KoF 13 was the definitive sprite fighter imo, no game has even come close to topping it yet. I hope SNK hires 2D artists again, but I doubt that's ever happening.

It is really goddamn pretty. Even though they're not necessarily sprites, Them's Fighting Herds and Skullgirls are really pretty 2D fighters. And Guilty Gear Xrd, but GGXrd is fucking cheating.

They went through a lot of questionable art styles, but I'm glad they finally found one that worked. Guilty Gear Xrd is hella pretty, tho. And it's really unique; nothing else like it.

@@dangerousshoes that is true, but I prefer XX's art style and mechanics. One thing I can say for sure is that it's the most flashy and visually appealing fighter on the market. And as for KoF, 12 and 13's art direction were fantastic. I remember thinking that 13 was the gold standard back when in first came out, and I still somewhat think that to this day.

No matter which KOF it is, I'm always impressed by how huge the rosters are. And this is a formerly annual series.

Annual series which means the game itself is actually huge than any other fighting games like Tekken or Street Fighters because have so many series and basically an arcade games and classics, but they really need an upgrades for future game if necessary, in my opinion

Honestly feel that XIII had the best character select screen. The boxes were big enough to where it was very visible and clear what character was in each box (without looking at the character art on the side) and they added an idle sprite animation for each character as well as character art

2000’s character selection has the Best 2d art work that Mary is godness.

2001 select screen used to be my favourite back in the day. The white background with big enough and horizontally spread out icons of the characters looked good. Also when you hover over a character the big character art looks amazing. This mixed with the addicting cursor movement sound that they added in back in 2000 was everything for me lol (it gets annoying when you spam it by moving the cursor non-stop bit if you don't then I think it sounds amazing.). This might be the reason why XIII's select screen looks so damn good too. They put a black background instead of a white one and added idle character sprites while keeping the big enough spread out icons and the big beautiful character arts.

King of Big Noses

Whoa! Character select screen in fighting games were always one of my favorite part of any fighting game, and The K.O.F series always had one of the best character select ever. There are more King of Fighters games than I could imagine (especially in Japan where it is king.) King of Fighters 2000 (2D) and Maximum Impact Regulation A (3D) had the best character select screens ever. This video is amazing! I love it!!

Same artist. Start from 2000, 01, 02, 03, then XIII (pre-battle quotes, cutscenes + ending) The roster was designed by same artist.

In this order XI, XIII and 2002 UM definitely have the best looking ones and music also. Didn't get to play neowave but the select screen looked nice to.

Did you also know that Ryu has been in every Street Fighter game?

The Japan only game Quiz KOF features Haohmaru, Ryo Sakazaki, Terry Bogard, Mai Shiranui, Robert Garcia, and Nakoruru. Takuma Sakazaki is an unlockable character in that game. Yuri Sakazaki is a damsel in distress in this game. KOF XIV is Nakoruru's first canon appearance.

Holy crap there's so many King of Fighters games.

Fatal fury and the King of fighters evolution of select screen (1991-2019)

I love the fact Rock Howard is in KOF XIV. He’s my favourite SNK Character of all time. Go for it rock!!! However, my biggest gripe with KOF XIV is the lack of “hidden” characters. Why couldn’t Antonov and Verse be not visible or unlockable after you beat the game?

KOF 2001 is pretty strong. Also I believe that at least one of these is in the wrong order. Regulation A comes after 2006. But still very good video.

I like them all, but my favorite is 99, the very rhythmic loop music and the faces of the characters when you pass the course, I love that anime artistic style

I think 99, Neowave, 2002 UM and XIII are my favourites, XI would've been my number 1 if it didn't have off-screen selections and u could see them all

For me it's MI A. But the BGM gave me the Pump It Up feels 😂

You forgot the DC versions of '98 and '99; also, 2001 features a massive design overhaul in the PS2 version that I feel worth mentioning.

I can't remember but I once played a LOT game at an arcade machine and it's like every ultimate move was instantly available it was fun

@@jaderabbit898 I know your post is old but i have to agree, 2K0 was really ambitious with it's striker system. i wasnt cheap(yet people found way's to make it cheap) It was like SNK's response to MVC2. Huge variation of Strker's with easter egg's and fan service, Very underrated among the KOF community.

That 98' screen is actually from Slugfest, not Ultimate Match, which actually improved that select theme and had all of the Orochi Saga bosses.

Honestly I loved all of them so I can't choose which is the best character select screen. I liked 98, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, neon blood, XI, and XIII

I have so much mixed feelings about the 2001 art

The one at 11:47 is the only 2D KOF roster done right! Because of the console-exclusive fighters and hidden bosses, it's what all KOF games needed. These fighters have no forced-teams and forced-plots while still being playable by fan-service, it even gives the SNK devs more creative freedom.
