Columbus, September 24,1977 -
2nd ranked Oklahoma took a 17-0 lead at halftime that grew to 20-0 early in the 3rd qtr. over Woody Hayes' 3rd ranked Buckeyes. Then, Ohio State reeled off 28 unanswered points after Thomas Lott and Billy Simms left the game with injuries. When OSU stopped OU's 2-point conversion with 1:29 left in the game, the Sooners appeared defeated. But, Sooner Magic came to life as OU recovered Uwe von Schamann's onside kick. QB Dean Blevins then hit Steve Rhodes at the OSU 24-yard line with 3 seconds left. von Schamann took the field. OSU then took a timeout in an attempt to freeze him. As the crowd of 90,00 began to chant "Block that kick!", von Schamann began to lead them in the cheer much like an orchestra conductor. Then he calmly lined up and booted the 41-yard game-winner right down the middle.

I especially like Woody at the last second of the video. A coach or trainer from Oklahoma extends his hand as if to say good game, and Woody smacks the guys arm. Great sportsmanship. Woody Hayes was not a great football coach, he was a bitter old man who didn't understand what it meant to teach sportsmanship. I agree that for most college athletes and coaches that winning should be everything, but there comes a time when you should congratulate the team that beat you. He never got it.

That was great! I had just moved to Columbus that year and I was the only OU fan in a room full of Buckeye fans. They just knew he couldn't make that field goal and I kept telling them he had already won games under pressure so it didn't bother him .. as he led the Buckeye fans in "block that kick"... haha! They play again in 2010.
I was in 9th Grade in Oklahoma and my father took our family to this game. You cannot believe how windy it was that day - and we won this game with back-up QB, but just barely. Uwe was awesome that day.
I was ten years old, in 21 C, about in tears after that kick! LOL What a game that one was.
From NE Ohio I remember how that kick broke my heart. I think Woody was asked after the game "wasn't that exciting?" Woody in his own way answered: "Exciting? I'd rather be boring as hell and win the game!" I had deep respect for Oklahoma after that game. The wishbone was a magnificent offense to watch. I rooted for OU anytime after that (except the '83 game against the Buckeyes). Go Bucks! Boomer Sooner! And as always, Muck you Fishigan!
Funny line. I'm a Buckeye fan but think Brutus is goofiest mascot in the land, but we love him.
I was at that game @ 9 years old. "Uwe Von Schamann" was a profanity, for years to follow, in our neighborhood pickup games. What a fabulous memory. Thanks for posting. PS: lay off Woody.

I still remember his 52 yrd kick at Farrington Field in 1975 when he was at FW Eastern Hills. That thing seemed to go a mile.

Oh yeah I looked it up... 2016 and 2017. By that point the Sooner Schooner will be propelled by jetpacks and Brutus Buckeye will be a genetically modified mutant nut instead of a guy in a costume.
