This is better than the original release. I usually hate 3D backgrounds with 2D sprites but this Dreamcast version of 99 has lovingly crafted sprites with the 3D effect. Even the character sprites have been given a overhaul making them brighter instead of the grungy originals.

the raining academy stage, holy shit, even the characters being affected by the rain is featured, you can see SNK put a LOT of love in this version.

the voices are sooooo clear.... thats the good thing about the dreamcast verions.. they used studio vocals not the neo geo voices..

The best Kof and best version ever made for me, i recently picked up a Japanese copy because i had this game back in the day and as a Snk lover since the early days i missed this very version a lot. Cant wait to play another hundreds of hours on my DC.

I agree, it is without any doubt my favorite classic KOF! No idea why most players prefer KOF98...

iPlaySEGA The bad thing about playing the japanese version is that forces the game to 50hz on Pal consoles, i didnt remember that and i was surprised..its a big handicap. :(

@@iPlaySEGA Same, I picked this up as my last US DC title (I waited for the eventual GC port of Sonic Adventure 2) in mid 2001. I still love everything about the game and the well-done polygon/sprite backgrounds. I was disappointed when I received KoF'98 as a gift on Steam and found it to be inferior all-around. That being said, I still really love KoF: XIV.

If SNK want to make a new KOF it should be like this, old school but a touch of modern graphics... Not the route they are taking, alienating a lot of players of the past, like me...

+siegfried9999 +lightsouthaha True! Dream Match is based on KOF 98 and Evolution on KOF 99. I own both but prefer Evolution because of the Soundtrack.

+siegfried9999 You're talking sprite-based animation for fifty characters. In this day and age there is not enough payoff for that much labor. Sign of the times but that's how things are. Even SNK, with their improved resources as a result of their acquisition, can't justify hiring sprite artists when compared to the cost of doing the game in 3D as they are.

At lot of people didn't seem to like '99, and I can understand when compared to '98, but I've always enjoyed it. From the music, to the overall design. I just wish they'd bring Whip back for XIV.

Wow, Syo sounds exactly like Kusanagi... ... I guess they do have the same voice actor.

What RGB cable did you use? I would like to be able to record the system that way instead of composite since I can't record the console using VGA because elgato won't accept the signal.

Just a standard RGB cable and this game also has no VGA support, that's the reason why i captured it via RGB instead. BTW, just get an upscaler and even the Elgato will accept the signals of 'low resolutions'. ;-)

@@iPlaySEGA I know, I'm really upset this game along with Q*Bert, Ms. Pacman don't work under vga. I was looking for an upscaler too but good ones are always sold out and others are just garbage.

Who didn't crash laughing when you left the game paused for more than 5 minutes and the screen went dark and your character appeared running as if possessed until he crashed into an invisible wall? The first time I saw it I found it very funny.

Ooh, very nice that you have the music set to the arranged version 👍 I just love seeing sprites over low poly 3D backgrounds, it's been something that I been obsessed with lately for some reason lol. Also, are you playing this through a CRT TV ?

if the KOF Dream Match 1999 was that good, on Flycast the game is just wierd, but KOF Evolution is damn nice :D
