I never assumed that the truck killed the bus driver and the kids; quit the opposite, I always felt that the trucker was giving the bus a push start just to show Mr. Man that he didn’t hate the whole world … just him!

That's how I've always took it as well. David wasn't able to help the bus with his own car (which is a representation of him) but then the truck comes and does it to emotionally attack David and show him that he can do what David himself couldn't. It was never about harming the kids or bus driver, it's all about toying with David and pushing him closer to the brink. I just rewatched this movie again and I'm binging KZread videos lol. I love this movie so much it's so good. It's also what I love about Lovecraft, they don't come out and say the specific reasoning or show the bad guy himself. They leave that all up to your own brain to bounce around ideas and that's what makes this stuff so good.

Well, actually, if you think about it this way, he’s making men think that he’s going crazy because he assumed that the truck driver will kill anyone in his path but while he’s trying to warn everyone about this truck driver he’s playing the game of “I have no idea what he’s talking about. I saw a bus full of kids. They were probably itching to get home so I gave him a little push to help him get started.” Because you see the promised serial killers is they have developed a skill where they show that they’re not a threat and when you least expect it, that’s when they strike

This was an extra scene to make it into a cinema release, along with the level crossing scene (I'm British) & when he phones home at the first garage he stops at. Was originally a TV movie but got such big viewing ratings that Spielberg opted to do these so that the extended length would qualify it for cinemas, hence why the cinema version tends to say "made in 1972".

AND I lived near the Terminator gas station when T2 was filmed, lol... When I was kid I was so excited to see a car carrier loaded with General Lee's heading up Placerita Cyn to be launched. A-Team vans, army jeeps but never saw a KIT car.. So much cool stuff filmed there in the good old days. Devil's Rejects was filmed on Soladad by the tunnel in Duel in the Tootie FN Fruity scene. My buddy has the US/Mexico border sign from Blue Streak with Martin Lawrence. They used the CA Aqueduct in Littlerock CA on 87th street as the border crossing. The opening scene in Tango & Cash where Sly blows up the truck with a pistol was filmed a mile from my house. And many many more...

This film is deeper than people realize. David Mann is a guy who runs away from fear. Tries to avoid it at all costs. Since he believes he cannot win in defending himself from it. The truck is like a bully that keeps pushing him around. Letting him know who's the man. Here the kids make fun of Mann since they know he is not man enough to push the bus. He is as weak as his 6-cylinder Plymouth. As for the truck from Mann's eyes he's a bully but from the bus's eyes he's a hero. This scene says the truck loves supporting the innocent while preying on the weak. Plenty of people like that in politics and law enforcement, etc. Duel trucker for president!

That's interesting. I wondered if he was any relation to Lefty Frizzell or his younger brother David Frizzell, two country music legends. But I couldn't find any connection. It's an unusual name though, so there's probably some family connection somewhere. And also, although I watched Bonanza some in my youth, I never heard of any Dusty Rhodes, except for the famous professional wrestler. Maybe that's where the wrestler Dusty Rhodes, who according to Wikipedia was really named Virgil Riley Runnels Jr, got his name.
