    i think on the surface it seems like a simple movie plot, however if you look more into it, its quite complex. the king clearly hates himself (as seen when the king smashes his mirror) so when he was drawn as the perfect version of himself (aside from the artist drawing him cross-eyed, which he later fixed), it haunts him. in fact, it ends up being the death that the king inflicted upon other characters, i.e the artist and guards. also the character of the statue on the horse is in my opinion, overlooked. the character’s tag line is “mark my words”. the ironic thing is, every time he said that line, whatever he states before wouldn’t come true, meaning there is no point to mark his words. not sure what that represents or maybe i’m looking far too into this, but this movie has marveled me since i was a child. i also very much enjoyed the cage the little bird kept flying into. it was a constant trap that caught him throughout the movie and when robot (seemingly uncontrolled) smashed it, it almost gave me goosebumps. the robot cannot control himself and yet, it doesn’t show the mockingbird piloting it. this could represent the people underground who before didn’t even have access to the sun. they couldn’t do anything without the kings say, but now that he’s gone, they can break free from the cage. no longer was the too tall apartment tower there. speaking of the apartment tower, the castle ruins at the end are much much smaller than what you would expect them to be, (considering all the advanced and huge buildings that were considered his castle). this could be the animators not wanting to animate that many ruins or it could represent the emptiness and true size of his reign. before on the outside, the king’s kingdom looked huge and magnificent. now it doesn’t even make a decent pile of leftover materials. it was at the end of the day, a house of cards.

    For those audiophiles out there, notice the changes in the audio quality as you listen to the clips from the movie. The 1952 audio would have been recorded through analog mediums. Then, when he had the chance to work more on the movie in 1977, the audio quality seems more crisp, which, actually, coincides with when Dolby was working on newer sound recording and reproduction techniques. Not that that’s bad. Just a byproduct of what happens when it takes nearly 3 decades to finish a film.

    No, it's just that in the 50's they still used an optical soundtrack recorded on the film itself, the completed version was recorded on magnetic tape and that's what we hear in the dvd and blu-ray restorations, and by 1980 most cinemas supported multi-channel magnetic track audio, either integrated in the print or on separate Hi-Def magnetic film reels.

    You forgot to explain the core of the movie, which is the artístic movement that this film is in. The surrealism was in its clímax in the 40s. The director, a surrealist animator, made this film as a way to make an artististic masterpiece and also as a critique to autoritarian regimens, especially nazi Germany. Bonus fact, the king's desing is based on Adolf Hitler and, amazingly enough, young Richard Nixon. On the ladder, the director got his picture when he went yo he U.S. más saw a campain on a local election where Nixon was a candidate

    I had to verify a fact with my parents, and they certified it: this movie is actually the very first one that I ever saw in theaters back in early 2000 (I was only 6 years old), and I already recall the memories: me and my class walking towards the town theater to see the movie, the teacher trying to calm us down before the projection (I was still somewhat of a reclusive kid back then), the movie unfolds, the class lets an "'aww" at the end, we walk out of the theater back to the school and have a little hour of discussing what we thought of the movie (I don't remember at all what I did say back then, but I certainly spoke frankly for the first time of my life). Whenever I hear the first piano notes of this movie, my heart melts no matter what. P.S: for those who wonder why I mentioned myself as "reclusive", this will be somewhat explained in the upcoming WITB.

    I found this movie last year by accident, i think i stumbled upon it while searching up "old animations" or something. After watching the trailer i instantly ordered the dvd. The opening theme is beyond beauty, and not Just the music, the surreal animation and plot, backgrounds etc makes my copy of the movie, one of the most priced posessions that i own.

    first movie i remember seeing at the theater was disney's hercules (french version) as a 3 1/2 year old in 1997. I was about 6 (like you) when I saw parts of Roi et l'Oiseau at a friend's home... or was it the entire movie? I'm not sure... Then saw it again as an older teenager. It's a very memorable movie with a unique style and atmosphere, even as a 6 or 7 year old it seemed kinda special.

