Although I like the police officer he must realize HE IS STILL MARRIED she is a good girl that would not consider breaking up a marriage. He also can not use her as an excuse to get out of his horrible marriage, he must do that on his own without involving her in any way. If he has feelings for this young mother he must respect her as a woman and not put her in harms way. And once the divorce is done go slow so that it isn't appearing that she is the cause as that will not be fair to her she doesn't deserve the hassle. Now as for her P.O.S. ex husband she needs to tell him to go and never come back. It's that simple get a restraining order if possible.
