Remember people if you see something suspicious no harm comes from just simply reporting it. Never be afraid to do such a thing. The title reminds me of a child murder that occurred in my town back in 2003. Here's an excerpt from the newspaper: "When police found her body Thursday evening -- crammed into a picnic cooler, wrapped and sealed in three garbage bags and stuffed in a trash can -- it weighed 11.5 pounds. That's barely one-third the weight of a normally developed child, said county Coroner Robert Bowers, who described Kristen's physical development as closer to a child less than half her age. "This child was literally neglected to death," Armstrong County District Attorney Scott Andreassi said. "There isn't any question, this is one of the most heinous cases ever seen in this county." The child's parents -- Janet Crawford, 35, and James Tatar, 41, of Parks -- were arrested and charged with homicide." It's quite the story. Sad. Incredibly disturbing. ... So I say it's a prime candidate for an upload. If interested...there are dozens of articles about it. KZread won't let me post a link but it should be easy enough to find based off the names of the parents..er.. I mean, monsters.

Odds are the defense lawyers flat out told the defendant he should agree to plead guilty so they can try to negotiate a lighter sentence eg. take the death penalty off the table. That said, the defendant can choose to go to trial against his lawyer's advice and the lawyer has to try to defend their client. In this case the evidence for murder was so irrefutable that the defense chose to try to dispute some of the aggravating factors like kidnapping and sexual assault to try to lessen the potential sentence that way. It's not an enviable job, but somebody has to do it so the conviction doesn't get overturned on appeal.

Gosh, I used to drive on that 73 Freeway and I’d see that giant banner on the side of an apartment building facing the freeway, saying “Have you seen her?” And a photo of her. I used to look at her face and memorized her name hoping one day I might see her or someone would find her alive, although I knew it would be a small chance given how long she’d been missing. Then one day while watching news, her body was found in that rental truck. My heart sank. Left me feeling so sad for her family, friends and community. Afterwards, as I traveled that same freeway her banner was now gone and I’d say a prayer that she didn’t suffer for too long.💔

@@pandora-is-here So I grew up in Lake Forest, by Holy Jim Canyon and Trabuco Canyon, at the foot of Saddleback Mountain. The legends there are of Black Star canyon being filled with Satanists and apparently it was owned by a rancher who went insane. There is apparently a cult that lives there and the church that is up the road from Black Star is where they congregated. Tons of old wealth being crazy and murdering each other. Homeless people who have disappeared to live out in the woods there. Of course you have a bunch of murders and disappearances. Again, Satanists who have killed people and doing occultist stuff out in the woods. Now this isn't far fetched to me because I'm Pagan and I've done spells and stuff out there myself. I think I remember hearing about maybe some sort of chupacabra creature roaming around, but that was years ago. Just the list goes on, especially with rumors of Satanism and murder. These are just some if the things I grew up with and, again, they are just legends. So many people who commit murder and violent acts display warning signs in their youth, that is why mental health intervention is so important at a young age, it not may not only save their own life but others as well. Sadly, many teachers are not given the resources or tools to help.

