats guarding fox whose fighting off either screens (left or right depending on where Fox goes). Its critical to have the screeners' defender to be versatile defensively ( can guard both guards and bigs like a draymond type) to keep up with the speed. In this situation it can be considered unguardable because of Fox's lightning speed - which can be a nightmare for versatile defenders.