    If you haven't (or it's been a while), watch Miyazaki's first feature length film, The Castle of Cagliostro. The influence of The Curious Adventure of Mr. Wonderbird (the 1952 version of The King and the Mockingbird) is undeniable, from the castle's design with the secret appartment to the tyrannical ruler forcing a young maiden into marriage. P-S: By the way, congratulations on your french pronunciation, it was really on point.

    Le roi et l’oiseau. One I can definitely call a classic. I still have my old VHS. There is also a pretty important part about the king that AniMat left out. Have you noticed that he is crosseyed in some shots, but notin others? That’s actually a plot point. Most copies you can find are PAL copies, but I still maintain that it’s worth watching. And the movie contains very little dialogue (like AniMat said, most of the story is shown visually, through the animation. It’s pretty easy to follow, even if you don’t understand the dialogue.) so don’t worry about a language barrier.

    What does the crossed eyes mean in the story?

  • @POLE7645

    @POLE7645

    5 жыл бұрын

    In the beginning of the movie, the king hired a new painter and commissioned a new portrait (of him as a brave hunter). The king is cross-eyed and it, of course, an horrible shot (but no one will tell him in his face). The painter paints the portrait with the cross eyes and the king promptly fires him via a trapdoor (and possibly kills him). Later on, the king goes to his suite and paints proper eyes himself on it. When night arrives, both paintings of the shepherdess and the chimney sweep come to life (and that's where they come from), but so does the king's portrait. Eventually, the king wakes up and meets his double, who disposes of him (via trap door). The portrait then takes his place and becomes the actual antagonist (and he's much more competent than the real thing). So, every time in this review that you see the king without cross-eyed, it's actually the king's portrait (the real one is gone, presumably dead). I know that's a lot of information, but I don't consider it spoilers since all of it takes place during the first 15 minutes of the movie.

Since this animated French film influence and inspired great filmmakers like Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata and their animation studio Studio Ghibli, I would love to make my animated films as good inspired and influence by this movie. And bring back this unique smooth beautiful animation. I truly love animation and I want to become a great animation filmmaker one day! ❤💝 ❤💝

    I can definitely see where this had an influence on the Ghibli animators. The way the characters quickly run down the stairs looks a lot like a similar scene in Spirited Away, and the robot character in this probably directly influenced the robot from Castle in the Sky. If I remember correctly, Ghibli also distributed the first Japanese DVD release of Le Roi et L'Oiseau.

    I don't know if anybody remembers but this film when it wasn't complete was syndicated in the late 50s and early 60s. It was syndicated as a show called Captain Sailor Bird. I don't rememberhow many chapters but it was in chapter play, he would always introduce the next chapter. Many cartoon hosts showed this cartoon as well as other cartoon movies from France. One of the things about this movie was that it was far ahead of its time. I do believe that the Japanese were influenced by this movie. It was the first time they did a giant robot. I found out about it being rereleased in a book where it discussed the completion of the film. He was trying to get the original animators to complete it. Maybe tat it why it didn't match up to the original animation. I first saw the complete version in 83.

    It's like closer to Soviet Russian fairy-tale animation, cutting it pretty close to that genre. The quality is between Japanese Miyazaki or Takahata style and Russian Ivanov-Vano style animation.

    But with even more better effort than I guess the state-funded Soyuzmultfilm budget would often allow, I know, I have the experience and the national background, in viewership I mean, not actually making the colored stuff. You know I'm and never been a cartoonist or animator, maybe I wish I was even part-time, but it's probably too late, or maybe not since all animation is learned on the computer.

    I feel like you came into this movie with the wrong kind of idea of what it is. The plot is not weak, the characters are like that on purpose, the bland characters are done as a SUBVERSION of fables, in fact the entire fact that the King does NOT marry the shepherdess and the King is not the noble person really shows it is an utterly surreal subversion of fables.