It doesn't matter if people tell someone of these signs. Police and government always say, " we can't do something if nothing's been done" that's how people who are stalked and murdered. "No crime has been committed" until she's murdered. They say threatening to kill someone is a crime but the police say, "they could have just been venting, I can't do anything unless they act". So how would we ever stop murder before it happens? They say blaming the person before it happens only tells them what they are earlier and makes them feel they have no other choice 🙄😑. I guess it's like telling someone they're a werewolf before they turn. How would you feel? I don't know how I'd react if I was told I show signs of being a future killer. I would like to think I'd except help from the people telling me so I don't become a killer. But would a real killer feel that way or trapped and restricted? Crazy world. Can't stop kills because we can't predict them, and if we could we can't stop it because it's accusing before anything actually happened so no crime was committed.
@anxsie
Жыл бұрын
@@binxwaxcap7832 It can be helpful that teachers are aware of the signs, to be able to refer THE PARENTS of children to a psychiatrist, a lot of parent's aren't educated appropriately to know themselves, within the education system having informed teachers can bring intervention. I personally don't agree at all, that no amount of intervention can stop someone from becoming a murderer or serial killer, unless they truly are biologically a psychopath, but there's also a debate about nature vs nurture and there's plenty of psychiatric research to support the nurture aspects influence for that too. Would this guy have turned out this way if he didn't grow up in this environment and someone had intervened? Potentially, but I'd rather educated teachers or at least some school staff who can pick up on signs and bring it to the parents attention so they can be evaluated by a psychiatrist so they are aware of these behaviours/traits and can address them. School is a major part of the majority of kids development in a lot more ways than just educating them and could be more capable of having more positive influences on a child's upbringing, if the appropriate training and resources are provided to address these sooner. But the attitude to leave it to the family and social services to recognise and handle alone hasn't exactly been reliable.
This case hits close to home, as I was born and raised in Newport Beach and went to the same school as Denise. Her murderer is sick...
I'm not trying to be mean, but I think it's a tad old fashioned to judge a woman's lost potential by whether or not she got to become a wife, mother or grandmother. She could have been any of that, or none of it and so much more. It's tough to quantify a lost life of potential. It's just so, so sad.
I’m not sure if his mum was still alive when he was sentenced or when the information about his upbringing came out, but in cases like this where the parents actions have clearly messed up their kids, I feel the parents themselves should face legal action - possibly manslaughter/second degree murder. His mum definitely played a big part in this case. RIP Denise.

I mean that’s how most serial killers became serial killers. Richard Ramirez was influenced by his older brother into a life of drugs and street life. Poverty made forced his hand into a path of hatred and hopelessness. Dahmer was influenced by his fathers hatred towards sex workers and the way his mother dressed. And this one lady, who had gained trust issues became a killer, as everyone she trusted had betrayed her and used her for personal gain. Honestly, the human race needs to do better. Abusing children and teenagers is awful and someone who isn’t even fully grown shouldn’t have to fight for survival.

I don't totally agree with this, because one's choices define who they are, not necessarily their upbringing. I unfortunately heard a lot of parallels between John's upbringing and my own. However, I was able to make the choice to pull myself out of a dark path. He wasn't.

@@nerfworthy218 a person's upbringing has an absolutely ginormous impact on who they become as an adult. Abuse literally causes brain damage, which is essentially what mental illness is. Just because you were able to be okay enough to not become a serial killer doesn't mean that others were able to do the same. It depends on how damaged their brains become from the abuse. In this case his mom is a very very large factor for his actions. As soon as you said Newport beach I started paying attention more. I'm from Huntington Beach, about twenty minutes above Newport. You should really cover more stories from the 90's! I've seen another person say that as well and I agree they didn't get a ton of coverage.
At least I have Coffeehouse Crime to look forward to on days like today. Thank you so much for everything you do!
Cheers for another interesting, well researched, and compassionate video Adrian. Thanks for the minimal ads as well. Not only did the parents mourn when she was disappeared, when she was found, and when the trial took place, but if John ever does get executed (California has the death penalty, but all executions are on hold), they will have to mourn her again, whether or not they attend the execution.

Such a cruel world! 😔 No votes in mental health. The "system" always let's us down whilst they're busy counting money at our expense. We always pay the price in more ways than one.
Denise was born about 9 years after my parents and my family has been in the Orange County area for decades. My parents actually remember when this happened, they had just gotten married at the time and all the guys in their friend group got super protective of all the ladies, a lot of the partying in the area quieted down for a long time because young women were afraid someone was on the prowl...
My favorite times of the week are when you upload!! Thank you for your hard work and dedication. My weeks wouldn't be the same without coffee house crime and coffee!!
The killers mother... Solidifies my thought that some kind of psychological test ought to be given to anyone looking to have children or adopting them. Far too often we hear of abusive situations; some that do not rise to the level of criminal, but nonetheless damage the children. How this would be implemented I do not know.
@missmcphee8859

And who would deem the acceptable standard? We have parents battling in court because their children want to go on hormone therapy or to undergo double mastectomies and when the parents objects this is considered abuse or opressive and not in line with current 'open minded' thinking. I don't want some sick government dictating these things to me.
When I first moved to Newport Beach, Denise's billboard loomed right before my exit. It never ceased to send a chill down my spine much like every other female in Orange County.
